Huff's Response

I also blame Tom for people being critical on the Internets...

He said what he needed to say. He's a smart guy that has been around coaching a long time, a fact for which I have tremendous respect.

If Coach Huff left at the end of the season (which includes the bowl appearance), then I wish him good luck and Godspeed. If he pulls a Rich Rod and bails before the end of the season, I'm sure many people will be very disappointed (and would make other prospective employers of Coach Huff much more wary).

I would understand him leaving for VT, but I would also lose any respect I have for him. I guess I’m just old school, but when someone gives you an opportunity I believe you have an obligation to try and give them a return on that. If he ends up going 10-4, wins the conference and a bowl, that would be a little better, but if he goes 7-5 and ends up gutting the recruiting class by taking the top players to VT with him, then he is severely screwing the school that gave him the chance. If he would do that I doubt he would feel bad about trying to get Ali to transfer either.

I find the contrast interesting:

To MU fans a 7-4 record seems like an underachievement.
To VT, 7-4 is attractive enough to consider taking their coach.

As I warned about the fans' content nature of being a school welcoming of young HC's, looking to use MU and move on, this is what you may get more often.

He’s not going. Napier and Chadwell are on the list before him. He needs to focus on beating Western.
He passed the Charlotte test.

He only responded because people were getting worked up over nothing.

Huff isn't leaving (this year anyways). The sample size isn't there for him yet. He possesses a number of the core things AD's look for in their HC, but he's not to the point of being a legit P5 target.

I'm not knocking the guy. Just being honest.

The piece from the Washington Post was nothing more than opinion. There was no basis to it other than what the author thinks should happen.

It was ridiculous for people to worry about it.

That was his response.

I think the WKU game comes down to whether we can pressure their QB and make them beat us with a running game, and they will try to shut down our rushing game and make Wells beat them. I hope Huff is gone in 1-2 years, that will mean that he accomplished what he was hired to do here.

Rodriquez was in his SEVENTH year. He had gone to FIVE bowl games, including two majors. He had wins over TWENTY EIGHT Division I-A teams that finished the year with a winning record.

Also, WVU had made major commitments to fund various improvement projects, which is simply did not have the money to do and reneged on the deal.

CH has coached 83% of ONE year. He will take the team to A bowl game, probably pre-Christmas. He has beaten ZERO teams that will finish the year with a winning record. IF he beats WKU, that will be his FIRST win over a team with a winning record. SEVEN AND FIVE.

Marshall has made major program upgrades in accords with CH’s ideas and has among the best facilities in the G5.

“Pull a Rich Rod”. WTF does that even mean?

Somebody loves Rich Rod.
Despise him, as I do everyone and everything associated with USPAM in any way.

Just pointing out how totally ridiculous this story is. A first year coach with, at best, an 8-4 record against weak competition and, at best, one win versus a team with a winning record (most of whom also faced the same weak schedule) is not being considered for ANY other job ANYWHERE, let along at a major program like VPI.

While VPI made a totally stupid coaching hire last time, taking a coach who was mediocre in the weak AAC, at least that guy had four seasons of resume.

It ain’t happening. It is all internet ho-ha.

Huff is taking the first train out of town. It won't be VT, but another program will come along in a few years (or sooner) if he is successful. That is the reality of our program, and I am fine with that. We do not have the resources to keep highly successful coaches long term. As long as we make the right hires for the program, we will be successful, even if we have to keep making those hires every 3 years.

If you watch and listen to Coach Huff you get a since of character. That means being honest and keeping your word. I believe he wants to do that. I believe he wants to build here. There is a huge difference in being a Head Coach and being an assistant. As an assistant you have to move frequently to move up. As a Head Coach you have to stay put to prove your ability.

I 100% agree that Huff is high character guy. With that said, character doesn't have a role in why he's not leaving for a P5 job. The lack of interest (due to small sample size) does though.

I'm not saying he's leaving, but I've lost count of how many coaches have made denials about leaving to only end up leaving. Once again I AM NOT saying coach Huff is leaving, but coaching denials mean nothing.
