GM is closing plants, mostly giving up on cars

All-in on trucks, SUV's/CUV's, and "the future" with EV's and autonomous crap. These closings are only the initial cuts IMO, I don't see any GM sedan lasting past 2025.

This follows Ford's moves to kill all but the Mustang.

If gas ever shoots back up to $5, the Asians are going to clean our clocks for good and that will be the end of the US auto industry.

What a sad day. This country and GM can't even build cars anymore.

Regardless of who is POTUS, this is a defeat for this country. We were once known for cars.

We can still build cars. Damn fine ones. Just is no one is buying sedans. BMW and Mercedes sell more SUVs than cars, and you don't get much more prestigious of a car history than Mercedes Benz...if I made a list of the best cars ever built I would probably put at least five M/B's on it.

I am talking about American brands. Not the German brands. I know they build them here.

True about Sedans. It is all the crossover stuff and trucks. SUV's.

We still build fine trucks. I would like to have a new truck. But, the price tag is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The problem I see is we get into with the Russians or Chinks we are going to need to build stuff(tanks, vehicles, etc.). National security issue when we can't build shit and all these imports

This is my most lame Dad post ever, but the new Pacifica's (especially the hybrids) are really nice. There is room for competition among the Odyssey and Sienna.

If you're like me though (not a car guy, just want reliability over all other variables), then it's going to take a lot to unseat the Japanese.

Can’t adapt to a changing market fast enough.

We created the market that now exists. Upright, boxy thing with enough power to get out of its own way. That's American. Japs and the Euros had upright boxy things, but they were under-powered.

The bailouts were because of legacy costs. Something the Japs and Euros do not have at home. Socialism, baby.

I'm saying if M/B cannot sell enough sedans, we sure as hell cannot. Go drive a new Impala or Lincoln Continental and tell me again we don't build good sedans. Fvcking women want to set up high.

Fvck the price of new trucks. I can't see spending that kind of money on something I am going to beat on and use. if I needed a truck, I'd buy an older Dodge Cummins and keep it running forever.

Yeah and now a days the Japanese offer that to women. I see those big huge Infiniti SUVs all over the place. Those are probably outselling Yukon’s now. GM is a mess. I don’t blame Trump. Hopefully they use their corporate tax savings to give these folks a little more of a severance than normal but my guess is it will be less than normal.

Last year, GMC sold 84k Yukons (standard + XL). Infiniti sold 18k of the QX80. Chevy sold 56k Suburbans and 99k Tahoes. Cadillac sold 38k Escalades.

That's 277k vehicles of the same platform that GM sold last year.

Nissan sold 36k of the Armada, and 18k of the Infiniti QX80. Total of 54k.

Let's not even start comparing full size truck sales....it will get ugly.

You are an idiot.

Yeah, a lot of people are trying to slam Trump for this, but any person who watches the industry knows that this is where U.S. automakers are headed, and have been for a while.

Basically merging the SUV/Sedan market into mid-size vehicles with decent (20-25mpg) ratings.

I agree with you. But if GM came out and announced that they were increasing their lines I guarantee my phone would be lighting up with Trump tweets taking credit for it.

54k of lost market share. Sounds pretty much like a dagger in the heart. How many of those nissans and infinity’s were sold 10 years ago??

So you think GM makes a great vehicle??

Armada us down since its peak in the previous decade. Infiniti is up, but since the entire market is up since the recession ended it's not gaining share.

GM makes fine, competitive vehicles. Americans in general make by far the best large size trucks and SUVs. No other nation even markets HD trucks.

What current GM car do you think is crap?

Well considering there are 27 brands rated annually Buick is 8, Chevy is 18, GMC is 26 and Cadillac is 27 there is your answer.

Rated how and by whom? JD Power Intinal Quality, where tech unsavvy old people give bad scores because they cannot figure out these new-fangled touch screens? Chevy is ranked higher than Lexus on that one. Buick dropped...because they started putting in touch screens, probably. Caddy ranks better than M/B and your Infiniti.

Go drive some cars. The only thing from GM these days I have not sampled are the Cadillac's, I just don't know anyone at the Caddy dealer.

I have regularly requested a Ford Fusion when I used to rent cars all the time from Enterprise. Always liked them.

I like them as well.

My issue with the EcoBoost engines is I do not think most drivers understand the maintenance requirements of a turbo engine. Don't shut off the engine after you just ran the snot out of it, you MUST be on top of oil changes and MUST use the right oil, etc. I only recommend turbo engines to people I know to not be car dummies. It's also why I am leery of buying a used EcoBoost, I would prefer to private sale get one.

GM LS series engines = idiot proof.

If rifle can take his jag to jiffy lube then I’m sure they can use the correct oil in a ford

I've also taken a BMW (multiple times) and Maserati (once since it only needs changed once a year) to Walmart for oil changes. Nobody wants to drive 2 hours round-trip and another hour waiting for an oil change.

Fvck a duck...find a good local independent to take the Maser to, just to keep an eye on shit before it goes from $500 to $5000 to fix something.
