What a great season for The Herd - Conference Tourney Champs, first NCAA in 30 years, first NCAA win in program history. That being said...

The team that won last night was the best team on the court. The physical nature of the way that WVU plays certainly took its toll from about the 10-minute mark. Losing Jansson had a big impact on the game as he is a corner 3 specialist that would have been very helpful in early offense once we beat the press (which I thought we handled relatively well).

Reality is, we were flat out under-manned last night. That is mostly a WVU thing, but also a little bit of a monster of our own creating. Beating Wichita required a monumental effort - and we realistically only played a total of 7 players in that game (as usual) - with Watson and George playing about 15-minutes each. I know they're young kids, but to turn around and expect them to replicate that same level of performance against an even bigger, stronger, and more aggressive team is a really tall order. We suffered the fate of MANY mid-major programs that pull off a 1st-round upset only to be greeted by a top-5 seed from a power conference school. I hate it that it was WVU, but if it were a school like Texas Tech, Kentucky, Purdue, Kansas, or Syracuse, the reality is that our fanbase would feel different (me included - we all hate losing to the Eers).

Would Levi Cook and/or Iran Bennett have helped - most definitely... assuming they made it into the rotation. If were only going to go 2-deep off of the bench - it almost doesnt matter. WVU is now considered one of the top 4 seeds remaining in the tournament according to ESPN analysts and the played like that last night. Congrats to The Herd for a great season that we will hopefully look back on as a "new day" for the program. My son and I were able to go to both games. One of the best things about this team is the quality of the character of the kids... we got to meet the team and get to know the players and staff - proud to have them represent Marshall University!

Just an opinion but people need to stop saying next season could be magical. THIS season was magical. It's very hard to get to the tourney, let alone win in it. Don't look past that, don't let this be the only mark of a good season either in the future. Enjoy it, celebrate it and whatever happens next year will happen. STOP IMMEDIATELY AND ENJOY THIS YEAR, history say's it may not happen again for a long, long time.

Ot Elmore 3 fouls and a technical in 1 minute of game time. I motion that from this day forward that March 19th be recognized as Ot Elmore Day!
Ot got up off the bench turned to a teammate and said hold my beer and watch this!
Ot that buddy in high school that you never had to worry if he would be by your side when things got real, also the same buddy you knew better than to leave your girlfriend alone with!
Next season Dan is gonna hold up the National Championship Trophy and proclaim this one is for Ot!
Amazing and historic season! Can't wait for the next one to get here!

Overall, I could not be much more pleased with how this season played out. These guys gave us everything they had, and that is all we can ask as fans.

Two things we need for next year, and I have been saying this for four months now, are another big and a depth guard.

1. A true big man – I love Penava, his game is an NBA-style stretch game that fits what we do, but sometimes you need a big ole space eater. Konate took our lunch money last night altering shots and rebounding while commanding a lot of space near the rim. Hopefully, Iran Bennett can give us that presence next year when we play against true centers.

2. A depth guard – Burks and Elmore play more minutes than any guard tandem in the country. We need a solid depth player to spell them off the bench. I think both Burks and Elmore would be even more effective (especially during quick turnarounds in tournament play) if they were getting 30 and 34 minutes respectively rather than 35 and 39. A good ball handler that can step in and give the team 10-14 quality minutes a night would be a big asset.

I think we have that on the roster with West. He's actually a better ball handler than CJ, IMHO.

The key is we need a three/four to allow West to be our primary backup at guard and the emergence of George and Williams plus the addition of Bennett should allow for that.

This would be a heck of a rotation:
1- Elmore/West
2- Burks/West/Watson
3- Williams/George/Watson
4- Penava/Williams/George
5- Bennett/Cook/Penava

That's an easy nine deep with a ton of possible combos for Dan.

.....................Do not forget - there are (3?) other recruits/transfers that are not being mentioned! The one I keep thinking could help at the guard position is Cam Brooks out of Zanesville OH. He is really skinny, but has a good skill set. So looking forward to greeting the newcomers!! Go HERD !

Great year. I lived to see us win an NCAA game! I am going out to the airport (I only live three minutes away) to welcome them home. Supposed to land about 3 p.m.

Im sorry but after watch Penava live, no way he plays in the NBA. Dude moves like a snail and is very weak with the ball.

After seeing us play this weekend, we will need to get more Athletic and Physical in the Front Court. We really need Ezzadine.

We need bigger quicker players. Dan said we were not playing hard enough in the first half and that puzzles me. Elmore had a horrible game. He had so many turnovers
Great guards don't have that many turnovers in one half. Burks didn't show up

Honestly Trae young was a turnover machine when he played us, other teams as well. Sometimes kids just have an off night and don't match up well against certain teams anyway. Dude can hit some deep threes tho.

Honestly it was great winning the CUSA tournament and then winning a first round game in the NCAA tournament was fantastic. I’ll admit the stomping at the hands of WVU dampened my spirit a bit, but now that a day has passed I’m seeing that we did accomplish a lot this year and we should be proud!!

Congrats on a great season, especially the big win over Wichita State. Your program is certainly headed in the right direction. I wasn't able to make it to the game but I had a friend who was there that said you had great representation in San Diego.

Of the 8 teams, the Marshall section was the most represented and the loudest. College of Charleston, Wichita State, NM State, and Clemson all had decent sized crowds

He has enough skill to play in the NBA. He's just way too weak right now. Think about how bad he was his freshman year. Think about the jump he made from last year to this year. If that happens again he may get a look.

You cant teach speed and quickness, 2 Things Peneva does not have. He just operates so slow up and down the court.

I've learned never to say never - Hassan Whiteside was too lanky to play in the NBA when he left Marshall (albeit after a Freshman year), but look at him now.

Too Lanky?? Nobody ever said that. Too Immature was the knock on him. A more mature attitude and Whiteside goes in the lottery.

Penava is too slow footed, too weak, and not strong with the ball in his hands at all.

You can 100% improve on speed and quickness. Silly to suggest otherwise.

Anyways, I don't think anyone suggested Adjin is going to play in the NBA as things currently stand. @RhinoD simply made the observation that Penava has an NBA type game (for a big man), which is accurate.

You dont have to be sorry. You’re allowed to have an opinion.

I just think you’re being overly negative about Penava. Yes he could be tougher and more athletic but the kid is a damn good college basketball player and played well last night against the best and most physical opponent we’ve played all year.

Ill give Penava this, he plays with heart and tries to go above and beyond his athletic limitations, but his athletic ability limits him. One thing that is frustrating is sometimes he plays up his weaknesses instead of his strengths. He spends too much time trying to be a ball handler in the open court instead of establishing post positioning.

Peneva could make a decent to hell of a living in Europe though

A team might give him a look in the g-league and see if they can develope him. He will definitely have options internationally and might be where he ends up. I'm just excited to see how much he improves during this off season for us.

Congratulations to Marshall on a great run this basketball season. WVU fans are proud of you, as is all of West Virginia. Keep up the hard work. We want to see you in the NCAA’s again next year, and every year after that. :)

Whiteside was 235lbs when he played at Marshall, which is very thin for a seven-footer, and he was frequently criticized by NBA scouts during the draft process as needing to put on weight to compete in the NBA. Today he weighs 265lbs.

Whiteside has size and Elmore doesn't. Terrible comparison. What Elmore does have is a lot better attitude than whiteside did when Whiteside left Marshall.

Peneva bringing the ball up seemed good but we fell into a trap. They didn't want Elmore bringing the ball up the court and getting into our offense. Last thing is Elmore when he did have the ball stolen didn't get back with a lot of hustle. Elmore had to have been tired. Carter did a job on him.
