WVU announced that they are laying off 875 employees at their various campuses. WVU officials estimate it will save the university approximately $4 million dollars. President Gilbert had previously stated that Marshall is financially sound. No word yet but one has to wonder in light of other institutions around the country doing the same thing due to the uncertainty regarding fall classes.

sure we are. Doctor Gilbert has already said how many millions of $$ we need to cut. He just hasn't announced personnel numbers yet that I am aware

I wonder if any schools can or will use donated money to offset COVID losses. I realize that its not as simple as that, and that many of these dollars are restricted regarding their use, but if its between shuttering programs and laying off teachers and building a baseball stadium, is it really a question?

I don't see any way around it. I would say this is just the beginning.

Faculty has not heard. Fall enrollment is underway. No one talking numbers yet.

This worries me.
Students on campus drives the local economy and if MU can't fill those dorms thats not good.
I wouldn't be shocked if MU has 30% less students on campus.
Hopefully they can use this time to expand on their online courses and reach to as many people as possible with a really good set of online programs.

Ohio University layed off 140 last week.
That is truly devastating for a small town like Athens. You assume that most of those 140 people live in Athens or in the very close proximity. That is devastating to the economy

I don’t know how to share the article on here but Forbes just did an article on the situation at Ohio University and the impending economic impact upon Athens. A scary read as the same situation is about to occur in many college towns including Huntington.

At some point the American people are going to have to decide do we sit and have this economic situation or do we go back to work and roll the dice.

All I can say is standing in a soup line is not a good deal either. When the govt workers and those getting all these bailouts start losing their paychecks the tune will change.

If I am Marshall. I am waiving the metro fee and giving kids in the metro area instate tuition. Hopefully this would help enrollment and lessen the bleed to OU Southern, Morehead and others.

Yep, it’s easy to say - lets continue to isolate - if you get a sure fire government check, pension or SSI as the primary income source.
We’re never gonna get rid of this virus completely, not even close. Gotta get the economic engine started again.

“Overblown media charade.” Tell that you the families of the over 60,000 dead. What an insensitive comment.

California State University system (includes 23 universities) will not hold classes on campus this fall. Announced today. This includes San Jose State and others. Goodbye fall football at those schools and those on their schedules.

Glad you are not a principal/superintendent/college president responsible for the health and well being of your students. Guess you just want football regardless of what happens. You going to be happy staying home?

Bigger picture and Marine asked the question below.

"What do you say to the 33 million people now unemployed who have no idea how to pay their bills or provide food for their family"

I’m not staying home, I’ve worked every day

The fear of it spreading to the point of it overrunning our hospitals has been confused with the fear of it spreading at all.
This thing went way too far. That was the point, not to overrun the hospitals. Now it is lets stop doing everything until it is gone. That was never the intent.

Can't wait for this answer.

the answer is all the families who might think of sending their kids to Marshall who financially can’t now. I understand all y’all’s wanting to discredit this, but if you as Marshall faithful are wanting to discredit this, it’s not helping the cause. Higher ed is in trouble and Marshall isn’t immune whatever y’all believe.

Well, no shit. The entire country has been shut down. States are broke and their tax revenue is drying up. Local govt is broke and unversities are broke. People are going broke. Business are going broke.

We need to get the country back open.

Right. I think we all want that. But if a university isn’t taking this seriously, a parent may not send their kid to Marshall vs another school who is. $$ is gold right now. And people are watching y’all are saying.

Well, you have to cut the apron string sometime. Little Johnnny and Little Susy will be ok,

I thought Emmert said the other day if all FBS schools were not in session WITH students on campus that there wouldn't be a 2020 season.

I saw an Associated Press story where the projection is up to 75K will die in the next year due to suicide, caused by depression and economic ruin.

There's a video up of an official admitting that if you die and we're suspected of having Covid-19 then you recorded as a COVID-19 death. Even if it's clear you died of a completely unrelated cause.

She even gave an example of someone who was already in hospice.

I have zero trust in any stat coming out.

My dad just spent 4 days in the ER after falling out of a tree and the nurses were telling him how they've barely had any COVID-19 patients.

This thing is being blown way out of proportion. We can debate why, but it has been.

Emmett has as much say in this as you or I. Each state will do as they please. Each conference will do as they please. There’s nobody in charge, the inmates run the prison.

This is my projection: "The "OBGYN's" will be overworked and underpaid, hospitals will have to turn pregnant women away during the months of December of 20, January & February & possibly even March of 2021.
