Free speech still has consequences

It’s amazing to me how people don’t understand the meaning of free speech. Executives have been fired from giant corporations because of personal opinions that are expressed on social media. The company felt it represented them in a bad light so boom. Done. They didn’t get arrested, they weren’t stopped by anybody from putting it on their Facebook page but their company fired them.

The courts continually side with employers on this.

I have an issue with employers controlling employee political speech that occurs off the clock. Especially an employer that takes government contracts. Certainly the employer is free to act politically.

This country needs a big dose of "mind your own business".
Does that go for the liberal PC police who police every adjective out of our mouths?

I don't care what courts say. And I am well aware of what "free speech" actually entails. I just find it incredibly distasteful for employers to hold legitimate political speech against employees, especially ones that suckle the government teat. Remember, businesses have the right to donate enough political money to actually own and corrupt the system. The fvxk should any of them care if an employee gives POTUS the bird? They've been giving us the bird for a while now.

So, if I am in sales and do something out in the public that would embarrass the company or cause them harm in terms of image, then they should have no right to get rid of me?

I would honestly normally agree with you. But in this case I think the fact it went viral and it’s a picture of her flipping off the president. I don’t think there is much else they could do.

The company could've issued a statement saying they disagree with their employees form of protest but we (the company) believe in free speech. You know, since corporations are people.

So, if your son would have flipped you off would have disciplined him?

Are we talking about a person losing their job due to flipping off the president's motorcade, or something rattling around in your head?
I know most people in my company, particularly those who deal with the public, would be dismissed for being on social media flipping the POTUS the finger and that includes Obama getting the one finger salute.

I know it's wrong to fire someone for flipping off the president, any of them. The president is a civilian. Not a god.

Let's say your business has a bid in to get a contract to install all the cabinets in a new high-end apartment complex. This is potentially a high 6-figure paycheck. However, one of your employees hates the politics of the guy funding the project. This employee is then photographed flipping the guy off as he drives through town on the weekend. The picture makes the papers because the financier is somewhat of a local celebrity. This is brought to the financier's attention and he finds out the guy works for you. The financier makes it known to you that he does not intend to hire a company to work on his project that would have someone that crass and openly hostile to him on staff. He further implies that you could still get the contract if you fire the guy. What do you do?

I don't find legitimate political speech embarrassing. If your employer does, they are un-American and you should find a new employer.

And yes, flipping the bird is legit political speech. Personally I'd like to see the throwing of rotten produce make a comeback.

First I am assuming this mythical guy is a real asshole if he's not even in office but random people want to flip him off. Is this Trump pre-POTUS? Then I'd tell him he can tell me how to run my business when I can tell him how to run his. And to shove my bid up his ass. Life is too short to kiss some asshole's ass just for money.

I've been in a similar situation. I told the person I didn't want the job that bad. I can get another.

Ok then, white snakes.

I don't hire and fire people for not agreeing with my politics or other such things. I once had a republican and WVU fan working for me at the same time. I had a headache the whole time. :) True story, except for the headache.

Maybe because that company respects the office of the president of the united states.
