Just to avoid any confusion, those are not all pictures of the student center renovation.

Some of those show the work being done to Towers, including the dining area and the Towers West lobby.

Clearly, MU's future is as a much more gated campus deal, and we compete in a situation where there are less WV HS seniors every year. Lifestyle deals like better dorms, better rec, and food court type food is part of both the competition and the conversion into a more closed campus.

Sadly, our state government continues not to get it. JJ just gave $1M for a dorm at tiny Bluefield State, which has not had dorm students since the 1960s, and appointed a "task force" to study enrollment at tiny Glenville State, both to try to "save" the schools. Umm, I can save the state a lot of money. LISTEN to the students who are telling you where they want to go to school, and padlock the ones getting culled out.

Question. What is in the basement now? There used to be the textbook part of the bookstore, a beer only bar, a pool room, and a bowling alley, but that has been gone for years. The last time I was there they was just a small office for IDs and the rest was walled off.

Hard to make MU a gated campus when you have 2 4 lane segments of a US Highway (60) running through it (Third and Fifth Avenues). Especially more so now since MU continues to expand North of 3rd Ave. and South of 5th Ave.

The basement has a multipurpose/conference room where the bowling alley use to be, and the Campus ID office has moved to Drinko Library next to the IT Service Desk. Helps students not having to run around campus to get their ID and login accounts.

My understanding is with the renovation, the basement will have better access for students to utilize.

I remember when Chick-fil-A had just been set up. My go to for lunch almost everyday was a grilled chicken sandwich, pickles, no butter and a bag of baked chips. On occasion I would indulge and get the fried chicken.

wow that is way better than what we had (1980-84) A hot dog and fries was all I can remember them having for sale

I remember in the late 60's there were some vending machines and a bowling alley

Not gated, probably not the best choice of words on my part, but certainly more separate and closed off from town. If you look at the University's website, there is still a link from Kopp's time that outlines what they want, or at least wanted, since it pre-dates the decision to build stuff on the wrong side of the tracks along Hal Greer and the Brad Smith donation which if I understand it correctly moves the campus across Hal Greer for the first time, to do. Among the things they wanted was a narrower tree lined 3rd and 5th.

Rumor has it they're expanding past Hal Greer as you're saying...but buying up all the properties on that side.
Eventually moving toward Pullman.

I'm not sure if MU can use Eminent Domain though.

I remember the air hockey tables and pool tables in the basement along with the bowling alley in the 70's

I believe that State told the university, in a nice way, that any thoughts or proposals to narrow 3rd and 5th avenue isn't going to happen. The same with the illogical proposal to put 5th avenue in a tunnel from Hal Greer to 20th Street. A better solution for both roads is to install more pedestrian bridges.

Yes, the new business college building is suppose to be built on the south side of 4th Avenue, between Hal Greer and 15th St. I don't remember reading or hearing what the university plans to do with Corbly Hall after the Business College leaves the building. I'd propose moving all offices and programs from Gullickson to Corbly so that the athletic department can renovate Gullickson for the basketball practice court and to expand the locker rooms for the other Olympic Sports.

The bowling alley went away in the late 80s I believe.

It's gone but it survived until the mid 2000s. They turned that area into a big conference room (BE5) probably somewhere just before 2010. I think it was there when I started working at Marshall in 2008.
