In light of all this, it's probably best to remember one relevant historical fact: Robert E. Lee was opposed to Confederate monuments.

“It’s often forgotten that Lee himself, after the Civil War, opposed monuments, specifically Confederate war monuments,” Jonathan Horn, a Lee biographer, told PBS.

After the Civil War, Lee received a number of letters requesting support for the erection of Confederate memorials, according to Horn.

In June 1866, he wrote that he couldn't support a monument of one of his best generals, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, saying it wasn't "feasible at this time."

"As regards the erection of such a monument as is contemplated," Lee wrote in December 1866 about another proposed Confederate monument, "my conviction is, that however grateful it would be to the feelings of the South, the attempt in the present condition of the Country, would have the effect of retarding, instead of accelerating its accomplishment; [and] of continuing, if not adding to, the difficulties under which the Southern people labour."

Not only was Lee opposed to Confederate memorials, "he favored erasing battlefields from the landscape altogether," Horn wrote.

He even supported getting rid of the Confederate flag after the Civil War ended, and didn't want them them flying above Washington College, which he was president of after the war.

"Lee did not want such divisive symbols following him to the grave," Horn wrote. "At his funeral in 1870, flags were notably absent from the procession. Former Confederate soldiers marching did not don their old military uniforms, and neither did the body they buried."

“His Confederate uniform would have been ‘treason’ perhaps!” Lee’s daughter wrote, according to Horn.

"Lee believed countries that erased visible signs of civil war recovered from conflicts quicker,” Horn told PBS. “He was worried that by keeping these symbols alive, it would keep the divisions alive."

Oh copy and paste bonding and enlarging text. Dtard is getting fancy. He really means this post guys

wait his opinion doesn't count. You guys said that in another thread.
hhahaa

I honestly agree with the sentiment. Time to let it go and was when the handshake was made in 1865. That is harder said than done. But, in 2017 we are just stirring up a pot that doesn't need stirred and for what? Revenge? Rub it in the face? To make someone feel better?

Again, remember what comes around goes around.

the only people who are "stirring the pot" are republicans.
they have been "stirring the pot" for 50 years.

you forget nixons "southern strategy". that is stirring
the pot. the idiot dts has made the pot boil over.
if you want to talk about "stirring the pot" then
be honest about it.

You're a fvcking moron if you think the GOP is the only one stirring the pot. If that was the case how come antifa and other leftists groups continue to be violent. How come a Bernie supporter shot at GOP congressmen? Look whether you want to believe it or not the rhetoric from the left, everyone is a racist bigoted homophobe, is just as bad as what comes from the right

Now that's funny. Nobody stirs the pot more than the Demorats

you all are completely unreasonable. lee himself didn't want the
monuments, didn't want the confederate flag and did not want
the confederate uniform.

what is it with you guys (like we don't all know) you say you want
to honor your heritage (yeah right!) but you do not want to
listen to the leader of the confederacy regarding the heritage.
General Lee said bury it - why cant you do that?

the war is over as I stated above in some cases the people
of the south did not even want it but were bamboozeled into
it by plantation owners.

your forefathers if they even partook in the civil war were
likely not in favor of it.

the south was wrong - the confederacy was wrong - and
God gave victory to the Union. get over it, if you love
America put it behind you.

just stop and consider for a moment what America would
be like if the south had won. would there even be an
America - or would hittler be our ruler.

you people are defending a bunch of fascists and Nazis,
who are out to destroy the country
.

you were wrong about the civil war, you were wrong about trump,
and your wrong about all this.
you have proven time and again
your judgement is awful - give it up.

listen to what General Lee thought and said.

you should put the country above fascism.

our country lost 400,000 killed to defeat the Nazis
and now you want to turn the country over to them.
what is wrong with you people?

sure - ive always been for Gen Lee.

only thing about General Lee is that
he should have fought a gorilla war
from the start.

but as far as his advocating putting the civil
war in the rear view mirror he was 100%
correct. just look around today - he was
obviously correct.

Oh my God, I am laughing.

you've never heard me say anything derogatory
regarding the General. other than that he should
have fought a gorilla war from the beginning.

fact is I am the one advocating that we honor his
wishes - you are the one contrary to his thoughts.

Or, he should have fought in defensive posture thus dragging a strung out Union Army in a war of attrition. Instead, he went on the offensive(Gettysburg, Antietam) thus drawing the Southern Army into a swift moving army cut off from supply lines. Lee was a brilliant cavalry officer, but his army and supply chain in the South could not fight this type of war. His idea, and in damned nearly worked, was to defeat the Union Army at Gettysburg and then march to Washington and demanding an end to the war. But, it didn't and Monday morning quarterbacking. He should have went into defensive posture and tried to ride out the Yankee attacks on the South until the Northern mothers and fathers were tired of seeing their young men die in the South. He should have dug in and told the Southerner's to defend their homeland.

But, given his resources he was a brilliant General. He just didn't have the infrastructure to sustain a "moving" war.

But the great-great-grandchildren of Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, three of the Confederacy’s top military and political leaders, feel differently.

They are not all on exactly the same page. While two of Jackson’s descendants called unequivocally for the removal of Confederate statues in Richmond, Va., three descendants of Lee and Davis said simply that they would not object to moving such monuments to museums. But none of them sided with those Americans, including the president, who argue that removing the statues from their current locations would be an affront to history and heritage.

the only people who are "stirring the pot" are republicans.

This is why no one takes anything you say serious, in any way, shape, or form.

You have some legit coping issues and need to seek counseling. You're so angry about losing the election and being made a fool. One would think you are Hillary Clinton herself.
