I actually kind of enjoyed watching that last year to be honest. Funny signs and that crazy ass Ojeda guy. Kind of feel sorry for him. He is Section 8 material. Guy needs some help and I hope he gets it.

But, anyway, GK you all walking out this year or not? Or, do things look good up there?

Might be cold walking out now. Wait until next week.

When is the big fat gov up for reelection. Last time I saw him was on a video of a kid from Logan County playing the fiddle for him. Kid was really good and the governor could not even stand up. Had to sit in a chair. He is not looking so good.

I hope not herdman. But there’s a new omnibus education overhaul plan that has been making the rounds that’s caused quite a stir. One of the things that’s in it is increasing the limits of class size of elementary1-6 to 31 students. That’s so absurd that it’s hard to believe it made it in a bill. It also includes the hot button items of charter schools and tenure. A political maneuver was done by Carmichael that passed it along in the senate with a voice count and a bypass of the finance committee. But it has no chance in the House (I think) and the governor has promised veto. Most people believe that it’s retaliatory postururing by the senate leadership in response to last year’s strike. Mingo County did vote to agree in principle to walk out if it advanced, but my initial instinct is that this thing isn’t going anywhere.

I’m just two years away from retirement. I could probably retire now if I really wanted to, but I still have a little energy in me and I really enjoy the kids. My daughter and neices are all young teachers so the whole fight is for them anyway.

What's the charter school fight? People are against them?

I think the school of thought is that they will rob funding from the public schools.
I just read some sob story from back home about how charter schools will leave kids with special needs out and how the teachers are talking about this to 10 year old in school?

Really, well WV, I hate to tell your schools aren't real good and you have a high percentage of kids not getting college degrees. Maybe you should try something different. You've lost about two generations of people who move elsewhere. Hellllooo.

From what I’ve read/heard, I really like a lot of what charter schools provide. I’m not sure how it works in a rural state & not at all a fan of the funding method where school boards becoming tax levying bodies.

But something has to change & im not sure it happens any other way.

It's fine and dandy if...and it is a BIG if...charter schools are required to actually have qualified teachers AND show results. The WV proposal is much the same as in Indiana...neither are required.

And how a charter school can not show results when it can cherry pick students is beyond me.

I hear that. I just wish the whole education system could be rethought & overhauled. Scrap it and start from scratch.

I’m pretty liberal, but what pushes me to that is the more progressive social ideas. It just pains me to see education Unions/Democrats, stuck in the “this is how we’ve always done it” BS. Despite its many flaws, at least the republicans are trying something.

I was 3 semesters away from earning my teaching certification. There are so many good ideas out there to advance education through technology & creative ideas. But until there’s something to shake the system up, advancement will never be a priority.

One thing I have learned is there are far more kids in school today with troubled backgrounds who have zero interest in being there. We had kids like that when I was in school, but man the numbers and insanity are over the top today. Yesterday at my Mom's school there were SIX girls arrested for fighting. I don't mean a catfight, I mean a full-out ECW hard-core match. A total street brawl in the school, fighting the teachers that tried to break it up, throwing chairs, chair shots, just insanity. Every day they are dealing with crazy stuff. And this is an "award winning school district".

I think schools today do better than ever with kids who are stable and want to learn. Some of the stuff my daughter took in high school was not even available when I was young. And the school system paid for her to take college classes in the evening.

I don't know what the answer is for the kids in a socioeconomic hole.

That's because back then they kicked their ass out and sent them to Ona to the farm and then Prunytown if it got bad enough. Also, if you were nuts you were not integrated in.

They didn't put up with it.

And how productive are those people in society today?

Probably as productive as the morons will turn out in Raoul's example. At some point, you have to have some order and discipline.

Those idiots are a distraction is what they are. We just go down to the lowest common denominator.

Probably or probably not? That's an awful strong stance to have on something that you maybe/possibly/could be pretty sure about.

I don't fully disagree with you and it's a big reason why I'm open to charter schools when I used to not be. Something has to change and the unions and old fvck democrats won't allow for creative thought/debate.

Well that is what it boils down to you. your last statement.

20% of kids got sent to Prunytown? Because that's probably the percentage of kids around here from fvcked up backgrounds, don't give a shit, etc. I bet there are schools in Louisville where it is at least 50%. Do they all beat the shit out of each other? No. So don't focus on my example of insanity. Think more about why many schools "score" so bad. I don't think they really even tracked that shit when we were kids. Now it is high-stakes.

Oh, I know. I could comment but I would not want to be labeled for saying what a big part of the problem is. Let me guess the 50% in Louisville?????

Crazy thought, but I think the kids who struggle need more time in the schools. Feed them dinner, give them reinforcements, work on their physical fitness, etc. Go to year-round schools. The more time they spend in schools, the better. Because it's less time they're at home with their terrible/absent parents.

It's not crazy at all. That's actually what they do here. The schools are even open for lunch during Christmas and Spring Breaks for the kids to come in and eat....and they send them home with food for dinner in case there is none at school.

Nothing wrong with saying the black community has a problem, when it certainly does have a problem. It's not just black, though.

Want to do something interesting? Go to the black/poor part of a big city, and look around at all the ruins. So many jobs left over the last few decades. Entire blocks razed where jobs once were. You know this is one thing I agree with Trump on...I just know a lot of the jobs are never coming back. Automation, cheap foreign competition. Not everyone has the skills and brains for high-tech manufacturing (that is where we still kick ass). It's sad. It's hard for a community to dig itself out of a very deep hole of single parents, welfare, crime, drugs, etc with no local jobs. This sounds kinda crazy, but I swear the worst thing to ever happen to West Louisville was when the big cigarette plant closed.

Focus on rebuilding the family. Many of the problems with education will fix themselves

Focus on fixing jobs too. Loss of jobs/incomes tore a lot of families apart, created welfare culture, etc.
that's the problem. it is easier to go offer people in that situation free shit. that's what the politicians do.
