Two things:

Bennett would refuse to guard a refrigerator.

We played with a ton of effort, false effort, in the first half. Over playing, gambling on passes, left shooters everywhere. Not solid at all.

In defense of MU...oxymoronic today, I know...

Toledo was absolutely smothering on defense. Forcing turnovers, constantly going for the ball, and never stopping, made it a nightmare for MU.

Also their shooting from the field was insane the first half.

I’m going to be very consistent. I criticize Doc for things like this in football and Danny deserves the same criticism in basketball. You don’t get blown out in the Henderson Center. No excuses. I actually hate the fact of how many games we get blown out on the road in Danny’s tenure but getting smoked like this by Toledo at home sucks.

I don't like how MU seems to be down 15-20 pts routinely in many games Dan's coached in. Either that, or MU gets a big lead and allows the other team to come back and win.

I know its very early, but MU really needs to improve much more than many thought.

Bennett a good kid, big heart, but is wrong for Dan’s Style. Doesn’t help when he has to continually come out after 2-3 trips up and down the court full speed. Just my take.

Dan's teams have traditionally improved over the course of the year. Toledo went 25-8 last year and got an NIT berth, so it's not like losing to Morehead State (which we have done several times, even in years that turned out fairly decent). Should we lose to them by 25? Hopefully not. But it's certainly not time to jump off a cliff just yet.

Difference in defense, including intensity, may have something to do with overall QUICKNESS and FOOT SPEED, or in MU's case, lack thereof! One thing I noticed in the first game is that our Big guys on the whole are SLOW! Watched running up the floor that Sarenac was almost "plodding" in his strides. Not saying that he and some of the other bigs were not giving effort, they just lack overall quickness or speed in getting to the ball, getting to a spot to be effect defensively, to get a board, etc.

I blame this in part on Danny's idea/philosophy on recruiting. IMO, too much emphasis on foreign player who are, to be kind in some cases, "projects", who need 2 or 3 years to learn, and get up to speed in, the collegiate game in CUSA. I think he needs to bring in an occasional JUCO or so who has some real game experience beyond HS and is a little order and perhaps a little more mature to fill some gaps and be a glue or steady hand in certain years when we are very young and/or inexperienced overall. And don't give me all that bullcrap about it taking 2-3 years to learn Danny's "system"! Should NOT take that long to learn how to play effective man to man defense, for instance!!

In goherds defense the tv broadcast announcers said a 25 point loss was the worst of the D’Antoni era. Plus wasn’t the Southern Miss loss on the road? Maybe they were talking about the worst home loss.

They were.

It was previously WKU winning by 25.
Toledo topped that today according to the commentators.

Something I picked up in the box score from the Robert Morris game that was concerning seems to be a lot of turnovers. I think one thing that helps this team is having Taylor. No seniors starting so this is a two year climb back to the NCAA

Can’t respond to every comment. I wasn’t saying we have bad players or a bad team. I was saying that today, we came out super aggressive defensively and it hurt us by taking gambles we don’t need to take and leaving shooters to pull open 3s. We aren’t quick enough rotating once someone leaves their feet or runs themselves out of the play. Bennett refuses too defend well right now it seems.

Long season, Toledo is good. BUT, we aren’t 25 points worse than they are. I would say we are actually right there if we could buckle down and play solidly, attacking the rim more often.

Should have taken the IUPUI kid that smoked us in the CIT. We could use his shooting. He ended up at WKU and will kill us again.

btw, Bennett is going to need to find a way to stay on the court

I understand that Taylor is being highly touted but iirc he hasn't played a minute of college ball. I hope he is the real deal but why is everybody so high on him?

When the opponent shoots 56% on 25 shots from downtown and you only shoot 26% on roughly the same number of shots, that spells defeat.

Yes, on the road in front of 3,000 fans against a team with the same exact record in the middle of conference play. That’s correct.

I don’t get this either. He’s a freshmen who has yet to play a minute of college ball.
I hope he is the real deal but thats a lot of hype for a kid who hasn’t seen the floor yet.
Sorta like all the raves about IB.

I've said this for three years, Dan needs to recruit some men. Whenever, his teams have to put on their big boy pants, they get blown out. WVU in the tournament, Maryland, Virginia and Texas A&M last year and now Toledo. Men vs. boys. But I forgot, they look great in practice.

I think ball handling is a problem right now and I hope Taylor helps

Was it last year, or the year before, when WKU came into the CAM and blew us away, scoring over a hundred, and think the final margin was over 20. A year before that, I believe, or the last time UTEP was in town and had a couple of twin tower starters, they beat us handily, also by 20 points or more, and also went over the 100 point mark.

People note Doc often not having a clue and with a deer in the headlights look at periods during our football games. Similarly, however, during some of these blowout losses in basketball, D'Antoni often sits stoically as a casual observer when the opponent gets hot and goes on a run, leaving us down by double digits and making it extremely difficult to come all the way back. Overly reluctant to take or use a much needed time out as if to do so indicates some serious flaw in his system, coaching, etc. Coach says this team is "young" and not very experienced. Isn't that exactly the type of team that needs a time out, and some coaching, calming down, etc., when things are not going well on the floor and the opponent looks like it is about to take strong control of the game?

Maybe he should adopt the Herrion philosophy. Rant and rave. Scream and shout. And get bulldozed on the sideline by an opponent
