...for the Friday night after Turkey Day home game. I am told this is a major upgrade in competition.....They were supposed to be in a game w/Ole Miss & it got scrapped? If this is confirmed I would have to think Coach Cline has come through again in the scheduling dept...
Meister - am I correct on the substitute opponent?

We are "idle" on Turkey Day, IIRC, Coppin State on Weds. and then Ark. St. on Fri. Guess Coppin St. and Ark. St. play on Thurs at the CAM. I guess this is still a "tourney" of some kind; one of those formerly known as an "exempt" events.

Yes. Sorry, I didn't see this until now. The Red Wolves are picked 4th of 6 in the SBC West. 9th of 12 in the entire SBC

That’s a heck of an upgrade. 🤔

No game tonight. Marshall-Arkansas State a go for Friday at 4 as of right now

atl - solid lineup! For probably the 1st time since Danny took over, we are 1st team 2nd team depth-wise. Looking forward to tip off!

Bottom line is that this "multi team" event has ended up being another 2 teams, 1 game affair. Ho hum. So as I understand it we are limited to 25 games overall instead of 27 for the regular season. If MU ever wants to end up growing its national Rep in basketball it, meaning Coaches and Administration, need to find ways to get into some of the better, quality in season tourneys where we can play some Major foes on neutral courts and ditch these Global tourneys we've been in yearly where we play a bunch of "who dats" at home and then go on the road to a major as a "sacrificial lamb".

I know for a fact that the coaching staff begs the athletic administration for the money to go to a early season tournament. Denied every year. When the Xavier event fell through we were able to pick up the remaining MTEs in that event and host ourselves. The administration was on the hook for about $200k had the event been played out

That's where, Herdmeister, HERD fans, alums, and, yes, the Coaching staff needs to let Hamrick and, if necessary, Pres. Gilbert, know where some policy changes need to be made. When CUSA schools like MU realize some additional revenue $$$ resulting from the NCAA payouts from the basketball tournament thanks to "recent" success by schools like MTSU, MU, etc., then the school needs to direct a goodly portion of said funds solely for the benefit of the BASKETBALL program itself. There's one source of funding for things like quality tournament participation. Another area: say the men's basketball program, in a "normal" season, has good results on the floor which ends up with average game attendance growing, say, from 5,500 a game to 6,500 per game. X amount of additional revenue/$$$ from the 1000 additional fans per game in the CAM NEED to go directly into the basketball program and enhancements.

Can’t blame the administration for not going to one of the early season invites....there are 3 main things that go into those and unfortunately Marshall doesn’t fit into any of the 3. The Maui Classic, Paradise Jam, College of Charleston invites are all scheduled 2-3 years in advance. Majority of teams invited to these name events are “name programs”....strike 1 for Marshall basketball.....secondly programs that are invited need to be able to sell tickets and bring fans or draw enough interest in area to have tickets and draw tv eyes....that’s strike 2 for Marshall basketball.....and 3 you talk to other coaches that have played in these things a great deal of it also includes coaches networking and helping each other out and pulling strings with these tournament committees to get their friends in with them......Danny hasn’t got that going for him as he’s not networked in with many at the college level at all and doesn’t do much on the brand coaches tours or the NABC events at the Final Four cities.....and that leads to strike 3.....

I know for a fact that Marshall has been invited to at least 2 since Danny has been here and he was denied playing

“If” that’s the case, Marshall hasn’t been invited to one of the big 3.....the smaller ones I can see...those don’t get sponsor help so yeah Marshall on the hook for travel, food, lodging etc.....so go to play a small invite with little to no tv coverage, and pay $$$$, or get 3 home games vs pretty much same competition and then get a check to face the big team is what the options are. That’s pretty simple answer.

In a normal, non pandemic season, there are many in season tourneys, not just a "big 3", and in many of those tourneys, there are games between majors and mid majors. Gives mid major schools opportunities to play quality teams at neutral venues. And those teams are certainly not "pretty much same competition" as Herd fans usually are subjected to in the CAM in the annual Global tourney, many of whom are bottom feeders from the MEAC and the like. Just saying as MU hopefully finds more round ball success going forward the caliber of the schedule needs to improve and upgrade, just like, hopefully, the recruiting is upgraded. Ideally, the Athletic Administration would be on board with such upgrades!

They would have been against some good competition. One was in the Bahamas that they hoped to enter when that event was being played. Danny just wants to be playing some top 25 teams on a neutral floor to get our name out there. Like he said, that is exactly what Gonzaga did back in the day, Nobody would go to play Gonzaga on their floor. They could go on the road like we have done and lose, like they did. But to buy your way into a big holiday event you had a chance. They did that year after year and then it got to be that the majors would play at Gonzaga. Once they developed a name there was no shame to lose to them if that was the result.
