Assistant Coaches

Are any of Huff’s hires better than their predecessors? That’s a definite no for the WR and DB coaches.
Not sure .I am sure some are as good. I will say that the new DC seems lost. Cramsey is still average at best. The special teams is a mess we need to change things up

We always have had our best players playing Special Teams. You can tell with the coaching changes Huff really does not value (ST).

Defensively: I’ve never witnessed such awful DB play, we don’t turn around to find the ball we just blatantly grab WRs every play. This has been a reoccurring issue this entire season. Same DB did exact same thing two plays in a row against MTSU, under Doc we had 15 yard cushion and under Huff we just tackle receivers… can we not just some descent DB coverage? We need to teachthe DBs to look back for the ball, (fundamentals)most the time they’re in the right possession anyways. Huff needs to have a coming to Jesus with his DB coach. Offensively: Ali is explosive utilize him more, can we stop running the ball one time than throwing 4 40+ yard bombs hoping for that one big catch? Don’t we have one of the best O-lines in the country supposedly? It’s cost us 3weeks in a row now and slow the pace down and Establish the run which opens the passing game. I still think Wells is going to be great but if doesn’t perform put Zban in. It’s been painful to watch, it’s been such along time since we have been relevant and I always thinks this will be the year! At least with all this disappointment over the last 10-15yrs it’s become easier to swallow (just shows how far we’ve fallen) hoping for a more hyped and better performing team the remainder of the year. GO HERD

This has driven me crazy the past few games... We have a drive going where we are getting 5-7 yards every rush and instead of cramming it down teams middle and letting the offensive line and Ali cook, we throw three straight passes at our opponents 30-40 yard line and kill the drive/turnover/punt.

Offense is scoring points. Need to play better defense
The offense is setting a historic pace on turnovers. We are averaging 1.6 INTs and 1.4 fumbles per game and putting the ball on the ground an average of 2.4 times per game. That's insane and if the trend continues the turnover numbers will be some of and possibly the highest in school history and blow any Doc or Snyder season out of the water. Even with our crap defense if the offense doesn't turn the ball over we are 5-0 EASILY and I hate our defense.

Gammage doesn't fumble and ECU never has a comeback and we go into Appy with a better focus. Then there's MTSU. We lost by 6 to MTSU and one of our fumbles went 91 yards for a score.

No every facet of this team is horrible right now. The NAVY game is a complete aberration from the rest of the season and even then we coughed the ball of 4 or 5 times.

exactly. we need to take care of the ball. the propensity to turn it over is concerning.

As a former coach I don't think we work on ball security drills.
I have a feeling we do, but pay it lip service at best. like we can check the box when Grant askes if you do ball security drills, and coach says 'oh yes'. But when the ball hits the ground they are told to do better.

I honestly believe that McDaniel was put in the game and Ali had been benched but then knowledge coughs up the ball.

Credit to the guy that laid the hit on that one though. He put his helmet right on the ball. The others were just awful. The first one that Ali had it looks like he just threw the ball.

I can't believe at this stage they need a drill for them to know to keep the ball tight and not hang it out there. I almost see it has selfishness. I saw some highlights of Desean Jackson from either this season or last and he was carrying the ball in one hand like a baton. That's just a level of selfishness and being a hotdog.

I don't think drills are the answer. I think benching them is the answer. Maybe even not allowing them to dress for a game. The message has to get sent that the ball is everything and it is to be protected at all costs or you don't play.

I know some will say that may be harsh that we may need _________ player for the game, but having some of these guys out there is costing us games too. What good does Ali do this team if he is coughing the ball up 2 times a game. He and Evans need to relegated to the scout team until they learn to hold on to the ball.

Maybe it's just me but I think ball security drills should be included in every offensive practice. I also agree that if you make a habit of putting the ball on the ground that you sit the bench and I think that's exactly what happened with Ali.

I mean I am sure they help, but this is horrifically bad. A lot more than some drills has to happen. A strong message needs to be sent. We have 8 INTs and 12 fumbles (7 lost) on the season. That's only five games. That's 15 total turnovers. We're on pace for 36 turnovers on the season. Since 2007 (the furthest I could find on Herdzone) the most we've had is 27 and that was in 2011. We had 15 INTs, 16 fumbles with 12 lost.

We are currently 128/130 in fumbles lost and tied for 122/130 for INTs thrown. Huff needs to pull out everything at his disposal to fix this.

I agree. Doing them every time establishes the significance. For people that work in construction or manufacturing, it is equivalent to starting each day with a safety huddle. We are saying this is very important.

And after those safety huddles if you still have an employee that is taking unnecessary risks putting both he and the crew at risk what do you do then? Another safety huddle? No you take him off the job. One of my jobs over the last several years involved running heavy equipment. Those that violated safety rules were immediately terminated or at least had their license suspended. That caused the rest of us to makes sure we were running the equipment with extreme care and awareness at all times both when operating and supervising.

I highly doubt that we haven't been running drills in practice. If not that says a lot about the coaches. So how many drills does it take? How many times does Ali need his arm slapped with practice pad before the light comes on in the game not to carry the ball like a loaf of bread. The same for Gammage and Evans.

Seeing someone else take their reps sends a message that if you want to play you will secure the ball. It's funny that Huff keeps making comments about McDaniel's practice habits and needing to earn the trust of his coaches and teammates. How horrible does he look in practice if he can't get more reps over the two guys in front of him that have six (Ali 4, Evans 2) fumbles in five games between them.

Instruction only does so much. At some point disciplinary measures have to be applied.

I am not advocating for Ali and Evans to be benched for an entire game or games. However neither should start this week. Let McDaniel and Payne take over at #1 and #2 and then work Ali and Evans into the game later on.

Do we hold Cramsey accountable for fumbles now?
Offense kept MU within striking distance to win, defense let up and kept them out of it.

My question is, has this DC topped Rippon's terrible defensive schemes?
You think the defense let up and kept us out of it? McDaniel's fumble spotted them 7 points and we lost by 6. I don't think the defense played great, but if we don't have 6 turnovers we most likely win that game. Shoot even if the drive McDaniel fumbled on doesn't turn into points for us (which it was going to) we still win the game.

It was at least going to be 28-17 at that point and we outscored them 14-0 after that drive so the the final would have been at least 31-28.

While our defense has been pretty bad all season, our offense is even worse.

Go back to ECU. If Gammage doesn't fumble he scores a TD and ECU never has a comeback. Shoot if Cramsey doesn't draw up a back shoulder fade on 4th&2 the clock keeps running and ECU runs out of time. Not to mention he has no clue how to dictate the flow of the game. It's just bombs away all day even when it makes zero sense.
