I struggle with that and I was a kid who laid in bed with the radio on when the Reds made their west coast swings in the 70s. I would keep box scores in a notebook. In other words, a huge fan.
He was a great defensive shortstop and a smart player, but offensively...meh. I think his value came through association. With the offense the team had it covered his lack of ability at the plate. He only had one job and did it well, but that doesn't make him HOF material.

Yeah, but Ozzie could do some back flips, and dance a lot better than Davie. Plus, he was awesome during his tme with Black Sabbath.
