Hampton Our Next Opponent

We have 2 common opponents. They lost to W&M by 5 and Presbyterian by 15.
Speaking of the Blue Hose. They lost their HC after our game. He is now the HC at Appalachian State
I went and watched Hampton play at Radford a month or so ago. The Murrow kid is the real deal, reminds a person a lot of the kid from Hofstra that we could not stop. That team started out the season slow and came on late. They beat Radford at Radford to keep Radford out of sole possession of 1st place during the regular season. They are a chippy team, kinda dirty, this will be a difficult matchup for Marshall, BUT if Elmore and the rest play like they did against PC, they can beat this bunch. If they have an off game, Murrow will have a field day. I would advise any who can attend, to attend this game. If we make it past this bunch, I feel that we win the CIT. PC relied on 3 point shots to win games, if you played physical against them you can beat them, Hampton does it all on offense inside and outside.

WOW! Talk about moving up. This was his first year at Presbyterian!
Not bad, and probably deserved though 1 year doesn't tell what a coach can really do. PC typically wasn't in the top half of the BS, this year was a different story, arguably because of him.

What do you want to say. This is this team's first year in the lowly Big South, moving up from one of the kidding itself by being DI HBCU league, the MEAC. (Meaning most of its players were recruited at the MEAC level). It went 18-16, with three of those wins being non-Div I teams, and 9-7 for T5 in the BS league. Lost to W&M at home by 5, who we beat by 20 at home; and at Presbyterian in the vaunted Templeton PE Center before a crowd of 340, by 15, which we beat by 17.

On paper, we are way better than they are. Comes down to motivation, again.

H/D said he was at Presbyterian 2 years......still not very long. He brought in some players to that small (980 study body) private school, so good for him.

Just stop Sam. If we can lose to Rice, we can lose to anyone. Lowly Hampton at one time was a team regularly seen in the NCAA, WHILE IN THE MEAC, about the same time frame when Richmond and VCU rose up. Continually trashing conferences and programs is all u can do, without even knowing much about them. CUSA is above them?? Lol let's see, the Big South sent one to the NCAA, 1 to NIT, 3 to CIT, at least 1 to CBI. CUSA completely missed the NIT, none other than Marshall and FIU made it past the first round of the smaller tourneys, so what does that say about your twisted mindset that we should trash anyone from another mid major conference? Jeez. Oh no, Hampton is a BS school, we should trash them, don't need to show up for the game. Be reminded that PC, who didn't make it past the quarterfinals of their own conference gave us a helluva game until 3 minutes left. Go ahead and blast ignorance away.

Still good turn around in 2 years time. There are a few small religious (Baptist) schools there, Charleston southern, PC, maybe a couple others

You think we should show up? After all, we are just so bad and CUSA is so bad, and we should be happy to have a team.

You blast "ignorance". OK, what was the score between HU and W&M and ours? Was I wrong? What were the PC scores? Was I wrong? What was HU's record? How many times has the BS league played in the play in game? How many times the MEAC or the SWAC? How many? Didn't we all bash ME for saying the a theoretical win out MU was destined to play in? Because CUSA was above a play in? What changed? How come most preseason guides list the MEAC, SWAC, and BS on one page with the other bottom leagues, and give 16 pages (Sporting News, I still have a copy) to CUSA, like the other mid-majors? What was the BS league's non conference record? (0.3607, NET - C 23rd)? What was the MEAC? (0.1409, last) What was CUSA's? (0.5101, NET - C 13th). What was MU's NET (148th) What was HU? (209th)

It is easy to sit back, factless and clueless, and just say "NO" "you are 'ignornant'" to people that say things you disagree with. It is harder to know basketball.

We are, as we have been in every game in this tournament, a better team from a better league, having faced better competition. We should win. Failure to do so is motivation. I expect to beat this team.

CUSA is still living off of a legacy name (which is dying, what seed did ODU get?), otherwise what have we done as a conference since memphis left other than MTSU ruling it for a few years? Who gives a shit about NET, only the NCAA tourney does. Hampton, if you can't read, came on later in the season, I will break it down for you since we have reading comprehension issues here, they started off 10 wins, 15 losses. Which means they have lost only 1 game since then and that was in the BS quaterfinals to Campbell, the regular season champ. They kept Radford from being the regular season champ. They did beat Richmond, as we know is an A10 team during that crap filled stretch. If you have issues following team progression, then how in the heck are you even able to figure out that Marshall corrected something to get back on the right path themselves? RPI, NET, who cares. Radford did have to play in last year, because they weren't the regular season champ and went on a tear to win the BS during their tourney, beating the ASUN champ of this year Liberty, only other year I recall them playing in, UNCA did one year as well some time ago. That has nothing to do with a conference and everything to do with the team. Had radford or unca had better records those years, the play in's would have been someone else. Who cares? They do play in's as well for other seeds now other than the 16th seed. What seed was ODU this year, no its not a trick question, and they only had 8 losses, which was better than our record last year, did it go up for the conference, or down? Your logic is beyond understandable, and according to you, we should be better than Gonzaga and Duke just because our arena is as big or bigger........yeah that makes a ton of sense.

Sam: Do yourself a favor. Write up your most voluminous opus contradicting basic logic. Print it. Review and check for spelling/grammatical errors. Wait 3 days for it to ripen. Then wad it up & deposit in the recycling bin.
We don't care to hear the dead horse beaten anymore. The poor thing has riggered and starting to smell really bad.
Go HERD!!! Beat Hampton.....

so....from what Beefcake reported, each team is like 7-1 or 8-1 in its last 8 or 9 games....something has to give Tuesday night!! We can beat anyone in this tournament. Look for a much larger crowd this time...

Yes exactly, we will have the edge due to them having traveled to NJIT (who won 22 games..sam gonna say they suck too) but this game will be competitive if both teams come out playing like they can. If I lived closer, I would definitely be at this game, likely more interesting than playing Cal state whatever or Texas Southern (shoot me if i have to see another texas program after conference play), I would encourage anyone that can attend, to do so, may be the last "interesting" game of the year.

OK, so after a year of correctly pointing out that expectations of this team were excessive, NOW i get bashed for actually thinking we are pretty good.

We are pretty good. Not near good enough to win CUSA, but certainly good enough to win versus mid-pack teams from true one-bid league from the very bottom of DI.

News flash, CUSA is a true one bid league as well, has been for a while. No one is bashing you for thinking Marshall is good. Don't recall anyone saying we are bad right now, we were mid season and the team deserved the bashing. What you are getting ripped on is believing we are elite (acting like a WVU fan..), as a program, as a conference over other mid majors, that we should just win because that is how things were when CUSA was a true 2-3 bid league. Go back to when we still have all the CUSA 2.0 schools here, this is an argument you can't contradict, but do you not recall how many flies you could count in the arena's of houston, SMU, tulsa when they weren't doing well, ECU, and we were a multi-bid league during all that with UTEP, UAB and Memphis. Now go on about attendance figures for other mid majors with your chest puffed out, and think about it. This CUSA we are in, is basically the sunbelt, which is below the MVC conference and doesn't have a pot to piss in to be able to throw off on other conferences. What's even more funny is you actually got something right today, MEAC is a HBCU league, you claimed the BS was the other day, which never has been lol Good job though.

Calm down or you'll shoot in your pants.

What does this post say about CUSA? Also MU?
You're attempting to prop up a terrible tournament and terrible opponents. Yet many feel other programs underperform and underwhelm...and are not afraid to say it on here (not like it does anything to change it).
Who cares who MU faces at this point? Its become pick up games for the team at MU's expense. If Dan wins this whole thing then refrain from being critical to others who win the equivalent in post season.

then went 9-7 in the Big South, which is probably in the bottom 4 non-HBCU DI leagues,

Reading not your strong suit?

No one is saying CUSA is not a mid-major. Actually the only mid-major that proclaims itself to not be so is your beloved AAC. However, saying every mid-major league is the same is like saying that if you cannot afford a Lexus, there is no difference between a fully optioned Lincoln and a Chevy Spark; or if you cannot get into Harvard, then there is no difference between Colgate and WV State. Mid-majors have levels. And we are in the second tier of the mid-majors. The teams we have played are in the bottom tier. We should win.

Now, the other two teams left in this titanic struggle, the WAC's CSU-Bakersfield, and the Horizon's Wisconsin-Green Bay, should exicte and scare any Herd fan.

You are either just trying to argue (and, BTW, WHERE WERE YOU back at mid-season when I, and others, were trying to discuss (not bash) this team and were shut down with dumb (and dead wrong) shouts of "we might just get hot in the conference tournament and who knows? ), or you really know so little about sports that you believe what you post.

beef - Let’s stop going down this rabbit hole once & for all. We are wasting our time arguing with an old man that has too much time on his hands. I am adding Sam to my ignore list. See ya buddy! Go Herd!!!!

I am as calm as a cucumber..If Dan wins, at least it accomplished something from a wrecked season. No one here has propped up the teams on MU's behalf, I even said IUPUI wasn't that great of an opponent, they faded as the season went along, on the other hand, belittling other program's and/or conferences to make it all seem just too easy and beneath MU is a different bird entirely. I suggest you and sam sit down, maybe watch a few games from these other leagues and figure out who is who, I mean if you guys are avid basketball fans as is being portrayed on here. I made a post in a different thread outlining the Big South in particular, its in my area so I know the schools more than some other regional mid major conferences. Gardner Webb and Radford, just those two, has more Power conference scalps than all of CUSA, so be careful of what you say in accusing anyone of propping up MU or CUSA by "pretending" to pump up these other schools. If Hampton can beat Radford at Radford, they can beat us, seen all three in person. I will reiterate that you and Sam go look at Radford's schedule, especially out of conference, played a lot of the same programs with different results.., then get back to me with that sort of accusation lol Radford took out Georgetown and Penn State last year, Took out Notre Dame and Texas this year, that is more than we can say. Gardner Webb took out GT and WF this year, gave UVA a hard time in the NCAA. While the bottom of that conference isn't good, the top half can give anyone a hard time and dismissing them because we still think Memphis is here propping up CUSA, is out of touch with reality. Of course this is where sam comes in saying arena size matters in how good a program is......we need to be beating Duke and Gonzaga with that assessment. Wad is shot now, you're welcome.

I am adding Sam to my ignore list.

But, next year, when we who watch and understand basketball want to discuss it, November - March, who will be there to remind us that "we might just get hot in the conference tournament and who knows". Who will post such gems as "Lets just wait to see how Thursday's game turns out" (and then be strangely silent on Friday).

Basketball, discussed as a season long sport? Wow.

Real Sam you and I have never met - at least not knowingly due to the anonymity of the board. That said do you ever EVER attend any athletic events at Marshall in person? Do you purchase season tickets for any Marshall sports? What specifically is your main complaint about Marshall athletics? Why so opposed to seeking entry into a better geographical fit via another conference - one in which we fans could travel to? I mean I voice a lot of complaints and offer criticism (without solutions like so many others) but you have lowered yourself to a new standard. What is your main malfunction about Marshall athletics?

This is EPIC... anything I can do to throw some lighter fluid on the SamC vs. Cake smack-off? Happy to contributed!!!!

Cake: Have you ever been to a Herd game in any sport?
SamC: You talkin to me? You talkin to me? Then who the he77 else you talkin to?
Cake: Yeah... I'm talkin' to you...
SamC: You're funny!
Cake: I’m funny how? I mean funny, like I’m a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh?

You guys are making ALL of us laugh!!!

do you ever EVER attend any athletic events at Marshall in person?

All the time.

Do you purchase season tickets for any Marshall sports?

Football, yes. Basketball, no, cannot make every game, still attend more than half [/QUOTE]

What specifically is your main complaint about Marshall athletics?

I don't know that I have one. The football team is in great hands, the AD is the best ever, and the basketball coach has had more success than anybody else in 30 years. IPF, baseball stadium, better travel, all is well.

Why so opposed to seeking entry into a better geographical fit via another conference - one in which we fans could travel to?

First by travel, you are talking about 200 "superfans". 99% are going to watch on TV. In fact, among the saddest threads on this board are people that cannot simply figure out where are the games being shown. They all are, and posting on a board 30 minutes before the game starts is not how you find out.

But anyway.

MAC - Been there, DOMINATED, done that. Got the tee shirt. We did all we could in the MAC. Plus, I have heard that, when the TV deal expires, the MAC is heading for a break up. Some schools are simply not willing or able to continue to subsidize programs no one cares about, as these schools become older and more female. It is like quitting a good job for a job with slightly less travel, with a company that has lost money for 20 years whose stock is 40 cents a share.

SBC - Hey, if you wanted to mix CUSA and the SBC together and come with two geographically logical conferences, fine. No one has asked. The SBC is a slight step down. It is. What share of the $7M CUSA buyout are you willing to pay? So you can go to Myrtle Beach every other year?

AAC - The AAC people remind me of the nagging mother who berates her daughter why she does not marry the med student, rather than the solid hard working carpenter. Umm, mom, because the carpenter asked, is a solid and hard working man who will provide a good life, and the med student HAS NO INTEREST.

I mean I voice a lot of complaints and offer criticism (without solutions like so many others)...What is your main malfunction about Marshall athletics?

None, really. I do not care for the AAC worshipers in the fan base. I do not care for the "others" will pay for what I want attitude in the fan base. And I do not care for the people who apply a ridiculous and unfair double standard between football, and its coach, and basketball, and its coach, in this fan base. And I do not care for the childlike, if not childish, idea that Marshall is just "supposed" to be better than everybody else, attitude in this fan base.

If you look at what MU is as an institution, and WV is as a state, MU, and by that I say MU fans, built something very special, something schools with FAR more advantages and resources, did not, or could not do. It pains me that people criticize it.

You are propping these teams up.
Absolutely nobody cared or cares for whom we are playing except a few on here because its necessary to make this 4th rate tournament worth it.
The good thing about basketball is you can level down and still feel you've accomplished something.

Preseason: "Guys! We won CUSA! We're gonna be a force!"
Seeing the schedule: "I think MU has a chance to surprise some of these teams. MU can certainly put their name out there if they can beat 1 of the 3 major programs and show up against the other two."
After OOC: "Its ok. We have experience. We'll do well in conference."
Conference losing streak: "Uh..."
End of regular season: "Its ok. We can still win the tournament. This team is special and have worked out their problems!"
Win game one: "Alright. We have a chance to make the NCAA tournament if we win out. This team is special!!"

MU not selected because they had no major wins and vastly underperformed overall in the season and tournament.

"Lets pay for a tournament and allow Elmore to get the scoring record!!!"
"Wow, the field is full of tough opponents. MU better be ready!!"

MU slowly lost ground of where they began to where they currently are.
Its one thing to be optimistic about the team and their playing but its another to say this is really any kind of achievement tournament.
Personally, I was against anything below the NIT. If MU didn't get that then oh well.
Instead we bought into a tournament that literally has ".com" in the name (when others complain about bowl games having stupid corporate names) and while MU is winning (as they should) the wins are against OOC teams that MU fans would say, "we should win this pretty easily" against a few months earlier but now see as "a legit team" because its a post season tournament.
