I'm in Lexington and someone saw my MU shirt and told me that they had heard that Dantoni was retiring. They asked me if that was so. I told them that havent heard anything about it. This person knows a coach here in Lex and heard it from him. Anybody know anything about this?

Wouldn’t be surprised. The stars are aligned against him with his hillbilly ball and Baltic state recruits imploding, and a new president/AD. He knows his time has come and gone And would rather go out with some dignity.

Umm. Don't you know Dan gets the recruits for his system. The recruits other teams go after and find success with don’t fit Dan's system.
The latest recruits aren't exactly fitting his system. On another note....Kinsey has an extra covid year. Is there any possibility he stays around for a 5th year?

I don't know. You'd think his draft stock is tanking. He may come back in hopes of rectifying this season.

Retiring beats firing. This season continues on its current path, then somebody with the authority, be it Smith, O'Malley, a new AD, etc., needs to let DD know that those are the two choices, . . . the ONLY two choices. And give him the right to select which choice he prefers! Ultimate decision needs to be done ASAP right after our exit from the CUSA tourney, if we are even able to make it to the tourney (Do all teams still go to Frisco, or does the cellar dweller stay home?).

He would have been better off transferring after last season. If he wants a shot in the nba, no way he stays another year. A lot of teams would showcase his talents better than we are/could.
I just worry with the way this season has and appears to be playing out he has dropped out of the draft.

Oh, I agree. After our first few games, I said the same thing. He wasn’t developed enough after last year… and this year is just letting the air out of his tires. DD doesn’t even have any plays showcasing his athleticism, like he did with even Stevie from the corner to alley op.
It’s like Dan is letting every player just play iso ball.

I say go out now if I was DD. You leave now with your head held high about winning a game in the tourney. This year is going into the dumpster with a well below .500 record. Nobody really coming in major to help next year and you have to believe a few will leave, so probably another sub .500 next year too. I say go out this year with your head held high and still beloved. Another one of these years and your legacy becomes stained.

I think he will go one more season, and hope to retire with a winning record for his last year.

If he wins CoY, he'll be fired.
Might as well stay consistent in sports and the level of expectations.
With that said, since he won't win it, looks like we'll be stuck with him another season.

From the FWiW Department, on today's Coach's radio show, Danny D. touched on a few of the above topics. Says he hopes Taevion gets drafted in the NBA draft but that he could come back to MU for another year. Said he would certainly miss George and Byers next year, apparently indicating they will NOT be part of the 2022-23 team.

When questioned about his recruits, Danny discussed the 2 signees, a tall guard from Ohio whom Danny indicated could play the point guard position and the 7 footer from North Carolina, whom Coach said was one of the top 20 something players coming out of North Carolina HS ball this year. Caveat is that both players, per Coach, need to work on their strength, getting stronger, etc. Given the history under D'Antoni where incoming 98-pound weaking incoming players tend to stay that way while with the HERD, that may be a Red Flag. There were a couple exceptions in the last 8 season, like, Iran Bennett and David Early currently. But for most of the rest of Danny's recruits, the MU strength and conditioning program obviously wasn't a HIGH priority and might as well have been located on the Moon!!

So he will be back next year. I assume for his final go around. He mentioned possibly bringing in another guard as well - portal. We'll see.

Looked at three mock drafts this morning... One has Kinsey at the end of the first round, one has him as the first pick of the second round, and one has him late in the second round.

NBA teams draft talent and potential and for the most part don't give two cares about how a players college team performs. Kinsey has the athleticism and offensive potential to be a pro. As a guy who watches a ton of NBA basketball, I personally think his ceiling is being a bench scorer/situational player (not that there is anything wrong with that). The key for him is going to be improving his 3-point shot, which is now the centerpiece of every NBA offense.

As a side note, he probably should have went pro after last season... NBAdraft.net had him going 15th in last year's class and now have him going 31st in this year's class.

DD should have the simple decency to “retire”.

As MU will not have an AD by March 9th (the day DD will lose in the play in round of the CUSA tournament) this will be an early test of the new overall leadership. There is no real reason to believe that this awful performance will not be repeated next year. Time to clean house. HC, all assistants, as many players as can be run off.

And the ridiculous 1960s throw back uniforms and court. We have to repaint anyway for the SBC.

He's not going to. He's blaming this year on youth and he's already talking about his off season plans to bring in a transfer or two in hopes of sparking next year's team. Unless provoked Dan will coach another 2-3 years.

During the broadcast last night they said 3 NBA scouts were in attendance.

If one believes (I do not) that there is an NBA level player on this team, then the outrage at the gross failure that this season is should be all the more.
There were two teams playing. MTSU has some athletic kids with big, long body's.

I know. I just don’t think the new AD will pull trigger on a new coach. He’ll give DD another year.

If thats the case, then I already have zero confidence.
No hard feelings DD...but you aren't getting MU to the level it needs to be.
LSU fired Orgeron what...2 years after winning the NC?
I expect, and won't get, (because MU fans aren't consistent) they to hold the basketball team to a higher standard than it currently is...hold all sports to such standards.

"But Dan...he's from MU...he's so gosh darn charming...and the throwbacks remind me of the 'good 'ol days of WV, where rap music didn't exist and young people didn't talk back to their elders."
I hope the new AD looks at Dan and doesn't even speak, with a look that Dan knows what he's saying.
...and we move on.

What makes it worse is that Kinsey (at least before this season) was considered a 1st Round talent by NBA scouts. Yet here we are...

Man, you have some real issues with older people. Lol!
It’s a sad situation. Everyone knows we need to move on but I doubt the new AD will make that move . Maybe he will. It will take some balls.

IMO NBA “potential” currently does not necessarily equate to production at the college level and or wins necessarily. It’s something I don’t understand.

If that was the case. He would have been gone already.

If he was considered 1st round material. Why didn't he jump last year? Why risk getting hurt or having stock fall.

Because he probably wasn't

Thanks for the insight chuck. I can’t wait to read your retelling of this thread in tomorrows paper

Nothing wrong with rap music not existing in the state it currently sits and absolutely nothing wrong with respecting elders. You sound like you need a swift kick in the nuts. That said, our best hope is retirement. We will be better in the next few years. They are young, despite what some may say. They won’t be where the program is capable of being though.
