To add an avatar to your screen name simply hover your mouse over your screen name in the top right corner. A pop up box will open allowing you to upload a picture from your PC. For mobile devices, tap the profile icon in the top right. Tap "avatar" in the list and upload a pic from your device.
You can also edit your signature that way as well. A signature is text or photos that you add that will be included at the bottom of all of your posts. Mine lists my position with HN, my email and twitter follow buttons.
