Governor Bentley had to resign tonight. That's a shame. I wonder how and why that happened.
Background: while contemplating offering Brian Jenkins a head coaching contract at Alabama State University, two university board of trustees ("BOT") members and the university's president all were contacted on their personal cell phones by "The Architect." The information communicated to them was enough for any rational university administrator to not vote in favor of offering the coach a contract. The BOT members and president were warned by The Architect that voting in favor of the contract would severely jeopardize their position at the university. They all ended up voting in favor.
Shortly thereafter, information about NCAA investigations was leaked to an appropriate media outlet by The Architect. When the university president was asked if she knew of those allegations before her vote to offer the contract, she denied any knowledge of it. At that point, The Architect released recorded phone conversations with the president in which she is discussing the allegations before offering the coach a contract. Soon after, the trustee who first nominated the president to the position (and who took out a full page newspaper ad in support of her getting the position) went public claiming that she was a liar, not fit for the position, and that he was immediately asking for her resignation. She has since been fired.
One of the two Board of Trustees members who received the info, was extremely antagonistic about having received it, and voted in favor of the contract offer had to be dealt with. He inadvertently texted another man pictures of his naked junk late one night. With the pictures, he included the text of "Hi, I'm Herbert, and I am XX years old" (I'll have to go back and look to see his exact text). Knowing that he was married, the BOT member was told to resign or face the wrath of his sexual habits be exposed to the university. His wife left him as a result of his sexual escapades, and he was arrested for assaulting the former head football coach (who happens to be a good friend of The Architect).
In the meantime, Governor Bobby, one of 11 other members of the Alabama State University Board of Trustees, was contacted. Surely, Governor Bobby didn't want a colleague on the board who was sending pictures of his junk to random people. Governor Bobby's Chief legal counsel (a male) and the next legal in charge (at the time, a female) acted immediately to the information that The Architect sent to the Gov. Bentley's legal, in a conference call that included his Chief of Staff, the two attorneys, and The Architect, requested that the pictures not be sent to their emails since it would leave their server open to trouble if it amounted to a legal case. They then claimed that the Gov didn't want to become involved in the issue even though he was on the same board with the offender. Well, you should have just painted a big red X on his back in that case.
A few months later, the Governor was caught on phone recordings carrying on an affair with a top aide. His wife left him, and the Governor then made some fatal flaws, one of which was accosting his Chief of Staff (who had communicated with The Architect regarding the previous issue) and accusing her of setting him up.
The final BOT member who was warned not to vote in favor of the coaching contract had previously been removed from the board by the Gov for ethics issues. His sister-in-law and brother had received $30,000 in business from the university which the BOT member didn't report.
