Nothing like a 50 point loss to deflate this board. Will i guess we are and will always be a football school

Don't forget that we did win an NCAA tournament game for the first time ever and won the CUSA Championship. Keep in mind, that 50 point loss counted as 1 game. We are exactly 1 game out of 1st place and have 2 of the top 3 teams on our schedule over the next 2 weeks.
This season is far from over. Only what happens in Frisco is all that matters.

There is more discussion of football, because an individual football game is more important, as it is 1/12th of the season, Marshall is one of 135 teams in the top division, rather than 443, and because CUSA exits for football, made up a schools all trying to be at the same level, IN FOOTBALL, with different levels of interest and commitment to basketball (and MU is in the upper group of CUSA in commitment and interest in basketball).

Our basketball discussion comes down to either thinking the regular season matters and that you can learn and make judgements based on the results of games and those whose ONLY response is "one year our 4th place in a one bid league team got hot in the conference tournament and then won one game in the NCAAs and that might happen again some year or another". Those of us who get basketball have said what we have to say, and the 50 point beatdown has quieted the one answer people. A couple of wins over the dregs of this built for football conference and they will be back. And, heck, this team MIGHT get hot in the conference tournament and who knows. Anything is possible. A coin flip will land on its edge every millionth time or so.

My point is if we had lost a football game this bad this board would be melting down. Good thing about basketball is you can suck all year and still go to the big dance if you win the conference tourney. In football the regular season counts

A little perspective:
Last year, WKU waltzed into the Henderson Center in early January. 1st conference game. We were blitzed by 25 points at home. How does a 25 point loss at home to an arch rival (not coming off a long road trip) compare to a 50 point loss on the road at the end of a 3 games in 6 days road trip? I would argue that there's not much difference....does anybody even remember that one? Probably not really. BUT - at the time, I am sure there were numerous negative comments about the program, Danny, Jon, CJ, Peneva etc. Just like that loss, the USM loss counts as ONE loss. We righted the ship, won enough games down the stretch, secured the 4th seed & the rest is history.
Will we be able to right the ship this year? As Sam likes to remind us, anything can happen (and usually does!) at the end of conference play. My advice? Take a deep breath, go the HC, yell your lungs out for the Herd and win!! Winning cures everything. It is still going to come down to holding court in the 4 home games, winning at least one of the road games and then 3-1 in the POD portion of the sked........That would put us @ 13-5..........do that and we will be at or near the top seed going to the Star.
Go Herd!!

For the NCAA maybe; but for the other three post season conference play does matter.

I'm wondering how many teams in history as lost 3 games by 40+ in one season? I'm sure not many. Not too many NCAA teams have that much apathy.

Seems like landon and others are trying to shift focus from MU having just taken (yet again) another horrible beatdown by a team with no business doing so...claiming the schedule was too hard on the team.
Yet if this happened in football, all of them would lose their minds.

Oh wait, the now existing belief is that CUSA in basketball is better...ranked in the low teens vs. football ranked 1 or 2 spots out of last.

Problem is, it doesn't matter. CUSA is a 1 bid league and will be for the future. There is the P7 pr so in basketball and everyone is is the G...24? 25? I don't know how many conferences there are...but we all get the same respect, 1 team, conference champiom and thats it.

Its just amazing the difference in basketball and football are with some.

I love your POSITIVE approach W-S...and we need more HERD basketball fans like you. In fact...we need more "any HERD sport" fans like your!

NJIT had some ridiculous losing streak for a while...I am sure they managed to lose that many in a season by that much? Not sure though.

Thanks Zilla - it's all I have known since I was too young to sit at the drugstore counter! From last year's H-D on the blowout loss to the 'Tops:

"They had already busted us in the mouth when Ajdin went out," Marshall freshman guard Jarrod West. "They just busted us from start to finish."

Let's see what happens!

Lots of people on here enjoy that much more than a win.

That is just not true. No one here, or in any way associated with MU sports "enjoys" MU losing at anything.

It is like being a parent. You tell your kid not to play in the street because it is dangerous. That doesn't mean you are happy when it gets run over. Similarly, those of us who have a critical (I would say realistic) view of basketball are very much not happy to see us lose. We just are not surprised.

Last year there were no expectations to succeed in conf or make ncaa tournament. Much less win a game. This year was overly hyped by many on this board, expectations were running high. People didn’t expect Elmore and CJ to have the years they did. Add all that together and 50 point loss this year doesn’t come close to equaling a 25 point loss last year.

Fair points. Just tell me the last time we were dominated at home by 25.......

And we are 1 game behind UTSA and UNT for first place. If we hold service at home and split the 2 road games,. we will enter pod play no worse than 2nd place.

Also the heavy favorite MTSU was upset early in the tournament so we dodged a pretty big bullet there.

I understand that we have to win the conference tournament if we want an NCAA bid, but that isn't going to happen every year. It would be nice if we could play well enough in our OOC and conference schedules to at least get consideration for NIT bids when we don't win the conference tournament.
