Yep....Keep them few & far between but I understand the kids feelings if they want to wear them often...I will never forget when Snyder broke out the green ones on ESPN & we destroyed Houston...Great night but not for Cougar player that broke his legI just hope they aren’t over worn
Perhaps, unless someone decides that it is time to bring back the Sonny Randle yellow/gold to the mix!Let the kids wear what they want. let them vote or whatever. The only rule being that all black is reserved for the anniversary game and MAYBE....MAYBE....any game where the division title/championship is on the line.
And for the record, I agree with the matte black, but I'm not complaining. Black helmets are here. My last wish list item is a Kelly green helmet with flecking in it so it shines like a jewel (taken from MUther). The 2009 Little Caesar's Bowl uniform was awesome. Green helmet, white jersey and green pants was fkn awesome!
That gives us black helmet, pants, and jersey... green helmet pants, and jersey....and white helmet, pants, and jersey. And we are done with the uniforms.
The only thing I have against the “M” is that it isn’t unique. Missouri and several other schools use the same type font as The Herd does. Even Michigan’s ‘M’ isn’t much different. Also - from a branding standpoint, the M with The Herd since it sits on the 50 yard line in the stadium, at center court in our basketball and other sports center reinforces our brand and makes us unique- there are no other Ms with The Herd other than Marshall.^ Respectfully disagree. The block "M" is more than enough to know it's Marshall on the field. Adding "The Herd" through the middle makes it too busy. Just my opinion.
Happens regularly that I wear one of my Marshall polo or Oxford shirts with the "M" on the pocket and people (especially those who aren't sports fans) ask "Is that for Michigan State?"The only thing I have against the “M” is that it isn’t unique. The one at the middle of the field is branding purposes but the helmet logo is its own. No one gets confused by the helmet logo. It’s unique.Happens regularly that I wear one of my Marshall polo or Oxford shirts with the "M" on the pocket and people (especially those who aren't sports fans) ask "Is that for Michigan State?"
I don't agree! If you want a wider perspective on this, read the book "The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding" by Al Rise and Jack Trout. I read that book years ago and it's what helped me formulate my views. The one at the middle of the field is branding purposes but the helmet logo is its own. No one gets confused by the helmet logo. Only so much you can do with the letter M.
That having said, the current stylized M is unique, even if in subtleties. The font was designed by a Marshal alum I think back when Dan Angel was University Pres? The previous block M we used definitely wasn't unique.
Here's an interesting view of this subject: https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-medi...l_progressive,q_80,w_800/18yjhqmrgek6wjpg.jpgHow come when logos are used to show schools, Marshall's is always the M with The Herd? That should be our logo period. Look at the helmets of Missouri, the alternative designs of Maryland and Memphis and even the designs of the Universities of Minnesota and Michigan (of course, Maryland has tons of different designs). All of these schools use M on their helmets (with small variations). Marshall's M with The Herd makes it much more visible and unique.
I do that. I'll see someone wearing a mono-color hat. Like an all black hat with a black M. I'll almost always think to myself, man that's a sweet Marshall hat. I want one." Only to later see it's a Michigan hat. Our M is different now, but back in the 90s and early 00s not so much.Happens regularly that I wear one of my Marshall polo or Oxford shirts with the "M" on the pocket and people (especially those who aren't sports fans) ask "Is that for Michigan State?"
What does Vanderbilt and numerous other schools who use black helmets do? They use their alternating colors on their black helmets! In the case of The Herd that would mean using green and white colors for the logo on the black helmets.Logos for fields and logos for TV graphics (i.e. Sports tickers or FoxBox) are much different than what is shown on camera in live action. The block "M" is easily identifiable. "The Herd" through it would be illegible and look like a streak through the M to tv viewers.
And what are you going to do for the black helmet? Run a black streak through the M on a black helmet? A white one? Ugh.
Can't speak for everybody but I love our all whites with green numbers! What does Vanderbilt and numerous other schools who use black helmets do? On a side note to all this, I just saw that Athlon Sports said Marshall's uniforms were one ranked of the 25 best-looking ones in all college football (ranked #22 on their list). Here's the link: https://athlonsports.com/college-fo...arshall_thunderingherd_entrance_2021_usatoday
This is simply not true. Our M is trademarked and unique to Marshall. The only thing I have against the “M” is that it isn’t unique. I just perused Marshall's "Brand Guide" and the only things that are shown as trademarked are a few variations of what is referred to as the Bar M logo. I looked at images of Marshall helmets that are available and did see a TM on one, but most of the ones for sale don't show this. This is simply not true. Our M is trademarked and unique to Marshall.
Maryland and Missouri have different M logos. The unique block M on our helmet is probably not trademarked for numerous reasons, but the basic design and the mid-field logo are trademarked.I just perused Marshall's "Brand Guide" and the only things that are shown as trademarked are a few variations of what is referred to as the Bar M logo. Yes - - they do (as do Minnesota, Michigan and others). The logo used on the football field and basketball courts doesn't appear to be trademarked. According to the Guide, only the M with Marshall on the horizontal strip is trademarked.Maryland and Missouri have different M logos. Since we own the trademark for the M with Marshall written through it, we can change what the words are inside the strip as we please. We don't really have to worry about getting another trademark because we hold the mark with slightly different words inside already. There's no real reason to TM THE HERD version of it.Yes - - they do (as do Minnesota, Michigan and others). The logo used on the football field and basketball courts doesn't appear to be trademarked. I like the cut of your jib, my good man.Black leather throwback helmets. I bet no one else would be wearing those. 😁
