Didn't see this coming!

This is mainly for recruiting purposes, I'm willing to bet the farm. He'll leave when he decides to, 5 year, 10 year, 20 year contract notwithstanding!! So as long as he's there he can "assure" his recruits of his "commitment" to FAU!!

He will still be gone in the next year or two. Smart of FAU to do this and could set a big buyout clause.

I think you're going to see a big bump in former P5 coaches in CUSA and the G5.

It seems that the new trend is literally, tossing tens of millions of dollars for coaches to get to the CFP. Out of, what, 58 coaches, only 4 get in? That means about10-15 of them are going to be canned for an 8-5 season (see Kevin Sumlin) given enough money to retire by (see Jimbo Fisher) and expected to get to the CFP despite going 6-6.
You're then going to have schools basically hire PI's to find dirt on you so in case you go 8-5 or 9-4, they can find ways to fire you and not pay you.

I imagine many coaches are gonna catch on and say, "screw that!" They will then go to a place like FAU, who has ZERO expectations, pay you decent money, and you can lose 3-4 games a season and still be considered successful.
Some, will move on, but go to places where the pressure to win isn't so damn insurmountable that they can be paid and still coach.
If they choose not to, they get locked in for 10 years, make good money, and can afford a losing season here and there.

Key quote from the article is "I can go wherever I want and not too many people recognize me". Exactly.

First, FAU is pledging money it just does not have, nor is it likely to generate even if it does extraordinary things. Directional Florida football is fan-free football, and always will be.

Second, this allows Lame to lie to recruits and tell them he will be there. He will not. He will be in the ACC or SEC this time next year.

Third, Lame is not Satan. He is not an evil person, FAU gave him a shot and this is his way of saying thanks. When (not if) he moves on, the SEC or ACC team that picks him up will have to pay FAU a huge buy out, from which it can run its program for several years.

Good points.

FAU is fan-free, but they have a huge student population and can generate money by raising the student fees, which already funds the football program. They could raise students fees by $100 per year and that would raise an additional $5M for the athletic department. We do that and we add about $1M.
