It's a far better conference and better pay but for what is going to be a very unstable program/head coach.
Syracuse's last eight years are:
8-5, 7-6, 3-9, 4-8, 4-8, 4-8, 10-3, 5-7.
Babers himself is 4-8, 4-8, 10-3, 5-7. Other than one great year, he has done absolutely nothing differently from the previous coach who was fired for the same results, but Babers was given an extension based on one winning season with a very experienced team that he didn't recruit.
West has both defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator experience. Giving him one of those titles and the salary bump associated could have helped. Many coaches will forgo a jump in program/conference if it means they become a coordinator, which is why it's very common for position coaches at P5 schools to take coordinator positions at G5 schools.
Either way, it's not good for a program to continue losing coaches regardless if it's for an inferior position (analyst at FSU/lower position at Colorado State) or for what is perceived as a superior position (Marshall to Syracuse at the same position). It's a head coach's job to recruit his coaches as well as he recruits his players. But as we've seen, both the recruiting of players and the recruiting of coaches has been poor.
