Birdsong

Sitting at the game cocky watching our "team" the short time Birdsong got in (4th Qtr) he was not "horrible." I agree that Litton makes Freshman mistakes.

Well, no need to risk getting Chase hurt when the game was over, he is the FUTURE. So he had a bad day, he's a true freshman, it happens. All things considered, he led this young herd team to 9 and possibly 10 wins in his FIRST year as a college QB. Chase is good and will be a monster next year.

Chase is the future and has had a tremendous season, but he's led us to 8 wins, not 9. Inserting him ahead of Birdsong was the right call, but Chase had zero part in beating Purdue. Doesn't take anything away from his tremendous FR season, just giving Birdsong his due for the one game we did win with him as our starting QB.

I feel for Birdsong. If I'm doc next season begins with no guarantees. Let the battle re begin. Chase played great for a true frosh qb, but if birdsong puts in the work over the offseason .....

If Birdsong could get over his locking in on his primary receiver, and continue through the progression, he might bounce back into contention...stay tuned

I don't look for Birdsong to be back. He will want to go somewhere where he is guaranteed to play with it being his Sr season. We will be hurting at QB next year if he goes unless we can secure a JUCO QB IMO.

Yes cocky I was in Athens and today at Bowling Green where Litton was just as bad.

Ok, lets get one thing straight. Litton did NOT look as bad as Birdsong at Ohio

Birdsong's stat line vs. Ohio - 16-33 (48.5%) 106 yards 0 TDs and 2 INTs

Litton's stat line vs. WKU (a much better team than Ohio) - 19-38 (50%) 230 yards 2 TDs and 2 INTs

Now, while Litton's stat line is not a good one and one of his worst games of the year, that stat line is much better than what Birdsong put up against the Bobcats.. Litton's game also looks even better when you take into account that Litton got ZERO run support yesterday afternoon. Our leading rusher had a whopping 7 yards against WKU, that allowed the Hilltoppers to not be concerned with the run and devote extra players into coverage or bring extra men on pressure blitzes.

Birdsong at Ohio DID have run support.. Devon Johnson rushed for nearly 200 yards that night, Ohio played to stop the run loading the box and leaving us with several one on one match-ups that Birdsong just couldn't take advantage of. With that said, both QB's poor games were not entirely on them.. In both contests our WRs got little to no separation on most plays and our Online had subpar outings (they've been pretty subpar ever since we lost Van-Horn honestly, whose loss in my opinion has been just as hard on this team if not more so than the loss of Devon Johnson)

We missed Tommy Shuler more than we missed Cato.. Litton played well enough most of the year to soften the Cato loss, but we never had that one WR that we could count on to come up with a catch when it was 3rd and 4.. Shuler was our consistency in the WR core and he also opened up lots of opportunities for the outside guys.. Opportunities they struggled to find without him.

The stats for Litton are his normal looking stat line, what games did they look much different

Well considering that in 6 of Litton's 10 starts he completed at least 60% of his passes and that in only 2 of his starts did he not throw more TDs than INTs (WKU and Kent State) I would say no, yesterday was not the normal stat line for Litton

Litton has put together the best statistical season of any freshman QB at Marshall. Anyone that does not think he is good just needs to stop posting.

He struggled in a game where he was getting rushed every play and had no run support. A game where there defense was sitting on all our routes and no one could get open.

Not saying he WILL be better but go compare Litton vs Cato or even Litton vs Pennington in their freshman seasons. Once again not saying he will end up being better but as a freshman he has been. He has more TDs, less INTs, and a higher efficiency rating in less games than those two did. He also has more completions.

His freshman season is also top 20 overall statistically in MU history.

Birdsong is terrible. He did the same thing here he did at JMU. He locks on. And it isn't by just looking down his target for a full route. At OHIO he would look to Foster presnap stay on him, turn his head to receive the snap, then snap right back to Foster. He did thia over and over and over again. He missed Devon wide open in the middle of the field several times and mossed Byrd in the red zone where he was wide open for TD all because he would not come off Foster.

Opening the QB competition again and allowing Birdsong to seriously challenge for the job would be beyond stupid.

Birdsong didn't try to use progressions. Litton did not have time to go through progressions yesterday. Both due to pressure and piss poor play calling.

not disagreeing with your overall assessment of litton, but two points:

a) we've had just 3 freshmen starting quarterbacks in the last 30 years or so prior to chase. his number were great, better than all of them, but he was also on a much better team than two of them (cato and cann).
b) to your second point about top 20 overall in mu history; until '84 we threw the ball 100-200 times all season, of course he'll have better numbers than that, it was an entirely different game for the first almost 100 years of herd football history.

How are you going to measure that?
Birdsong looked good all practice, then game 2 he began to really show regression. Not sure if his injury was to blame...it really could have been...
But the body of work Litton has already put into this season, would surely give him the decisive advantage.
