Game Summary:

On what was as great coring night from point guard Andrew Taylor, the Herd men’s basketball team sustained a tough road loss 88-86 against a scrappy Akron team at the James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday night

It was also the mid range shooting and athleticism of Taevion Kinsey that propelled the Herd in the second half that gave Marshall the boost they needed in the second half.

Perimeter defense was the Achilles’ heel for the Marshall Thundering Herd in the first half as the Akron Zips used a 19-10 run to lead the Herd at the break 49-40.

Kinsey and Taylor paced the Herd with 16 (Taylor) and 12 ( Kinsey) respectively, in the first 20 minutes of action. but did not get a ton of production outside of those two starters in the early going.

The backcourt duo of Greg Tribble and Bryan Trimble, Jr. led the way for the Zips with 17 and 9 respectively in the first half.

Post defense wasn’t much better as the Herd had foul trouble throughout the night. Obinna Anochili-Killen went to the bench early in the 2nd half with three personal fouls. He ended up fouling out of the game after playing just nine minutes. The nation’s leader in blocked shots. Anochili-Killen did not register a block and grabbed just one rebound.

Marko Sarenac, Andrew Taylor, and David Early hit back-to-back-to-back threes in the second half of play to spark a run that got the Herd back in the ballgame.

That 11-4 run was what the Herd needed to cut down the lead to three with less than 15 minutes to play.

Guard David Early hit his second three to give the Herd a quick two-point lead, but Brian Trimble hit a triple to give the Zips a one-point advantage. The Logan native finished with 11 points in the contest.

Kinsey finished with 30 points for Marshall. He also had a beautiful 30-foot assist to Darius George for an alley-oop dunk to give MU a four point lead with just over eight minutes to play. Andrew Taylor finished with 26, just one shy of his career high.

Marshall falls to 4-3 on the young season and they will play the Duquesne Dukes led by former Akron Zips’ head coach Keith Dambrot on Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center. Tip time for that one is 7pm.
