Lucky for him the impact was straight on and flush. That distribution of the force probably saved his life. My guess is he was able to get up and walk because he was in some level of shock. Reminds me of the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan where the soldier is walking around calmly on the beach looking for his arm, picks it up and walks off.
