Should a public school teacher lose their teaching license for getting a DUI? Career over?

Depends on the rules associated with having a "license" in the teaching career. Not sure a teaching license is monitored or controlled the same way other professional licenses are issued or maintained (i.e. medical licensing, pharmacist licensing, real estate licensing, etc)in individual states. State Boards of licensing in these industries, professions, etc do have the legal ability (obligation) to suspend or terminate a license based on inappropriate personal and/or professional misconduct; and they due regularly. Breaking a law like DUI could fit that category if a licensing board's power institutes such authority.

Shorter answer to your question: 1st offense....NO. However, if the teacher has been brought before the board for multiple other issues, offenses in the past..............Yes

I dont know about being fired but I do think there should be some public disciplinary action. School board should come out and say they are suspended and going to rehab or something like that.

In NY state(I doubt its the same rules for the NYC school system) a teacher can lose their license for a DWI, DUI, or a felony conviction

A straight up DUI. Teacher goes out for drinks. Gets pulled over. Cooperates. Fails the test and blows above 0.08 legal limit and is arrested and charged with DUI.

In NC it is revocation of your teachers license and your career is over. Professional misconduct.
