“These are the times that try men’s souls..”

Granted, it was a bad day at the office. However, there’s one thing that you need to remember. You are a son of Marshall and with that title comes an incredible gift. It’s a gift of support, perspective, and gratitude that may not be found at any other school in the nation.

When you step on the field next Saturday, you will do so with a blanket of support from every respectable member of the Marshall family. This is a family that understands adversity and the resilience that is required to ‘fight through it” and come out in a better place.

I would love to tell you that there won’t be the stray “sunshine patriot” in attendance on Saturday afternoon. Those that have never participated in countless two-a days, juggled an academic career with the responsibilities of your team, and lived and breathed your craft 24/7. To some, the investment begins and ends with a three hour commitment in front of the television for a dozen weekends a year. Silence those voices and focus on the Marshall family that wants nothing more than for you to be a symbol of perseverance – reminding us all that we must get back up and dust ourselves off and then forge ahead.

It’s quite poignant that your next game will be during a sacred day of remembrance for our community. While it may appear to be a distant page in history, I can assure you that many in attendance on Saturday will have very fresh reflections of the impact of that fateful day from forty five years ago. Only through the strength of family, fellowship, and faith was a community able to endure. We know adversity. We know sacrifice. We know resilience. Rest assured, this spirit will be with you and each of your teammates through the support of your extended family at Marshall University.

Wishing you the best Nick. We've know your talent and ability and we're all behind you. We are...Marshall.

Keep your chin up buddy, we know how to come back when we are on our backs here at Marshall.

Nick, Here is wishing you the best for the rest of the season and career. Yesterday's game in Murfreesboro was spirited, competitive, and there was plenty of mistakes by both teams. Sure, we outlasted in the game in OT, but hold your head up and be proud of your team and your fans. Marshall coaches, players, and fans are special. I have known this since December, 1992 when our teams first met at Marshall Stadium in the 1-AA quarterfinals. Everyone has a bad day and have witnessed heartbreak as a fan and have had setbacks in my own life. This Blue Raider fan respects your efforts and your ability to win at the game of life!! Looking forward to many great games in the years ahead.

Win us a couple down the road, Nick.

Nick as the OP stated it was a bad day at the office, but you've had a bunch of good days.
I believe the rest of your 'office days' will be very good. Believe in yourself and your team; together ya'll will finish the job & GO HERD!!!

Anyone who has ever been a golfer for a length of time has had a case of the YIPS. Only thing that can fix it is to get back to the range and work it out. In Nicks defense in slow mo replay it looked like the ball wasnt in proper position on one of them.

All that said, good luck, chin up, go back to the IAF and start working on your new streak this Saturday. We are with you young man!

In the long run, we still have our goals of winning 10 games, winning the championship, getting a bowl game. Smith still has two years left, so there are many more opportunities to go and get the next one. He has my support.

I felt bad for the kid and hope he bounces back. He has got to learn to control that emotion on the field though. Crying is fine but it needs to be done behind closed doors away from the cameras and teammates and coaches. To them it shows an obvious lack of confidence. I think he will bounce back. There is a reason he was perfect up until last week. He is young.

Having said that, if he can't bounce back then we are in trouble not having a kicker. Personally I think we should have gone for it in OT even on 4th and 6 because you knew we didn't have a trusted kicker at that point. It was a higher % at that point to go for 6 yards rather than kick the FG. I think that was a huge mistake. If we convert then we possibly win the game.

I will add though that had our coaching staff not used our last TO (this boggles my mind) we could have lined up straight for the FG and I think Smith makes it and none of this stuff would have happened. So for that I blame our coaching staff. Did we ever get an explanation on why they used the TO in the 1st place???

Sometimes pain is so great that crying is the only human outlet; don't be ashamed or embarrased, to me is showed the deep hurt for the team, not yourself. I don't care if you cry every game as long as it is expression, not depression. You didn't make 13 in a row by not knowing how and being capable of making another 13 in a row. Go get em Nick; you're the best we've got so believe in yourself and kick away. God Speed young man.

Let him read the statement Michael Jordan made years ago the Ive played so many games, took so many game winning shots and failed so many times bit. The good ones fail at some point but they keep working hard to get better and better.
