HERDNATION.COM PFF: Offense and Defense versus ODU

In a less than stellar defensive effort against Old Dominion, linebacker J’Coryan Anderson received the top PFF grade among Marshall’s defenders with an 81.0. Anderson recorded three tackles in the victory.

Defensive Line:
Deeve Harris (seven tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss) led Marshall’s defensive line with receiving a grade of 79.7. TyQaze Leggs (four tackles, one tackle for loss) was the only other defensive lineman to grade above 70 with a 72.0. Dylan Davis and Mike Green round out the top four performers up front with grades of 69.4 and 69.2. Other grades of note: Raquan Thompson: 69.1; Juke Okolo: 68.5; Jabari Ishmael: 64.4; Chris Thomas, Jr.: 63.4; JJ Hawkins: 62.5.

Linebackers:
As noted in the intro, J’Coryan Anderson led the Thundering Herd linebackers grading 81.0. With a team leading 13 tackles, Jaden Yates received a grade of 62.5, while Landyn Watson totaled nine tackles and graded 56.1.

Secondary:
As he has done several times throughout the 2024 season, J.J. Roberts led Marshall’s secondary with a PFF grade of 73.8. Roberts had eight tackles and one pass deflection in the win over the Monarchs. Daytione Smith recorded one tackle and graded 71.7, while Josh Moten had five tackles and an interception on his way to grading 70.6. Ian Foster notched six tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass deflection, and 118 kickoff return yards, earning a grade of 69.4. Other grades of note: Jadarius Green-McKnight: 62.7; Jacobie Henderson: 62.2; Ahmere Foster: 61.5; AG McGhee: 59.4.

In what was a back-and-forth affair against the Monarchs on Saturday night, Braylon Braxton, willed The Herd to a 42-35 victory. With his performance, Braxton earned the top PFF grade among Marshall’s offense with a 91.4 and was also honored as the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Quarterback:
Braylon Braxton put on a dominant performance that the Marshall faithful have been craving for years. Although his completion percentage was not gaudy, going 13 of 24 for 210 yards and three touchdowns, nearly a handful of those incompletes were due to drops by wide receivers. Braxton also carried the ball 18 times for 140 yards, picking up several critical first downs with his legs down the stretch.

Running Backs:
Ethan Payne received the highest mark among Marshall’s running backs with a grade of 72.4. Payne totaled four carries for 12 yards and one touchdown while adding one reception for seven yards. A.J. Turner, who had 10 carries for 53 yards, followed Payne and graded 68.5, despite seeming to disappear in the second half of the contest. Jordan Houston rounds out the running back room with a grade of 59.1 (9 carries, 56 yards, 1 touchdown).

Wide Receivers:
With five different receivers catching passes in the win, it was DeMarcus Harris, who received the top PFF grade at 78.1, despite not recording a stat. Christian Fitzpatrick recorded the next highest grade with a 70.4, while tallying two receptions for 69 yards and one score. Chuck Montgomery and Bralon Brown round of the top four receivers with PFF grades of 68.1 and 62.3. Other grades of note: Carl Chester: 60.3; Tychaun Chapman: 58.3.

Tight Ends:
Although he did not record a reception, Justin Holmes netted the top grade among tight ends at 80.2. Cade Conley followed Homles grading 60.0, with Toby Payne grading 57.1 while tallying one catch for five yards.

Offensive Line:
Despite only playing 11 snaps, Logan Osburn received the highest offensive line grade with a 61.3 (75.8 pass block, 59.7 run block). Jalen Slappy was next in line with a grade of 60.6 (87.0 pass block, 56.0 run block), while Jeremy Jones graded 58.2 (59.9 pass block, 56.6 run block). Shun’Markus Adams, Eric Meeks, and Elijah Ellis complete the offensive line with grades of 49.2 (18.5 pass block – no, that’s not a typo –, 52.8 run block), 48.0 (38.4 pass block, 54.5 run block), and 47.2 (33.1 pass block, 56.2 run block).

Leftist fatigue. herdman pay attention.

Here's the reality, tard. The Jack Smith case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning it has NOT been dropped, it is temporarily dismissed and charges can be refiled at a later time. It does not mean he is not guilty and does not clear him of suspicion.

Hey dumbass: I just love that you got all giddy about Trump going to prison and not being elected. Remember me telling you to stay giddy? I won't say I told you so. 😂

Without prejudice, is just saving Jack Ass some face. It's over, but go ahead and stay giddy. 🤣

"It's extremely unlikely that any prosecutor would attempt to bring the same charges in the future, in part because the statute of limitations for the alleged crimes will have expired by the time Trump leaves office in four years."

"Bad coaching and lack of adjustments on defense almost cost us the game...almost because I moronically forgot MU won since they did well in other areas. If it wasn't for Braxton and that meddling offense, in would have been right."
The tone of your post infers that I'm upset we won. I'm not. Hell, I even said in this very thread that the defense did just enough to win. It also suggests I'm anti-Huff. This is also incorrect. See my post on the other thread re: offering him an extension.

That being said, why do you think questioning poor coaching means you (1) want Marshall to lose, and/or (2) are a "bad" fan? There's nothing wrong with pointing out shortcomings with the team. Is it your position the defense was good? Because that's certainly a take. A terrible one, but a take nonetheless. This is a message board. Banter, arguing, and criticism are the entire point of it existing. If you are offended by that, maybe you should fvck off. Just a thought.

How many rush yards did Braxton have? 140 yards. So, it works both ways.

Thing is, some on here are not confident the MU coaching staff can make the adjustments in defense for JMU, based on the past lack of adjustments...most notably, GA Southern because they actually beat MU.
I don't get too worked up over a win with mistakes because we simply cannot know if MU will make adjustments until the game, and thus, regular season is over.
When the season is said and done, this can be re-examined.
Let's face it, plenty based their predictions of MU's record based on the previous season, and pretty much everyone's been proven wrong on record.

Looks like Huff may prove them wrong again, and if he does, I don't think some could handle it.

Get a crew cut and put on my Red Ball Jets

I was browsing in the media section of a local store when I noticed they had a rather large selection of vinyl records. Not the old ones from decades ago, buy brand new editions. They also had record players for sale. The small little box with a simple arm and turntable like I had as a kid. At the same store, the CD selection was limited. Looked like they were phasing them out. Everything does seems to go around in a circle.

fyi Charles Huff..

Reporting over on Sunbelt Conference Talk that officials with Southern Miss flew up yesterday to interview Huff……

Certainly great news. But hard to believe. USM is at best a lateral step, if not a step down. USM plays in the giant shadow of the SEC, we only have to worry about USPAM (which is having inept coach issues of its own) and the laughable "Big" 12.

Is CS actually showing leadership and initiative? He has not shown any up until now, but letting CH know that he is O U T at the end of the Randy's Wrecker Service and Sport Bar Bowl, presented by Jim Bob's Transmissions, before Christmas is leadership.

Or is the common, and I think wrong, opinion on here that somehow running the university, which is the most important job in the state after governor, is really this side job and really BS is secretly AD, and it is he man really pulling the strings? BS is a business guy and the CUSTOMERS' rejection this mediocre product is something that a business guy would get behind fixing.

Either way, CH free in 25, and the rebuilding can begin.

What an ignorant take.

You think because it happened to work out in our favor in that particular game, we shouldn't point out and discuss the staffs' inability to recognize and counter what an opposing team was doing? Particularly when this same issue - that is, the inability to make in-game adjustments to another team's scheme - has been a recurring theme for Huff and his staff. A theme that cost us at least one game this season, multiple games in the past, and could have cost us this weekend had it not been for the heroics of Braxton' and the offense.

I don't think you understand how a message board works. You need to get off Semore's nutsack. That was an absolute disaster class on how not to play the read option and further evidence that this staff struggles with in-game adjustments.

Also, if you want to talk about ridiculous arguments, aren't you the one that claimed the defense was worn down, even though they were getting destroyed the entire second half?

"Bad coaching and lack of adjustments on defense almost cost us the game...almost because I moronically forgot MU won since they did well in other areas. If it wasn't for Braxton and that meddling offense, in would have been right."

I said the offense was scoring really fast, which is fine, but a long, sustained scoring drive would have given the defense time to rest, eaten clock, and put more pressure on their offense to score.
It didn't work out that way, and I, unlike you, won't complain about it since MU won and that's what matters in the end.
They absolutely matter especially if they aren't corrected by next week

...and? We all know how some will react if MU doesn't make adjustments.

What'll be interesting is how some will spin it if MU does make adjustments.
