Contact Sports in NC(North Carolina)

So, does our August game at ECU get cancelled? Moved back a week, perhaps, to early September.

If cancelled early enough, can Hamrick find another game? Perhaps "buying" a game at the Joan with a FCS opponent for the first week in Sept., or last Sat. in August.

As old Ernie Salvatore would say, "Staaaaaaaay Tuned"!!

I don’t believe this recommendation applies to collegiate athletics, only youth and high school activities.

The virus has given the folks that don't like contact sports the opportunity to call for flag football or whatever. I think America is hooked on the current brand of tackle football and will not buy into anything less. The concussion problem is being addressed, and that seems to me to be the biggest concern about collision football that is now played at all levels.

As I predicted here years ago robots will eventually replace humans on the football field. The three elements of football that fans demand, alcohol, violence, and gambling, will continue unabated without the fear of tragic injury or death.

Why would they do that? Move it back or switch venues? What you can get the virus in Aug, but not September? You can get the virus in NC, but not if you play in WV?

You have to feel for the HS student athletes in this instance. How do you recruit a player out of HS that has not seen the field in a year and half? Are you going to still recruit him? Take a chance on a kid who may be out of game shape, or shape in general?

I don't think high school sports in NC will be played this fall. I have also heard the universities are very concerned about that possibility. But, I think they are under immense pressure to find a way to play.

ECU is in terrible financial straits. They will do all possible to play the season

But, but, but, ECU is in THE AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!! The awesome super-conference, self-proclaimed as the equal of the SEC, ACC, Big 10, et al. The unbelievable mega league where going undefeated versus its ultra programs make a commuter college in no-coast Florida the national champions, better than Alabama.

You are acting like IT!!!!!!!! is a path to financial ruin? That ECU is in bad shape? That 99.9% of NC cares about the ACC and the ACC only?

Nah.

Next thing you will try to tell me is that an team in one of the wealthiest states, and named for it, say Connecticut, has lost so many $$ in the money pit that is the AAC that it paid millions to get out, with no real plan for football beyond playing Liberty and BYU?

Nah.

THE AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!

They have the smallest budget in the AAC by quite a bit with the exception of Temple. They fought to get in and I believe that their ability to consistently put over 45k butts in the seats for football that got them in. They can't keep up in that league. BWT, look at Iowas State. With the millions they have from the Big XII, they too are in trouble having had to make drastic cuts much like wvu as well.

They are, but they are probably in better shape long term than Marshall. ECU won't make the decision to play or not. That will come from above them as will all the schools. I hear that is not given that the NC schools at any level or conference will play. They better hope there is enough influence or pressure of Roy Cooper to allow it. Remember where he is taking his marching orders from(cough , cough). In addition, there are enough liberal fruit cakes around Chapel Hill and the rest of the Triangle to influence a decision not to play. Same in Virginia. And, that includes two members of the ACC and ODU. Have a friend that is pretty well connected in state govt at hight level and it is not a give college football will be played in NC.

Right now, today, I doubt Duke plays this season. But things change quickly.

Lack of consistent start times in all states, or in all of NCAA FBS, FCS football, then could very well see scenarios where a state like NC won't allow football to start in August, in early September, mid September, etc. But say WV DOES allow football, high school and college, to start in late August. Therefore, MU COULD play in the ECU game, but NOT in NC. Would ECU be willing to shift the game to Huntington? If not, then MU shouldn't be bound by what the state of NC does.

So, why wouldn't Mike Hamrick be free to try and find a replacement game, either in Huntington or another State where college football games can go on in late August or the first Saturday in Sept?

Its not whether you can potentially catch the virus in one state but not in another, but whether one state makes a decision to allow games be played as of a certain date, say WV, while another state, say NC, does not. In the absence of a uniform "start" date nationwide, this is a likely scenario we might see.

I would assume that if NC doesn't allow football games that they mean practice as well. If that is the case ECU would NOT have a team to play Marshall

I find it hard to believe that one state can make a decision that will almost destroy a conference's ability to have a football season. I predict cooler heads will prevail and both VA and NC will allow football at all levels to commence in September. America will be so ready for football by then that the public outcry will outweigh what the politicians can decry. It is being publicized more lately that the chances of catching the virus outdoors is very remote. Hopefully, that message will influence the decision makers.

It is very much political now. Just see the tweets today between someone and the governor of NC. There is a big convention tha is suppossed to bein Charlotte , NC in August. You don't think the governor of NC has marching orders about that thing?

Rigth now more than half of the ACC is in jeopardy of not playing. I bet Dabo Sweeny needs a straight jacket.

I heard there is a very distinct possiblity that football of any level including college will not be played in NC this fall.

The season is three months away. Let's hope plans are being made to have a season, with many contingencies built in. A lot can change in 3 months.

It will be interesting to see how many transfers will come about because of this. If a kid has a degree already and is in a state like Michigan or North Carolina, I’d bail now and find a school that will be playing this coming year.
