In this mornings edition calling on Herd fans to relax and calm down following the game with Ohio pointing out the game in 2011 when Ohio put a beat down on us and a young QB named Cato. What he does not point out is that Birdsong came here highly touted and an "experienced" quarterback. Leave the rest of it for you to read and draw your own conclusions about Mr. Taylor's column. I will agree we need to wait and see.

Gee, I thought we were ready to play Ohio State.
I agree with Tayler's article.
Too many of us have unreal expectations way too soon.

Well, first of all, I always get a huge laugh out of media folks criticizing fans. Media, who see the game for free, vs. fans who pay to see the game, support the program, and are likely also customers/readers of the H-D. So a hearty "well-done" to the media tool. Yes, that's sarcasm.

Second, one would hope to see improvement from game 1 to game 2, rather than a GIANT step backwards.

Third, it was OU. Some of our fans are probably tired of our struggles with this decidedly mediocre program, which as much as I hate to say it, owns us in Athens. As Chuck Landon was astute enough to say, "embarrassing."

No worries, they get similar laughs at message board posters criticizing them. It's all part of the landscape of sports

The media was in full spin mode and circling the wagons on the coaches behalf the last few days. Paul and Woody decided discussing the Bengals and Power were more important than Saturdays game. Maybe if we don't discuss it, it will go away, or maybe it was a bad dream. LOL!

The Herald-Dispatch writers need to be thankful they even have a job. Without any readers they would have no job - period. At least not as a journalist in Huntington. That being said we as fans are completely in the right to express views other than those of the sports writers who probably are fearful of losing their privilege to get in free, eat/drink for free, inside from the elements. So don't be too quick to call out fans for what they could clearly see that the writers saw as well but do not want to say.

I will say that sportswriters are less likely to draw knee jerk conclusions than the average fan.

Everybody, whether you buy a ticket or not/whether you donate to the program or not, has the right to criticize.

Dan is right. Most sportswriters who take time to peruse message boards to "take the pulse of the average fan" often enjoy the comic relief provided by passionate but mostly clueless fans.

Btw, Grant's last name is Traylor and not one of the many offerings provided in this thread. Lol!

Same column has been written here and everywhere else every September for 100 years. "we can still win the league", "we can still go to a bowl", "relax", "this is a work in progress", "remember when * was a freshman" , blah, blah, blah. "Fans are out of touch" "people need to tone down their negativity", blah, blah, blah.

It is way easier than actually analyzing the football team. This team is in for a very long season.

Hey, I get a lot of laughs too from some of the garbage posted here. But you're also more likely to find honest analysis here than you are in the H-D or any other local media outlet.

Flair that's because we all know any of the media people do not want to lose their "freebies" by making someone employed by the university by writing or telling it like it was.

Yes, thank you, I am aware of that. Plus I think some of their employers don't want to upset the golden goose, so to speak, or alienate a coach/Hamrick/MU so they lose access or a broadcast or contract partner. It's quite obvious. Which is why you can find better analysis on message boards if you can wade through the knee-jerk reactionary crap. Also, SOME media folks have competely forgotten what it's like to be a fan.

You guys act like media getting in free to watch a game is the extent of their work.

You know what happens when the game ends? They continue working for several more hours while you're tailgating or eating or are back at home.

There are clearly fair criticisms that can be thrown at media, but resentment for decent working conditions isn't one.

How you feel about Marshall is solely at your own discretion. You shouldn't allow anyone to sway your opinion, for better or for worse. It should always be your own. But you probably should allow for the fact that not everyone will agree with you, nor are you or anyone else going to always be correct.

The least you could do is get the guy's name correct for accuracy's sake, haha.

Respectfully, some of you are clueless as to what really happens at a newspaper and the culture that exists there.

Yep, fans are clueless because a journalism degree makes you a football expert. Makes sense.

Grant actually gives The Herd pretty positive slant on most issues without coming off as a total Homer.
1,000 times better than "Cheap Suit Chuck" and his high school sophomoric curtsies-tootsie approach to sports writing.

I didn't say that but it's obvious based on some of these posts that some of you don't understand the culture, nuances and etiquette of a newsroom.

My comment was a reply to jocktalker and his reference to clueless fans.
