Ok, lets get one thing straight. Litton did NOT look as bad as Birdsong at Ohio
Birdsong's stat line vs. Ohio - 16-33 (48.5%) 106 yards 0 TDs and 2 INTs
Litton's stat line vs. WKU (a much better team than Ohio) - 19-38 (50%) 230 yards 2 TDs and 2 INTs
Now, while Litton's stat line is not a good one and one of his worst games of the year, that stat line is much better than what Birdsong put up against the Bobcats.. Litton's game also looks even better when you take into account that Litton got ZERO run support yesterday afternoon. Our leading rusher had a whopping 7 yards against WKU, that allowed the Hilltoppers to not be concerned with the run and devote extra players into coverage or bring extra men on pressure blitzes.
Birdsong at Ohio DID have run support.. Devon Johnson rushed for nearly 200 yards that night, Ohio played to stop the run loading the box and leaving us with several one on one match-ups that Birdsong just couldn't take advantage of. With that said, both QB's poor games were not entirely on them.. In both contests our WRs got little to no separation on most plays and our Online had subpar outings (they've been pretty subpar ever since we lost Van-Horn honestly, whose loss in my opinion has been just as hard on this team if not more so than the loss of Devon Johnson)
We missed Tommy Shuler more than we missed Cato.. Litton played well enough most of the year to soften the Cato loss, but we never had that one WR that we could count on to come up with a catch when it was 3rd and 4.. Shuler was our consistency in the WR core and he also opened up lots of opportunities for the outside guys.. Opportunities they struggled to find without him.
