Other thread got me thinking, so list of cars you’ve owned/memory test:

1972 Ford Pinto - bought 1981
1969 Cougar XR7 - 1982
1987 Ford EXP - 1987, first new car
1991 Nissan 300ZX - 1992
1997 Ford F150 - 1997
1999 BMW 540i - 1999
2002 Dodge Durango - 2003
2006 BMW M5 - 2008
2013 Ford Fusion - 2013
2023 Toyota Tacoma - 2023

Hopefully I’m done buying myself cars unless I buy a toy. That’s about $275,000 spent on cars over the years and that’s with buying several low mile used.

I’ve leased/rented a few cougars over the years.

2007: ???? Ford Taurus. Had it for 2 days. On the second day I was driving home from work, a belt snapped, the engine overheated, a piston head cracked, and it was no longer worth repairing.

2007-2012: 2001 (I think) Oldsmobile Alero. A panic buy because I needed a car when the Taurus shit out. When I moved to CA my company wanted to spend $1500 to ship it across the country. I said no, just give me $1000, I’ll buy a new car when I get there. They said no, it doesn’t work that way, and paid $500 extra to ship the piece of shit to me, along with the rental while I waited. One day I went to turn it on, it wouldn’t, so I checked the battery, it was good, so I sold it for scrap.

2013-2020: 2012 Suzuki SX4. Got a good deal because the CVT scared people off. Despite my terrible lack of maintenance the thing kept running. I decided to get a new car when the black smoke coming out the back became extra noticable.

2020-present: 2019 Nissan Leaf, because I’m better than you (actually because I’m worse than you at remembering to change oil and EVs don’t have oil)

1999: 1991 Nissan Maxima, took it to 200k miles and it died
2002: 1996 Honda accord. I wrecked it in a minor collision but it was never the same. Overheating issues.
2007: Nissan Sentra. Took it to around 120k and I can’t remember why but it needed 1000k in repairs and wasn’t worth it.
2010ish: Mazda 3. Loved it but had kids and needed something bigger
2018: I alternate a 2019 Pilot and a 2018 Odyssey to this day.

=•=

I was going to get a new Lexus GX but they’re way too expensive. Going to ride out the Hondas a while longer.

From a V10 super sedan to a Ford Fusion. This is how you know someone discovered that the BMW V10 is a nightmare lol. I recall you had the SMG transmission? Double trouble. But damn that engine sounds like an F1 car with the right exhaust.
I bought the car with 18,000 miles on it. Previous owner was golfer Ian Poulter, still had his home address and all the golf courses around that area in the nav system. Had it about for a year and the oil pump failed. The car was out of warranty on age but not on miles, BMW agreed to pay for the parts but not labor. So I had to pay half of the $5,000 repair.

Car was a beast though. Rev limit of 158 and I saw that on Rt 7 heading toward Marietta. Hit that in 5th and had 2 gears left. I bet that car would have hit 185 without the governor.

Yes, I remember when you bought it.

The forums are filled with tales of great tribulations with that model lol. Meanwhile old BMW straight sixes are running around with 300k on them. I guess there's a lot to be said for simplicity...but simplicity didn't sound like a F1 car.

1984 Chevy S10. Absolutely zero options besides an AM radio. 4 speed.

1987 Mercury Lynx XR-3. Basically an Escort GT. 5 speed. Drove the piss out of it. Fell asleep behind the wheel and ran it into a big ass boulder.

1986 Ford Escort Pony. Also no options, four speed. Could get 45 mpg on the highway.

1986 Honda Civic. Great car.

1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, 5 speed. Loved that car.

1989 Nissan Maxima, 5 speed. Great car.

1995 Ford Contour SE, 5 speed. Every option, fun to drive, thought of it as a "baby SHO" and it drove like one, but a piece of shit straight from the factory.

2000 Olds Bravada. Nice rig, surprisingly capable off-road with AT tires.

1976 GMC 4x4. Four speed. Dual gas tanks, and needed them lol.

2004 Ford Explorer. Also put AT tires on it, went places it shouldn't have.

2004 Mazda 3 2.3 hatch, 5 speed. Fun car.

2002 Mustang GT, 5 speed.

2012 Hyundai Elantra.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander. Bought it dirt cheap, best beater I ever had before electrical gremlins began. Also took it stupid places.

2018 Kia Sportage. Every option. Another very nice vehicle that was a piece of shit, notorious Theta engine oil consumption issues began at 80k miles, filled it with oil and drove straight to the dealer to trade it in.

2018 Mazda 3 hatch, 2.5 6 speed. Current car. Every option, love the adaptive cruise, a real game changer on very long trips. Will likely trade it for a truck in a year or two, just put new tires on it and a new battery in December or would have already traded it, need something tougher for all the gravel roads out here, otherwise a terrific driving car.

YES!

I don't care much about cars and don't know much about them, but the adaptive cruise is great on trips. Give me that, apple car play, leather seats, and remote start and I'm good. Surprisingly all those things are on most mid-level trims now it seems.

Which one, the Elantra? 🤣 A perfectly fine, efficient commuter.
i forgot a couple from my earlier years when i was on about a 4 year binge, i.e. early 90's. had a datsun car that i ran the ever loving hell out of. missed the 88 300Z, too. one of the toughest pieces of shit i had, though, was a renault alliance. good lord, that poor car took a thrashing. i purposely side-swiped a guard rail once and it caught and ripped a piece of sheet metal out of the side. had my uncle with me and he calmly looks over and says, "yore one crazy sumbitch, my bro-in-law should've pulled out".

i put pipe bumpers on the the 78 1/2 f150. hit a 55 gallon drum at about 30 mph once and it launched like kicking a field goal. run through a corn field with it once, something every young hell raiser should experience. it's fun as hell until ya pop out and there's a wagon sitting in the way.

hillbilly chronicles . . .

Man, I did so much dumb shit to that S-10. Only repair it ever needed was a rebuild on the carburetor. Which is amazing because it was a three year assault of speeding on trails, jumping shit, rolling backwards downhill and then dropping the clutch, etc. One time I drove it up this big grass covered hill, came over the other side about 30 mph to discover the sun hadn't yet burned off the dew over there, spun a half dozen times on the way down, and somehow managed to get it straight and stopped before plowing sideways into the woods. Fun times....also how I learned slow and steady is the right way to off-road lol.

another sign of liberalism, lol. kidding, you learn that shit as you get older. it's amazing what we use to do to our vehicles with no fear of breaking anything, and now, i'm afraid to put a scratch on them. fear of breaking something wasn't even close to being in the realm of possible thought 25 years ago. had a blast back to the past a couple weekends ago when i found out the new silveraydo will turn donuts just as easy as the 21 camaro. lol
