21 football schedule

For the 11th straight season, we don’t play UTEP.

That’s a long time for teams that have been in the same league the entire time.
The only thing I can guess is it's due to travel time and cost. Maybe the league is trying to help member schools lower those type costs. If so, I am good with that.

Good lord... remember when our non conference schedule was somewhere in the realm of decent to good? We could go 12-0 next year and not be in the top 15. I don't expect that obviously, but the lameness of our OOC schedule makes me want to vomit. Maybe it's time to play some money games with no return expected. SMH

I would be good with UTEP joining the Mountain West or the new WAC. El Paso is closer to Los Angeles than it is to the Louisiana-Texas line, is on Mountain Time, and it is 550 miles from the next nearest CUSA school.

At first I thought you were being sarcastic with your explanation but I am starting to think you really are just that stupid....

"historic game" WTF does that mean? We continue to think anyone outside of Cabell County cares about the plane crash 5 decades ago so I can see why you think "historical" has some of of significance. Get real

I-AA doesn't help. I know a lot do it, but we have nothing to justify the rest of it, so it sucks.

Quasi Rival with the AAC... again NO ONE ELSE CARES ABOUT YOUR HATRED OF THE AAC. It does nothing to help our schedule overall.

Team with a growing national reputation... Sheezus H Criminy you give no credence to anything any other program (including our basketball team) does, but you will justify anything we do in football. You criticize everyone for being deranged fans, yet you'll make the dumbest excuses on the planet for the football program. Wake up

UTEP would love to be in the MWC. They are in the same boat with them as we are with the AAC

Absolutely 100% w/Sam on this! Great non con sked!! ECU - I don’t care how good/bad they are - special. special rivalry. App - are you kidding? Maybe our best old rivalry, and one that should be played often. Navy - speaks for itself. NCCentral - every school should be scheduling one of this kind of game every season, and the P5’s usually do at least 2. This is a great early season test for Huff/Herd....

btw - who is this CushNancy boy? Seems to be pretty unedumicated when it comes to foose-ball....

It's an awful schedule if Marshall is truly aiming for what we all want as fans: getting the one coveted bowl slot we have a chance in hell at getting.

It's an awful schedule if Marshall wants to be taken seriously as a legit top 25 team by getting one or two chances to beat a P5.

It's an awful schedule if Marshall wants its fans to get to see how the Herd does against the big boys, regardless if it's a road game.

It's not an awful schedule if Marshall wants to cater to its elderly fan base so they can relive their FCS years and pad their record against the worst conference in the country, an HBCU FCS, and two peer-like schools.

Remember when we went to Tennessee? Ohio State? Florida? South Carolina? Clemson? man... That was a lot of fun. One of my favorite things growing up was looking forward to those marquee matchups that we had in our OOC every year.

But hey... its better to play Appalachian State so we can get a home and home....

We had a very decent OOC schedule lined up for 2020 and we saw how that played out. I like the 2021 schedule. Let's see how it plays out before we lambast it.

^This x10. Nothing wrong with one of these every year or so.

Why are some of you making light of next years schedule. It is competitive and gives a chance of having a successful OOC year. Nothing worse than going into conference play 1-3 or 0-4. Here is a little history lesson.

We returned to FBS football in 1997. Since then we have played 41 games against P-5 schools. We have a 7-34 record. One of those wins was over Temple a team that had been so bad for so long they were kicked out of the Big East the next year I believe. Here is a breakdown of each coach

BP was 4-9
MS was 0-13
DH was 3-12

I am in favor of scheduling P5 games but lets not act like we have been dominating either. MH was smart in the games he scheduled. Playing Va Tech, Purdue made sense. Playing ND will no doubt be like playing Ohio State a nice payout but playing above our head. I like the way BP approached it early on. We played 1 P5 school OOC per season. That way we could see where we were at the time. Playing 2-3 P5 schools in the past has not worked out well. Who knows if Huff has great success here maybe sometime in the future we could schedule like that and see what happens.

Soooooo........ let’s look at your opinions, and try to figure out time travel:
The year is spring 2016. AD Hamrick, sensing Doc is going to have an implosion season in the fall, sets out to schedule 2021. He knows Doc is going to bounce back in 2017, and will have winning seasons in 2018 & 2019. He also already senses a once every 100 years Pandemic striking the earth in 2020, causing the disruption of life in general & college football specifically. He knows Doc, then in his 11th season, will lead the Herd to a 7-0 record out of the gate, rising to a stratospheric ranking of #15 in the USA. With this knowledge, and additionally the fact that Doc will lose control of the team, lose the last 3 games of the season and look totally inept offensively in their bowl game, he weighs all of this against his knowing Doc will be named CotY. And yet Mike will not even be the decision-maker when then newly-named Dr. Jerome Gilbert will fire Doc & hire an unknown recruiter to be Marshall’s 1st black HC in January of 2021. So he miraculously schedules Alabama, Clemson & Ohio State for one & dones away, and convinces Tennessee to finally honor their return game from 2002 for our remaining non-con game in the Joan......
Yeah, right.
Oh, btw - Mike bets $1000 that Donald Trump will defeat Hillary for President at 500-1 odds that coming November......

I don't have any issue with the schedule. If you never been to a game at Navy, you have missed an amazing experience. I just hope covid is under some kind of control by then. I understand and like playing a I-AA team each year. We have a tradition with ECU, and we didn't get to play them in 2020. Appy St is a good opponent that has a good rep among other schools, coaches and fans. While I would agree that another P5 school might have been a bigger payday, we probably thought we'd be OK after a nice 2020 sked. A 13-0 record, and that schedule, at least gets you into consideration for a NewYearBowl, at least better than a 12-1 and a loss to a "name" team that finishes with a mediocre year. Our future schedules look OK, some gaps to fill, but the strategy looks sound and it appears we may be able to follow it. I would like to see us get back to 12-1, 11-2, 13-0 type years, then start scheduling some of the better P5 teams, or the best of the G5. Right now, we are not ready for that.

I'm not sure if that was another shitty attempt by you to be witty or not, but either way, it failed.

Nothing you said makes any sense. There doesn't have to be any time travel or guessing the future. Marshall's goal should be to win the conference, finished ranked in the top 25, and compete for the NY6 bowl slot. Hitting any of those goals will make you one of the top handful of G5s in the country. If you don't schedule any P5s, you have almost no chance of getting that bowl slot. You have no chance of refuting the voters who will downplay a great season by claiming you beat nobodies.

There is nothing worse than going 12-0, 11-1, or 10-2 and getting a shit ranking because you haven't scheduled a P5 to show your true value.

Even if Marshall's future looks bleak, you still schedule a P5 simply for a money game. At worst, you lose (which is expected) and get a payday.

Let's say Marshall runs the table next year. They will have no chance of getting the NY6 bowl slot thanks to not scheduling a P5.

Curious what you think Rifle. Are we better playing an elite school and maybe having our butt handed to us or a middle of the pack P5?A school like Purdue that we might beat. Also can we ever overcome a undefeated or one loss team from The AAC for a NYD 6 invite?

It depends on what the goal is. If the goal is to have an undefeated season, then you don't schedule any P5 (and you won't be taken seriously by most of the country regardless of your 12-0 record). If the goal is to get the highest ranking possible, you schedule a middle P5 team and beat it. If your goal is to get the NY6 slot, you schedule a couple of middle P5s or an elite P5, because there will be a G5 out there with a great record who knocks off a couple of middle P5s or a really good P5.

A one loss American who has a P5 win will win out over an undefeated C-USA with no P5 wins.

Interestingly (IMO) - even though we choked the last 3 games, 2020 will pay dividends going into ‘21. We were in the national conversation, more so and longer than anytime since 2014. So, we start this fall with a little cachet. Playing Navy to open the season will get attn IF we win, regardless of how good/bad Navy is. Another 8-9 win season could set us up for a run in ‘22. Increased attendance, excitement over new coaching staff & the return of full capacity all contribute to the momentum. “Be the ball” nanananananana....

he almost has to be a troll and not very good at it.

so I’m a troll because I’d rather play bigger name schools thanEast Carolina? I guess I’d like to see us have a shot someday at the access instead of jerking off to leftwich highlights of ECU games. Forgive me for wanting good things for the program.

Remember when MU lost at osu? Regardless of how close, a loss is a loss. MU beat Clemson in 1999 with no return game. Was MU favored in that game with Clemson?
Do you really want to play Clemson now?
UT is a dumpster fire currently with UCF's HC getting a lukewarm welcome in Knoxville, but UT still beat up MU, doubt they'd want to schedule MU because their fans seriously believe they deserve better. South Carolina, where today people would purposely forget South Carolina won, what, 1 game that year?

Hamrick has done a solid job of scheduling, MU was due for a down year in terms of quality teams so to speak, but given all the love for Appy lately and Navy being unpredictable, we may want to hold off on the criticism of the schedule for now.
