It's the only work of John Kennedy Toole (besides a book he wrote at 16 yo). The book is centered around the character Ignatius J Reilly, a 30 year old live at home intelectual misanthrope. The book is absolutely hilarious. The author, JKT committed suicide at age 32 when he failed to get the book published. It is now on most modern top 100 book lists. I never really understood the popularity and critical acclaim of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye which centers around a whiny Holden Caulfield after he gets expelled from a private school and his returning home. CitR is required reading in many high schools and college literature courses, but in my opinion Confederacy of Dunces is better as far as books carried by single characters. It isn't John Steinbeck good but as far as pure comedy and entertainment you can't beat it.
