As we speak, Marshall is considering backing out of the bowl game. The decision may already be made.

Not playing in this bowl game will be one of the biggest public relations mistakes in University history.

We have justification for playing and getting beat but if we skip out, half the nation will question why and wonder what’s wrong at Marshall University. The sympathy we get and those questioning the portal process will pale in comparison to the storyline around not renewing Huff and all our players transferring.

The injury excuse is a poor one. Our backups play against our starters day in and day out. They are conditioned and ready.

Playing shows heart and the media will key in on that. Not playing ultimately sets us up to look like quitters.

So run down a list of available players by position for me since you know playing is the right move. How deep do we go before we have to play a TE at left guard, for example? How about a walk-on freshman LB having to navigate the cut blocks of senior OL for Army? If one gets his knees shredded is that just the price to pay for your honor?

Why don’t you let the people with actual information make the decision? We know from just announced portal entries we have around 50 scholarship players. Many are freshmen that have been redshirting. So, at best, we have a roster smaller than an NFL roster that is almost empty at some position groups.

It sucks, but you can’t let vanity rule the decision process over player safety.

Good thing Coach Gibson likes the 3-3-5 defense because we probably only have 3 defensive lineman left.

I guess the Gardner Webbs of the world should stop playing the Alabamas.

You just watch how half the media spins this then let's talk about vanity.

Rumors are that Huff started encouraging the players to transfer out after the JMU game and some of Huff's holdover assistant coaches are currently encouraging players to leave Marshall. If this is true, Huff's assistants should be banned from the campus.

Apparently a higher number of players have left the campus than has been reported.

The latest is that the football program is down to 41 available players and only 3 offensive linemen.

If that’s the case I agree with the decision to not play. You can’t play with 3 available offensive lineman. Even if we had 5 it’s not enough. We would have to have reserves to give some guys a break. As much as we all want to watch us play and give some younger guys a chance it looks like we really just don’t have the numbers.

If that’s the case, then I believe the university needs to share that with the fans. Otherwise, they are doing them a big disservice, especially all of those who have invested their money in paying for this trip.

THIS. If Huff was actively encouraging players to leave, and the staff still here have been doing that, then sunlight on the issue is needed immediately. It’s staggering to believe coaches, who these young men and their families trusted, would actively try to hurt an athletic department and their fans. It all seems so completely malicious and like something I’d do on the playground in fourth grade. Am I overreacting here? I get the current college football landscape is what it is…but to play fast and loose with the future of so many young men is staggering. If this is true, one of the worst things we ever did was let Huff anywhere near campus.
