Good Job..

Gut wrenching for the team and I feel awful for both kickers and their families. If you haven't been there, I've been on both sides as an athlete and parent, you have no idea how they feel right now.

I can't entirely blame the kicker, its real tough to not however.
Coaching wasn't up to par, our O-Line didn't execute, injuries, etc, you name it...we have had it.

He was awful, but you cant blame one kid for that loss... Our offensive line was absolutely terrible and our other kicker was 0/2 as well.

Other kicker isn't a FG kicker. The fact they had to go to him shows how much faith they have in Smith.

Gee you guys didn't complain when Nick was 12 for 12. The kid has totally lost his confidence and needs our support and not our criticism.

Well, he's sure as shit not 12/12 anymore. He needs to go back to middle school JV and practice some more.

I'm not not defending Smith as he missed kicks (plural) that would have won us the game. But speaking as a fan of Marshall, watching Smith who had been perfect up until last game get the kicker's yips is tough to watch.

Well, while I understand he blew the game on a chip shot FG and was upset as any normal human being would be, you can't CRY. He was literally crying. That does NO good for him, the players, coaches, THE TEAM; ultimately. Doc made a good decision in sitting him down for the remainder of the game. Had he kept his $h*t together and not cried on national TV, he may have played in OT and won us the game. Could of, should of, would of. I feel for the young man, but you have got to keep it together out there. There's no place for crying on the football field before the game is over. Kickers must be mentally tough and he showed Doc that he IS NOT. You have to be able to miss them, shake it off, and hit the next one. You can't friggin CRY PERIOD. I don't think I'm being harsh either. I do realize these are young men, but they are MEN. The fact that Doc went with our kickoff specialist AFTER he missed one as well shows you exactly why he did so. The man may have missed, but he didn't cry. He went back out there to do his job. We came up short and this is in the past and we move on. However, I agree with Doc and his decision making. Hopefully Nick grows and learns from this. He may or may not be given another chance. I'm sure Doc will have him earn it back. Ultimately, we've played well considering injuries and to be where we are with a chance to still win CUSA is remarkable. Chase is a tough kid. I have to admit. It was tough seeing Chase play so remarkable on the last drive, take that late hit, etc. He put us in PERFECT position to win in regulation. Shame we couldn't get it done. Kickers have off days too. But you can't cry on the football field, Nick. Shake it off, prove you're a MAN and move on.

I haven't posted for years. But as the father of a young student athlete, football in particular, I have to say something. There is absolutely room on the football field for tears. You have obviously no clue.

As a fan of the game in general . To hit 13 in a row and then to miss 5/6 all under 50 yards, many under 40, one barely over 30.... brutal.

We're going to need him down the stretch. Hopefully he can shake this off and kick like he did the first 8 games.

You probably didn't play sports...did you...

Nothing wrong with showing emotions. I have no problem with the kid crying on the sideline as long as he gets it out of his system by the next FG attempt

Father of a young student athlete, (which i forgot, makes you a SME). So teach them to cry too, you seem to be good at it.

I'm not a psychologist (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently) and at least for me it takes a lot of emotional overload to cry, more so then any other sign of emotion. Unfortunately we have been told since we were young that crying is a sign of weakness. Personally I didn't cry when my shoulder was completely ripped out of the socket dangling by my side trying to make a foolish arm tackle playing Rugby... But you can bet I've shed quite a few tears when I've watched those videos of soldiers being reunited with their families. Does it make me weak, I really don't care, what is does is it make me human... Thus I would rather see a player shedding a few tears then throwing a helmet or pouting. At least I know he really cares... I bet Nick Smith works his A$$ off this week on his kicking mechanics.

Some of these posts make me ashamed. I hope, after looking at the time of the original postings, that emotion and alcohol were involved. I'd hate to think that this kind of hate comes honestly.

I have no problem with crying after the game. When it's over. But in that moment you can't cry. You have to keep your emotions under control, because in ot (as we saw) it's likely that you will be asked to win the game.

The Middle Tennessee kicker didn't have a good game either, he missed an easy kick in OT that would have won it for them, but he didn't cry. He kept his head and a few minutes later had to kick and hit it.

To me, that is the difference in winning and losing in every sport. I'm a baseball coach and mental toughness is the most important thing In a player. Nick lacked mental toughness on Saturday. I don't fault him for losing us the game and I hope he has a great career here it was painful to watch. But I don't like the crying during the game.

I cried when I lost two state wrestling championships. I cried when I lost a state baseball championship on more than one occasion. I cried when I was told my football playing days were over in high school due to injury. I cried when I graduated boot camp, I cried at some of my brothers funerals I attended.
I picked myself up each time and moved on, Nick will have to do the same. Like I said, I'm ok with him crying and being emotional as long as it's out of his system by the next FG attempt.

John Wooden's Quote:
Today is the only day. Yesterday is gone.

Nick Smith you will bounce back. Every human being has moments that they wish they can take back. Work hard and Go Herd!

Because you already sucked and your team didn't win...I honestly wouldn't expect you to know athletics. Those who dog athlete emotions either were terrible at sports or never played.

Dude, what are you, like 6 years old? My post wasn't meant to "dog" athlete emotions. But since you've taken it out of context, like most children often do, I'll break out the BIG purple crayon just for you. PERCEPTION is EVERYTHING. If you believe differently, you're naive and delusional. Especially in this game. I feel for Nick and wish him nothing but the best. However, my point was simply that you have to keep your composure. We still had a football game to win (at that point). If you choose to argue with anything I just said, god help you. Nuff said.

I feel badly for our team that lost the game last Saturday. I feel worse for people who would single out and publicly excoriate one player on our team because of the loss. I just don't know how they were raised. The kicking game was not the only part of our team that did not perform as well as was needed to win. As I said, our team lost the game, not the boy who was kicking. I am sure our team will do well in the future and that includes our kicking game.

You don't agree with Nick's reaction, alright. I don't agree with you but thats fine. But why be so damn condescending of it if you claim to care? Just say you don't agree and be done with it.

Mental toughness lost the game for us not just the kickers. I agree they need to keep their composure but i also know how disappointed he must have felt letting his team down when they were all counting on him. I am ok with the crying as long as he can regroup and get the next one. It wasn't his fault that we lost though. If our team had a bit more mental toughness as a whole there wouldn't be so many penalties that killed so many drives. I think clock management and timeouts played a bigger role than smith did in costing us the game. I know litton was hurt but birdsong couldve went out there cold and handed the ball off to center it and call a timeout. I was literally screaming at my tv when that occurred bc the coaches knew how huge that last time out was and that we would get one last chance if defense stepped up. Why did we not have a single play ready when we should have had multiple plays ready to run back to back? I was as disappointed as anyone when we missed the kicks but it is a team game and we lost for so many other reasons than just the kicker.

That's precisely what I said had you read between the lines. But, I deemed my comment necessary due to your diction, or rather lack there of. Following your comment, and I quote, <"Because you already sucked and your team didn't win...I honestly wouldn't expect you to know athletics">. You proved to me that you were merely not capable of comprehending my statement on a football forum to boot. So let's try this...I do NOT agree with you and I'm done with it. I do hope that statement will suffice ;)

I'm a Marshall graduate and fan. I typically cruise the board to get details on football topics. Posters that make statements such as the one you made are just annoying and take up drive space. This is an open forum, open to opinion, and every post shouldn't be scrutinized by the likes of local trolls such as yourself. Saying things such as, "you already sucked", just makes you look like an uneducated fool. Think before you post in the future.

In conclusion, I'll revert back to getting my news rather than wasting time with entertaining such erroneous comments. It would be nice to see this board stick together more and avoid childish sidebar nonsense. GO HERD!!!
