Card Fan to the Joan

Before the season started I circled this game as the one travel game I attend each year. MU has won 4 straight against Louisville, but even with the outstanding home field advantage (over 90% wins) the Thundering Herd will have their hands full.

I have never been to a game at the Joan, but unlike how the fans treated us at WVU, the reports are that the Marshall faithful are welcoming and treat visitors well.

Have a couple of questions regarding game activities:

What are some of the parking options where tailgating is permitted?
Our seats are in section 103; are those bench seats?
I think I read that the Joan now permits beer sales? Is that correct?
Finally, we will have a few hours to kill before tailgating; what restaurants are recommended?

Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about little ole us, if we can't handle Akron, you don't have anything to worry about. I was hoping for a competitive game at least against the cards. Just my 2 cents.

Don't know tailgating, let others chime in here.

103 is bench seats
Yep on the beer.

Restaurants I would recommend are the Peddler, Backyard pizza, MU cafe or Le bistro all on third avenue between 8 and 10st. If you want something closer I would suggest mancinis across the street from the stadium or if you want some cheap quality/price food that is still good there is always fat pattys both of which are on 3rd avenue and 20th street... As for the beer sales they are only permitted on the home side (west side) stands. I recommend bringing in your own liquor like everyone else!

Come on over. No one will mistreat you. On fact, you'll probably be offered a beer or two. This ain't Morganhole.

Welcome to Huntington, thanks for coming and $pending your hard earned dollars.

Hall of Fame Cafe on 3rd across from The Holiday Inn good sports bar, food not so good.

W.V. Prime 4th Ave, good food, good ambiance, need to get a reservation just in case.

103 are bench seats. You can bring stadium seats or rent them for $8 I think. Beer sales are only permitted in the chairback sections on the west side of the stadium. No beer sales on your side.

Places to eat -

Downtown -
Backyard Pizza - 3rd Ave
MU Hall of Fame Cafe - 3rd Ave
La Famiglia on 6th Ave.
Jewel City Seafood on 4th Ave
Max and Ermas - Pullman Square
Roosters - Pullman Square
Fat Pattys - Close to the stadium - it will be packed.

Walk around downtown
Go by Ritter Park
Most of the tailgaters will welcome you with open arms and a cold beer. Safe travels and enjoy the romp. You guys are rolling!

BTW I have 1 extra free ticket in the visitors side, just off the 50 yard line row 16 , and I'm asking 50.00 for it in case any of your comrades are looking for a prime seat, and don't worry we are friendly fans.

I would recommend that you get to the tailgate at least 3 hours prior to kickoff. As others have stated, this is not Morgantown. You will be greeted and welcomed as if you were one of us.

I thoroughly enjoy playing Louisville, made the trip when we played you guys at Papa Johns and back in the day in the Motor City Bowl. When I visited Louisville we could not have been treated better. 4th street live was awesome!!

I'm so excited to host you all this weekend as I will enjoy mingling with the Louisville faithful and though I am hoping for a decent performance by the Herd, you guys are in route to a VERY possible National Championship run. I will be pulling for you for the remainder of the year.

Fat Patty's is a very gameday esk atmosphere.. If you get there around 4 you should be fine. I worked there while attending Marshall.

As far as tailgating options are considered I can recommend that you possibly park and mingle in the lot just outside of the stadium.. But if you want to set up shop the fire department on 20th Street is very close to the stadium and accepts donations in exchange for parking.. You will be blocked in so only park here if you plan on staying for the entire game and possibly a little later. Win or lose, we like to have fun and reminisce and so on..

Looking forward to this Saturday! Enjoy your visit and visit the crash site on your way in/memorial at Spring Hill Cemetery, etc. We're a football town and again, looking forward to having you in Huntington!

Go Herd!

Card Fan I have friends also coming in from Louisville (4) and I purchase their tickets several months ago. Since eating/tailgating locations have been discussed in previous posts let me discuss parking. In a word - nightmare! However, your best bet will be on the old ACF parking lot on Third Avenue adjacent to the stadium. You should not have a problem. No alcohol on that lot. Otherwise, it is every man, woman, and child to find parking as you will see. With the anticipated sell-out at JCE parking will be at a premium. With an 8PM Kickoff I would head towards the stadium no later than 4-5 to begin searching for parking space. Welcome to Marshall and to Huntington. As others stated this is not Morgantown and not WVU - we do not even come close to the behavior their fans exhibit. You will be welcome at any tailgate parties going on - just step up and say hi. Hope your experience here is enjoyable. Travel safe.

If you want to tailgate and still be close to the stadium come and tailgate where we do. It's on 3rd Ave behind the softball field close to stadium. Lot is 1st come 1st serve. And is $10 a spot. Plenty of space to spread out and tailgate. Takes me about 5 min to walk to stadium.

I also recommend Marshall Hall of Fame cafe. I think the food is decent. I think you guys have the same chain restaurant with your team as well?? Maybe same owners?

I never knew these spaces were available. How early would you suggest getting there to get a spot? It's directly behind the softball field?

Been there, Done that in the Pat White years(Morgantown); Lawless and scary fans(worse than UK, our Little Sister school). Never going back!

Been to the Chad and the Byron Bowls, you Guys seem just fine.

For family reasons, even though on my schedule, can't come. Good luck after the Cards.

Yep to all the comments about behavior. Visting fans are always treated with respect and friendship. This is not Morganhole. We are West Virginians.

As to tailgating, that is one of the largest differences between the urban setting of our stadium and most places. There is plenty of parking, but unlike most places, other than the home side lot right by the stadium, it is 10 spots behind this building, or 25 spots in front of this closed for the day business, and so on. Many of which are not visable from the street, you have to look for kids holding signs and waiving you down a side street. Plenty of spots on both sides of the stadium. The only tailgating unfriendly place is the "ACF lot" which is just beside the visiting side of the stadium. It is marked "no tailgating" but it is easy to miss the small sign until it is too late.

Anybody know who controls the old Glasser's lot now?

Not sure where the hate for parking is coming from. There are ample pay parking lots within 1-2 blocks of stadium, that should have availability as early as it sounds like they are talking about arriving. The lots across from the old steel mill on 3rd come to mind.

Also, cavalier meats is a hidden gem in my opinion. Maybe a block and a half walk to stadium, 10$, and it only sells out for the biggest crowds. It'd be on 21st and 2nd ave.
