Air Force

Coach DD mentioned that on the coaches tour in Hurricane Thursday.

AFA was 11-18 and 4-13 in conference last season.....bit of a head scratcher given the distance and cost of a cross country charter.

Air Force brings name recognition, regardless of how good they happen to be at the time. I strongly feel that you play the service academies any chance you get.

This is better to our fans than some of the lower D-1’s we typically play. As far as the $$$ involved? I haven’t a clue. We played in a tournament in Las Vegas a few years back, and we did a home and home with Nevada fairly recently… as well as a home game with Stephen F. Austin the year they won a tournament game. Not sure flying to Colorado is too much different than flying to Cedar Falls, Iowa. I just don’t know.

Wouldn't mind seeing a few more Mountain West teams on our future schedules from time to time. Boise is always pretty solid and good in basketball as well as in football. Believe they are slated to return a football game in Huntington down the road. Believe we played, and beat, Colorado State in a bowl game a while back. Those, and others, e.g., Utah State, are fairly well known and respected names and teams in the G5 and Mid-major circles. I'd like to see AD Spears use this basketball serious as a basis, perhaps, to open conversations with the AFA about a similar home and home FOOTBALL series! That would certainly complete the HERD's "Trifecta" football games/series with the other Service Academies!!

I think I understood that part of the rationale to move to SBC was to more economically manage travel for teams and fan base. So scheduling MWC teams seems to be an outlier to that thinking. I'm not sure playing AFA moves the needle much in D1 hoops if you win and hopefully not lose.

Love an Home and Home with UNLV....in both sports! Thought MIke could have gotten that done but maybe he burned his bridges out there!

This is a fine pickup... One trip to Colorado isn't going to kill our basketball budget Im sure.

And I agree about playing the academies. Even if they are bad at football or basketball in a given year, they still offer more upside than playing a DII team or a 5th MAC opponent due to name recognition. I call that the "bottom line test"... When the score scrolls across the bottom line on ESPN, is anyone going to notice? If its Marshall 80, Pikeville College 50 - No... If its Marshall 80, Air Force 70 - Maybe a few.

So now people who want brand and name recognition teams (and Service Academies certainly fit that) to play 1:1 with MU...are...once more unhappy and questioning if said team is "worthy" or not?

Plenty of USAF veterans are in WV, their presence would be a nice gathering for everyone who just want a reason to do so.

Be happy and thankful someone who will actually bring people to watch, is coming to town, regardless of the records of either.

Sure beats the obligatory Shawnee State matchups we're all used to not going to.

Agree GHMY. One reason for my comment re: possible football games with the AFA. The military academies have renown and certainly nationwide exposure/recognition. Look at football last season. We walloped NAVY on the road and they certainly weren't anywhere close to a powerhouse. But that win probably gave MU more "notice" in the national mind of general college football fans than we would have gotten had we just beaten an undefeated, top 5 program at the FCS level!!

It’s freaking Air Force. I’m sure their cadet need some seat time, I’m also sure not all of their pilots will be in fighter planes. Send over a c130 hop on and boom free charter flight to Colorado

we could be playing a couple games out west. It would t be hard to pick up a couple games out there. Maybe Colorado St and Air Force or a number of other teams out that way.

This is a good point as well... We could maximize the trip and play 2-3 games out there. One flight and a couple of bus rides... Go to Air Force, Colorado State and Northern Colorado all in one road trip. Play Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

Be nice. See if you can get that worked out.

Literally about one-fourth of Division I plays at least one game in Las Vegas. During the early part of the season there are four or eight team tournaments all over the town. UNLV, UNLV's women's arena, the T-Mobile arena where the hockey team plays, the MGM Grand Garden, the Orleans Hotel, and even some HS gyms have games. Then UK, Ohio State, UCLA and UNC have a deal where they play out there every year (rotating who plays who), then UNLV's regular season, and then four conference tournaments.

Similar such tournaments held in places like Cancun, the Bahamas, Hawaii, and other tourist spots.

Every team can play in these "exempt" deals which can either be just more games or a neutral site tournament. We always play in this "Global Sports" deal with is two home games for us against bus and gym level leagues and then at some name school. The last time we did a travel tournament was the 15-16 season when we played at the UNLV women's gym. I would love to resume these travel based tournament games.

It'd be nice if we could pick up another opponent out there, like Grand Canyon, CSU or Colorado...BYU, USU...anyone decent.

Believe it was way back, SamC, during one of Huck's better seasons, we went out to Vegas and played in a men's tournament there. IIRC, we lost to Georgetown in first game but beat Clemson in the second one. That's the kind of tournament play against "real" competition that gets your team, and program, "noticed" and at the same time gets your fan base "excited"!!

I heard that the deal included that the AFA could have their team fly some of their fighter jets to Huntington and pick up our team and fly them back after the game.
