Haney has come into a bit of controversy over remarks he made on his Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio show. He’s accused of sexism and racist remarks and was suspended by the PGA from the show. He’s catching it pretty hard from the LPGA players as well. The remarks were a response to the question who he felt would win the LPGA US Open. Here’s his response...

Johnson: “This week is the 74th U.S. Women’s Open, Hank.”

Haney: “Oh it is? I’m gonna predict a Korean.”

Johnson, laughing: “OK, that’s a pretty safe bet.”

Haney: “I couldn’t name you six players on the LPGA Tour. Maybe I could. Well … I’d go with Lee. If I didn’t have to name a first name, I’d get a bunch of them right.”

Johnson: “We’ve got six Lees.”

Haney: “Honestly, Michelle Wie is hurt. I don’t know that many. Where are they playing, by the way?”

And....that’s it. This makes me insensitive I guess, because I don’t get it.

Well....geez....I laughed. Guessing I'm a disgusting pig.

Oh well. I'm sure I'll get over it.

Just be smarter about this shit. Jesus.

It would be like if last night during the NBA Finals someone ask Jeff Van Gundy who he thought would win the WNBA championship and he said, "I don't know when it is, nor do I care, but I bet it will be a bunch of African-American women. Probably with names like 'Tamikqua'." It's just not necessary.

I think women's professional sports are a joke and are mostly artificially propped up, because there is very little market for it--even women would rather watch men play. But there's so sense in going out of your way to marginalize it more than it already is. Just pay his stupid tax (suspension) and move on.

I’m not sure I agree totally Sean. I thought Haney’s remarks were fairly benign. I agree that we have to be mindful of the age we live in, but there’s some responsibility toward the “slighted” in understanding what is truly meant in a derogative way and what is light hearted. And why aren’t we allowed to express observations anymore? Although I don’t follow the lpga, I think it’s obvious that Koreans are dominating. Saying that, even jokingly, points out that Koreans are better at golf. That’s hardly a put down.

Look at my spelling bee thread...am I racist for observing the nationality of the winners? These aren’t comments coming from hatred, they’re observations.

Perfect thread to distinguish between girlie men and real men.

Girlie men like greed and company will be offended, as will Butch-girl Rosie, while real men like herdman and myself won't be offended at all.

I didn't take it as racist. I took it as stupid. It's not a big deal to me either way. I'd also argue that the guy doing the interview fed the conversation as well. If you're trying to promote the event, make sure you're talking with someone who knows something about it. It just further marginalizes something that's fighting for significance to begin with.

If you have a daughter who's a really good golfer, enjoy's Hank Haney's stuff, and he can't even name you a female professional golfer outside of anyone named "Lee" or Michelle Wie, I can see where it would kill her enthusiasm for the sport. Put up the clubs, honey. You don't matter. That's where I have issue. That's all.

As a person that only randomly catches LPGA news while surfing TV or reading a paper, all I know about the sport is that it's dominated by Asians, mostly Koreans, and I can't tell you the name of one American player.

He should have said, " I don't know, I don't really follow it", but he was just being candid and truthful. That's not allowed today.

I don't take issue with watching female golf.

I saw some betas were virtue signaling their outrage over Haney without providing his quote - is this seriously it?!

Somebody is always offended. What he said was no big deal. But, these companies and organizations overreact and are like "oh my god we have to suspend or fire them"

Truth is the Koreans are good at women's golf and it would not be surprising to see a Korean woman win it.

But, noooo somebody gets their panties in a wad.

What did he say that was so bad?

Hammond you could be fired or blackballed for what you just wrote. The part of saying women's sports are a joke and propped up. That could cause you a lot of trouble. That is how nit picky all this PC stuff is. It is overboard. Let's say you had some sponsors or were a public figure and said that. Holy cow, they would drop you in a minute.

This shit is destroying this country is what it is doing.

Furthermore, pisses me off because they messed with my line up. I had to listen to Michael Breed twice and it was a rerun.

Put Hank back on the damn radio, you soft asses at the PGA tour. Hank is a pot stirring crotchety guy and I like hearing it. He stirs it up. I get the lessons and inspirational messages from Breed and then I want to hear Hank and Caddie John stirring it up.

Screw the PGA Tour. Damnation, you can have Howard Stern on sat radio but not Hank?

I said professional women's sports are a joke. Personally, I'd much rather watch college softball than I would college baseball. I prefer women's soccer too. There's a place for it on the collegiate level and I'm all for Title IX and giving females a chance in sports to earn academic opportunities the same as men. But professionally, there's nothing that drives it.

Again, my problem was him commenting on something he knows nothing about--or he exaggerated his ignorance to disparage it. Either way, it's stupid. Just say you don't know instead of talking like a moron.

So you prefer grown women playing on a Little League field. Got it.

Half of you are certified nuts.

The PGA is a sponsor dependant organization. These days you can't risk losing sponsors. And I'm sure Asia is seen as a growth market for the PGA...god knows the golf boom in the USA fell off.

I think what he said is funny. But unless he hosts a comedy show, it wasn't smart to say that.

College level, I also prefer softball.

Women's sports.....I like some I guess....like professional beer drinking contests with beer hall babes.

"Quicker pace of play"

This is like the whining and white knighting going on about nets at baseball games.

What the hell does that have to do with this?

Baseball isn't a great game for TV. It's slow, scoring is often low without much offense. Nine innings with all the ads and pitcher changes, it gets a little long. Live and in person it's great; in person, you can BS, eat, get some beer, watch the guy in right field scratch his nuts if you are so inclined. On the flip side, I don't think I would go to a pro-softball game is such a thing became popular.

This might not be fair, but the bats make a difference in college baseball....and some part of the old bastard in my head thinks it isn't right. I'll still watch it. I just find the softball at that level a little more fun for TV. Maybe I am just weird....I'll watch a pimple pop on YouTube, but it ain't the same on a TV show.
