Defensive Staff Gone

Hate to see Price go, if true. In the presser he made it sound like all the coaches would get interviews. Maybe they wanted to move on. Maybe to Purdue.

There are no on field coaching jobs available at Purdue. Lambert was there last hire. They were hoping to be retained. It’s a tough business.

When you're an assistant coach, you should always be looking for your next landing spot, because coaching can be a brutal business. Many of the staff members have been here for a while and may have gotten comfortable because of Doc's perceived security. Also, other programs weren't poaching the staff, which could also say something. Bottom line, as my grandmother used to tell me, "It's a poor rat that only has one hole."

Price is out, he’s already tweeted out his resume, essentially.

Not so sure I totally agree with your assessment. Bastien and Haskins were in there first year here. Segler was in his second year. Cramsey and Adkins were in year three. Brown and Baker completed four years. Price was here the longest with nine years on staff. Our staff has been poached over the years. Mirabel to Oregon, Fuller to Memphis, Heater to Maryland, Treier to Florida State, Goebbel to NC State, Barclay to Western Kentucky come to mind. Also, I’m sure Lambert would of still left for Purdue if Doc had been renewed.

Price and Brown, who coached our D ends, I believe, were both Big Time players at VA Tech. With their backgrounds, they should be able to land decent jobs somewhere. Its a business as has been noted. Best of luck to all of them in their future jobs and thanks for your service at Marshall!

he specifically stated he owed them interviews. that's not much time to do several interviews and make a decision.

I'm fine with him starting new and getting his own hires but it does seem strange to say that and let the entire staff go hours later.

Agree. But what is said isn’t always the 100% truth. I’m sure he has a handful of guys he wants to bring in and has already gotten the “let’s go!” from them. The interview might not have been an interview for them to keep their current position. The extent of his interview with some might have been:

-Are you willing to coach another position on my staff because I already have a guy to coach what you coach.
-No?
-Ok, I think it’s best we move on.

or

-Your recruiting connections are in an area of the country where some guys I’m bringing in already have a firm handle on. I think you’re a great coach, but we need some guys who can target other areas. I’m sure you understand.

Being an assistant coach is tough. These guys get tossed around from program to program, used as meat shields for head coaches every now and again along the way, and then getting left out in the cold when the guy they work for suddenly gets fired. Opportunities are usually created by some other guy getting the shaft.

It's why every position coach we hire breaks down into tears during the press conference when we name him head coach. It's like winning the lottery, finally getting an opportunity to be the guy handing out the shafts.
