While watching the Tonys (I date an actress, it was mandatory viewing) tonight, one of the presenters was a former NY Ranger hockey player-turned-actor. He made mention of a musical/play based on Gander, Newfoundland.

How have I never heard this story? Have any of you (dumb question, I know everyone claims to have known everything on here)? There are a bunch of published articles on it over the last year, but it seems to have flown under the radar until the play this year:

First time I've seen this. Very nice story. We have a lot of hatred in the world, but more of this kind of stuff happens than people realize. This board lives at the edge of its ideological differences, but when push comes to shove, I'll bet most on here would have contributed in the the same situation.

no, but i did stay at a quaint little shit hole of a hotel off of 390 in dansville, ny the other night. south of buffalo/rochester down through corning is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of NY. i'm fond of the northern part of the state, also.

Yes, I knew of this.

The people of Gander also did the US a solid back in the 80s when a charted plane carrying over 200 members of the 101st Airborne crashed and burned there after take off, killing everyone on board. The town erected a beautiful memorial to the victims, the design of which makes it pretty clear Gander appreciates the US and our military. Good people in Gander.

I have, but I do recall hearing about it until around the tenth anniversary when all the news stories started popping up again.

What took you there? I don't know exactly where it is, but I've heard of it. A couple of years ago, I met a couple from there on the beach who were vacationing in Florida.

I think my senior year of high school we went there for a scrimmage. Both teams had won their section, so we scrimmaged them to stay fresh. If it is the same place, their high school gym reminded me a lot of Beckley's armory; it was old, had a seating area raised above the gym in a circle, and had an old fieldhouse feel to it.

I believe it is close to another really small town called Prattsburgh. In high school, friends used to dress up in cowboy hats, Wrangler jeans, big belt buckles, and boots to try and fit in, then go to a local bar there and drink. They had entire personas and stories that they would keep up each time they went there.

If you're ever up that way again, I highly recommend visiting the Finger Lakes. There is a crazy number of natural waterfalls around some of them, the wineries are great to visit, and the scenery is very nice. Over the last few years, the secret has started to spill on them, and a number of entertainers (Susan Sarandon, Derek Jeter) and big politicians have purchased properties there.

took the kid on an upper ontario fishing trip and stopped there on the way back for the night. finger lakes look like a great spot, was checking that out. thinking of making it a future vacation spot.

had one great day, that was the result. rest of the week was borderline horrible what-the-hell-did-i-drive-14 hours-for fishing. fished 4 different lakes, caught just 1/2 a dozen fish or fewer (small mouth, walleye, northern) each of the other days. stopped on canada side of falls on way back, we were both first timers and equally in awe. all the pictures i've seen over the years doesn't come close to doing niagra justice. a great week, something we'll remember forever.

did he help you clean all those fish? My old man knew back when I was that age I'd butcher up whatever we caught.

Did you just portion out and freeze or get creative with any? My Dad tried pickling some walleye one year. Wasn't too bad of a recipe, cooks while you can it in pressure cooker.

no, like your ole man, i figured he'd have them hacked up. conditions in the butcher house wasn't ideal for teaching (flies/mosquitoes). I filleted most of them up there and we fried those in a cajun batter, was pretty good. didn't do anything creative with any, yet, just filleted and froze what we brought home. may take a look at a pickling recipe, you're the second person who has said pickled pike is worth trying.
