We looked like a solid team ready to take on the rest of our opponents, BUT...

Does anyone have concerns about the defense? Yes, our defense got the shut out, but that was such a bad team we played last night. They kept stepping on their own feet. The slant also still appears to be Heater's Kryptonite. I know the defense is young and I think Heater does a great job overall, but he and the defense have some work to do and fast.

The passing game is going to be something special. Running game...Tony Pittman had a fairly good game last night, but not so much with the others. Maybe we were just testing out a lot of plays and it's hard to assess.

This is all purely just my opinion. I'm curious what everyone else thinks?

I think it was game 1. For this game to be the first game of the season and for us to come out and play like we did on both sides of the ball is a win.

MS didn't belong there last night.

Our defense was hitting HARD. Great to see, we caused some turnovers. Our wide outs made plays when Chase put the ball up.. If anything the run blocking is the only concern to take away but I think we're just fine.

First game.

I think the offensive line needs to quit reading the paper and believing what's written about them. Run blocking looked horrible. No run blocking at all. Defense looked fast to me , maybe fastest ever. Pass game still inconclusive , we had too many mismatches. Garet Morel has some great form, but I'm glad we have Chase. Overall decent win but really Morgan State gave up by the 2nd qtr. I felt for their coach, but like a true professional he kept coaching up his team.

Akron will be ready. Bowden has this game circled. He knows even as bad as the Bad12 is this year , if crotchbilly loses a couple like an okie state that job opens up and the bowdens are all over getting it, and they have the contacts to make it happen. Akron will be sky high, and hoping were looking past to UL. We had better be ready.

It was a great tuneup game, especially for a young team. A lot of players got valuable live experience, and Marshall did what you are supposed to do in a name the score kind of game. The real danger after a game like this, is players getting to cocky and thinking they can just turn it on when needed. That is usually when upsets or near upsets Georgia, Clemson. etc.. happen.

We do not need to be playing the Morgan States, Norfolk States, and Gardner-Webbs of the FCS world! The 19,000 in attendance should tell MH fans ain't interested in that type of competition. Heck we should have played Youngstown State based on our former history and the crowd would have been better.

the announced attendance was over 26,400. I was there and had guessed about 27-28,000.

I actually started to feel bad for their players. I mean, I would have guessed they were Division II level. However, even though they failed to score, their ability to run on us is a concern.

I agree, YSU would probably have given us quite a game.

Morgan was easy but it's not like big time programs don't play FCS as well.

WVU isn't that good and YSU is a decent FCS team.

Did I miss something? They had 47 yards rushing, only averaged 1.3 yards per carry, and didn't have a run longer than 9 yards in the game. Also, we didn't play the 1 defense together for more than 15 snaps I would bet.

I was at the game Ohio Herd (sit in 114) but it did not look like the 27-28,000 you say you saw. Perhaps I need new glasses!

I was pleased with the D. I know Morgan was not a good team, however, Durant was a BEAST!. Bee and Thompson are great bookends. And what of Harris in the middle - the dude is massive out there I felt we had the best depth on the DL in a while. Our offense looked solid. A few thing one could gripe about but overall a solid performance. Next week we will get a better idea of where we are.

We rolled.

No biggie as we were supposed to. However my concern is that We played a terrible team.

And we all know they were not a good team. This was for all purposes a scrimmage game. To make sure the light s and scoreboard worked properly. (Yes I'm alluding to another thread)

My concern is that even though the offense rolled, we were only 2 for 11 on third downs against a terrible defense.

That's a stat we need to pay attention to.

Technically, you are missing a few details. They had 67 yards rushing with one player having 6 carries with an average of 4.5 yards per carry. Maybe he's the player that stood out in my mind who made it seem like they were doing a fair job at running on us. The one QB they played with lost 20 yards from running backwards, so the net gain was 47. Either way, my intent is not to complain.

As for how many snaps the 1st string defense took, I don't know either.

I really only started the thread to get conversation going about everyone's opinion of the game. As usual, the super fans can't handle it.

I thought it was a solid 26000
26,000 are the tickets sold. No way there were 26k there. In fact just around me, there were 5 empty seats that are sold to season ticket holders that weren't at the game. I'm sure that happened all over the stadium.

Well then there couldn't have been 26k there....

who really cares? A vast majority of schools report tix sold. That's money in the AD's pocket. Fine by me. Morgan was the worst team I have ever seen in the Joan. In addition the to storm rolling in at halftime.
Darn it, can we ever get rid of the rain!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh!

I post this every year so here goes. ALL school report official attendance as all tickets sold and distributed and EVERYONE with a pass. I have never been to a sporting event that had 100% attendance, there are always no shows. One of the reasons season ticket sales are so important, bank the money and don't worry if they show up. I make about 3 Marshall games a year, 3 Ohio State, and 3 Duke but the tickets are always used.

I will never understand why anyone would buy season tickets and not come to games. Especially since we haven't seen football for so long and the 1st week off. I couldn't wait to get to th3 stadium all week!! I just can't fathom not going to an opener when I've waited this long for football. Beautiful day except halftime.

are you trying to engage our gag reflexes?

probably make a couple Yankee and Cowboy games too...... :p

No I don't have family that are alumni or played ball or have a decades old relationship with the Yankees or Cowboys. If you gaged well that's icing on the cake. ;)

the only thing they had decent success with was Heater's Achilles heal.............the quick slant...........

19k might have been after halftime when the rain came. Start of the game looked every bit of 26-27K, they did a good job of showing it on TV for sure. It did thin out a lot when rain set in.

Fun Fact about Football: quick slants are everyone's "Achilles Heal."

Bonus Fun Fact: There are no defensive plays that simultaneously prevent against the run, the screen, the slant, the hook, the post, the streak, the flea-flicker and the Statue of Liberty play. Covering one thing usually means leaving something else open. I know, its crazy.

Hey look who is back.

Are you going to cry about posters like you do on herdhaven???

That's not necessarily true, you can defend the quick slant, but as you say, if you do what is necessary to defend it, can leave someone else open. Catch is, if you choose not to defend it, they have no reason to stop doing it.....

Good point. Frank Solich only needs one play to keep beating us and that play would be...you guessed it, the slant! Over and over as if it's the crane technique. If do right, no can defend.
