Columbus, Ohio is going to have to change its name

The significance of Columbus is undeniable. His accidental discovery changed the entire dynamics of world. The Columbian Exchange brought a transfer of wealth, religion, culture, population, technology, and disease like the world had never witnessed before. I’ll even give him a pass on the brutality part and chalk it up to different times and worldview. But for the life of me I don’t understand why we celebrate him and name things after him to the degree we have done in the US. The man never stepped foot in the our country. His voyages took him throughout the Caribbean, but not once did he step on present US soil. His colonization of many islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas was no different than the deeds of Cortez or Pizarro, except for being first. We need to study him in our history books, but quit pretending that he’s a symbol of our country.

same thing could be said about Santa Claus, or even the Easter bunny as well. Time to get rid of both of them? What about the fairy that supposedly stops by in the middle of the night that takes away a tooth? Symbolism is just a horrible thing. Let's all do our part and be good socialists.

Except for the part where Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny aren’t real. Your example isn’t a good one. And not once did I say symbolism is horrible. The point is we’ve adopted a symbol of someone that never stepped foot here. He colonized and changed the entire culture of the Caribbean...not the US.

I really think you’re trying too hard on this one. I’ve acknowledged the significance of Columbus. I even explained away the brutality part. He just didn’t play a significant role in the colonization and formation of our own country. Why would we have a national holiday for him anymore than having a Cortez Day?

are you not offended by all the crosses we have to see throughout the landscape? You know many people were brutalized on those crosses? That would equate to having to look at nooses hanging from trees wherever you were to drive. Can we take down/remove all these crosses? Many people died on the cross, just as they've done at the end of a noose. I'm definitely offended by the cross. Or, are you one of those people who accept crosses, due to supposedly a dark skinned guy being murdered on one over 2020 years ago, and somehow coming back to life a day or so later?

Huh?

exactly. it's all stupid, and this shit needs to be checked at the door, and soon. Thankfully, we have a President who won't stand for this nonsense. You get Biden in there, and somehow democrats control both chambers, and this country is finished. We're on life support currently, but Trump winning in November is our only hope for saving it.

We can't name things after people who were part of the colonization. You should know that. We are going to have to change those names as well. Why? Slavery, were bad to the Indians, and Jefferson was dipping his pen in the company ink.

So, who do we name things after? All of it is going to have to be changed.

This conversation reminds me of the nonsense joke I heard when I was a kid...

Teller of joke: If you were floating down the river on a concrete slab, how many windows does the basement of the Empire State Building have?

Answerer of joke: None. The basement of the Empire State Building doesn’t have windows.

Teller of joke: You dummy. Motorcycles don’t have doors.

This is what this discussion feels like to me. Maybe you’ll make more sense to me when your cooler casts a longer shadow across your porch. I’m playing 18 today. I’ll check back after I spend an hour in the clubhouse after my round to see if it’s more lucid. Maybe it’s me.

of course it doesn't make sense to you. you're a liberal, and if somebody has a different opinion than you, you take the easy street and label them a racist. wait and see how much you enjoy your life when the cops take a knee. i'll be hoping the thug takes all your shit, screws your dog, and punches you in the nuts.

White Privilege.

I’m not arguing that at all. In fact I’m not really arguing at all. I’m saying Columbus isn’t a great symbol for celebrating our country because he has very little to do with it outside of opening the door for other explorers and colonizers. There are better candidates. I know you’re trying to be outraged here, but I’m simply making an historic observation. And please don’t start anything on Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. The Tooth Fairy is cool though. He sells those things for a profit. He’s a capitalist just like Columbus.

Anyway...I think Columbus was an important historical figure that changed the world, but had very little to do directly with our country. He ranks right up there with Santa Claus.

But for the life of me I don’t understand why we celebrate him and name things after him to the degree we have done in the US.

Lets not stop with holidays and celebrating historical people.

It's just like the name "Raleigh". WTF do cities, towns, counties, have names of people who never did a damn thing for this country? Sir Walter Raleigh never did a damn thing for this (colony) state or city. Plus, he was white. Time to remove it.

It's time to take to the streets to do away with all these names of people who had even less historical significance on the world than columbus!!!!

I think we should pass a law where only comic book and cartoon characters, and other fictional stuff can be used to name things.

Examples:
Olive Hill Ky should have first dibs on Olive Oyl.
My town should have first dibs on Wayne's World.
Crum WV could change one letter and be compliant. Crom.
Canaan Valley?....Conan Valley
Kermit WV is already compliant. Adding "the Frog" would be a nice touch.

Nearly all of the Columbus statues were put up by Italian agencies to welcome new Italian immigrants.

Seems pretty racist and anti-immigrant to tear them down.

And Columbus visited Puerto Rico, so technically he did step foot in the United States.

Gen "Mad Anthony" Wayne was a ruthless warrior and was not so kind to the Indians. He was also granted a rice plantation for his service in the US Army after the Revolution. It was in Georgia. You know what rice plantations in Georgia did and how they were managed.

The Wayne Pioneers(Pioneers took Indian Land) will now be now know as Obamaville. The Obamaville Kenyans.
