Bandwagon soccer fans

You don't have to be a soccer fan to be a Herd fan.
Watching the game, I did find it boring until we took the lead....then I found myself into it. What will always hurt soccer in the US is that the majority of games will NEVER be televised. There’s just no room for commercials, and halftime is when everyone makes their bathroom or food break. I know very little about the game, but it appeared that our players were in far better condition. They played fast when they needed. It took me a while, but we just made UNC run and run and run. Couldn’t figure out for the longest why when we had the ball we’d play back to our own goal keeper and let him keep setting things up. I may be wrong, but I’d guess he touched the ball more than anyone from either team.

That’s just false. There’s a ton of soccer televised in the US.
To the extent of football or basketball, even college baseball? I’m not putting it down, just saying there’s not much of an opportunity to sell marketing or advertising and that’s what drives sports in this country.

The most amazing thing about this tournament run is many of the posters here seem to know little or nothing about soccer and how strategy plays a huge role in deciding matches.
And nobody cares that they don’t. They love the Herd and that’s all that matters. We’re all learning the sport from Coach Grassie and the team as we go, and that’s alright.

No, not to the extent of football or basketball. But you said most games are never televised. That’s just not true. The EPL has a big time tv contract in the US and every MLS team has a regional television deal. ESPN is also airing 32 MLS games in 2021. ESPN+ is streaming another 300.

I am in this group. I don't know much about the game but winning and supporting our team is a ton of fun!

But a national title shot is huge. Wouldn't matter to me if it is Tiddley Winks. Go herd
I agree. ESPN had one of their sport story shows about Vanderbilt never winning a National Championship in anything until they finally won one in women’s bowling. One of the biggest things to ever happen to the school in sports.

has a team from WV won a major sport title a the highest division? I am guessing wvu in rifle shooting would be the closest thing and I am not sure that would be considered a major sport. Herd won the IAA titles but that was not D1A.

I was watching soccer the other day. I sat for two hours and the score was nothing to nothing. Wouldn’t you know I went away for one measly hour and came back and I’ll be damned if someone didn’t score and win the game.

But seriously....I’ll be watching Monday, although I know very little about the game. When Marshall kicks the ball in the net I’ll cheer. That’s all I need to know.

The answer is no. And NOBODY outside of Morgantown cares about a co-Ed target shooting win.

All I know is Marshall is playing. The only other thing I know is that it is excruciatingly boring until the last minute.

But. I will be there. Not missing it.

I don’t think a team from WV has won a major college national championship in a spectator sport, but I could be wrong.

West Virginia college national champions, AFAIK:

WV State, 1948 & 1949 Colored Intercollege Athletic Association basketball (then the highest level they could compete at)
Marshall 1948 NAIB (now NAIA) basketball (then the 2nd highest level as the NCAA College Division, what is now NCAA Div II was not established until 1957)
Charleston 2017 & 2019 NCAA Division II soccer (2nd highest level)
Marshall 1992 & 1996 NCAA Division I-AA football (2nd highest level)
WVU 1983 - 84, 86, 88 - 93, 95-98, 2009, 2013-17 NCAA all-division rifle (there are no divisions in rifle)
Bethany 1994 NCAA Div III soccer (Div III is non-scholarship)

Marshall’s Cyber Defense Team recently won a National Championship. That’s sort of, kind of, a little bit a sport.
I know I’m grasping, but it’s better than rifle shooting.

I want to say they competed against almost 200 schools too, where in rifle it’s against like 7

There are 28 NCAA rifle schools. The service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, the state military schools (VMI, Citadel, and North Georgia), Akron, UAB, Alaska-Fairbanks, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, John Jay, Kentucky, Memphis, MIT, Morehead State, Murray State, Nebraska, NC State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, TCU, Tennessee-Martin, UTEP, WVU, and Wofford.

There are 206 NCAA Division I men's soccer teams. The SEC does not have soccer, UK and South Carolina are in CUSA; the Big 12 does not have soccer, WVU is in the MAC.
