The Republicans want the cheap labor. The Democrats want the votes.

Some Republicans are pretending not to want this to appease their redneck constituencies. Like it or not, the South's gonna lose again on this one.

The good thing is something that was brought up to me in the golf course recently.

The good news is that we, white working people, still control most.of the money and assets. There is some truth to that. We might lose elections and might not be hip with the news media but we still have deeper pockets and control more.

I've often wondered if the whole liberal agenda is a ruse just to keep them all down. That's probably why most Republicans just cower to it.

They get all the essentials provided, along with mountains of cultural pity heaped on them. All to keep them from becoming important in our society.

Sounds like something concocted at a Klan meeting, but it's the Democrat party platform. I don't think the average head in the clouds liberal thinks about it. They buy the bull. The big money libs though. They know what they're paying for.

And some actually are racists. But yeah, that is basically the truth.

I have some conservative friends that go nuts when I remind then Reagan signed off on amnesty. And that bill also had the effect (one I believe that was intended) to let big rich companies off the hook by hiring illegals through subcontractors...a move that has depressed wages and benefits for plenty of workers besides immigrants.

I might add:

The argument that “Reagan and Bush did it,” is essentially an argument that future generations should not learn from the errors of previous generations. With the advantage of experience, it is clear that their decisions did not produce the desired result, and actually greatly worsened the problem they sought to solve. Let’s not repeat their mistake.

The desired result will never be made clear to the public. They all talk too long, too much and too loud. This is to get people to believe they're saying something, but they're not.

Actions speak louder than words. The actions are generally cowering to the liberals once they arrive in Washington.

Seriously though, what is the alternative to some form of amnesty? And at what cost?

Reagan said as much himself in a televised debate with Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale in 1984.
"I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally," he said.

The law granted amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants, yet was largely considered unsuccessful because the strict sanctions on employers were stripped out of the bill for passage.

Peter Robinson, a former Reagan speechwriter, agrees. "It was in Ronald Reagan's bones — it was part of his understanding of America — that the country was fundamentally open to those who wanted to join us here."

There is no alternative. We can't track down and send back all these people.

It would be nice to try to keep more of them out, but we won't. Just don't move anywhere down by the border unless you're prepared to deal with it on a large scale. Around here, you just see them doing roofing or washing dishes at fancy restaurants.

What the hell does that have to do with Amnesty? No one would deny someone the ability to come here legally which is at the heart of the discussion. The problem that must be overcome (but seemingly never will) is the ability for illegals to enter the country and then use the system to its financial detriment.

Be upset with the Democrats then. I believe they controlled congress during that period.

Raleigh... President Regan was talking about "illegal" not legal immigrants...

Oh look, here is another one going nuts.

And I know exactly what I am talking about. Do you? You even confused legal and illegal.

Of course, Reagan signed a bill passed by Congress. I oppose granting amnesty by any executive order.

You are also wrong to imply I have learned no lesson from the past. I was clear the effect of the amnesty, on more than one front, was to depress wages. Which is obviously one of my main complaints about many immigration and trade issues.

Anyway, my biggest amnesty concern has always been children illegally brought here by their parents. I don't believe in snatching up these kids who have been here for damn near their entire lives. If they are completing high school and entering the workforce, going to college or some other trade program, or entering the military, and staying out of trouble, I am all for letting them be citizens.

What we still need is super strict laws on checking legality at hire and draconian punishment for business owners who flout the law. But you and I both know that shit won't happen. Money rules DC.

Which is exactly what Reagans order was attempting to rectify.
