What anyone sees in this coaching staff. Playing for field goals with this kicker the entire second half and clock management at the end of the first half is beyond absurd.
It's almost as if Doc and staff were trying to prove a point of some sorts.

Legg has to go. Short yardage and we run a sweet instead of Johnson? Letting Birdsong attempt to throw a pass? Ugh. So many dumb decisions.

I'm sure those plays were executed exactly as they were intended and practiced.

I do not disagree with some of the OP concerns (mainly time management at the end of the half). But you also have to be willing to credit the coaching staff for the positive. The team was ready to play, few penalties, great job rotating the backs, and controlling the clock as well as wearing down their D. The two conversions with Birdsong running the ball (but my god why was he trying to pass is beyond me). Etc.

I thought with a few exceptions the game went well. We all just have to understand that Coach is not into embarrassing his opponents. Everything looked great with exception of the play calling on offense. We could use some unpredictable offensive play calling when the game has not been put out of reach. I have seen this a lot over the last couple of years. The D play calling I think worked very well. We need a young forward thinking OC, what we have now works with most of CUSA and middle level other opponents. I understand the first 4 or 5 games with Chase at QB we needed to slow things down, but by the bowl game with 9 starts and what I have seen from him during the season, we should have been able to go wide open today. Chase, over the year, has certainly looked like he would have been able to handle mentally any mistakes he might have made. I would have expected nothing different today if the coaching staff had opened it up. For those who would blast any negative comments, I am glad we won. I am just looking forward to next year. Had the coaching staff opened it up and we won by 20 and scored 30 or more from a top AAC and NCAA ranked Defense, would have been remembered when next year comes around. at least 4 times in good position had we not gone conservative would have come out with 7 instead of 3 or zero. Even with the conservative offense today we siginificantly out played U Conn. The score just did not show that. As we all know the score is the only thing the poll voters will remember in 8 months when they do the preseason polls.

I do not mind Doc not wanting to embarrass opponents, but get to the point where we have the game in hand and then drop back to conservative. We need a new offensive plan, which in my opinion as a fan, is a new direction. This starts with a new OC. Everyone from coaches to players to fans are all sons and daughters of Marshall and I love them all, even the ones no longer here(even those most here hate due to choices made after their time at Marshall). I would wish the offensive coaches well in future endevors should they choose to leave and we go on with something more forward looking(I almost used the word progressive but cringed at the word and it's connection to the present day democratic party - LMAO).

I hope all had a great Christmas, and love that for the 3rd? year in a row our starting QB was able to win a bowl game in front of his home town fans.

Happy New Year all.

Not wanting to embarrass an opponent doesn't come into play when you're never up by more than 10. We were just flat out bad in critical areas. Most of that is due to dumb play calling. We'd get down the field, and boom, overly conservative, bad play calls. Just keep doing what works. A good example... Davis was running the ball extremely well. We get to a critical third down, BOOM, bring Foster back in. Davis has a nice streak going, good momentum... and we switch it up. Third and short, Devon is in the game... room a sweep with Reaves. Birdsong comes in multiple times and runs for first downs on every third and short. We have a critical third down... he throws it. It just makes no sense.

Throwing for Birdsong was only to keep the defense honest. Even if he doesn't complete them, he has to attempt a pass otherwise when he's in there it's obvious what he's going to do.

As for the play calling I think it was on point today. Against WKU I thought it was awful. Today we had a game plan. We were going to win a war of attrition. We were going to play UCONN at their game and beat them at it. They have one of the better defenses we've played, and we were able to take control and make sure we kept control of the game. I thought it was a solid game plan and it proved to be a good one since we won. Yep, it was a boring game, but 3 straight 10 win seasons and 5 straight bowl games is nothing to shake your nose at.

I'm just happy the growing pain season is out of the way for Litton. Next year is going to be very important and more difficult than the team is used to, and now Litton has nearly a full season under his belt.

We didn't need to keep them honest. That's the thing. They already knew what he was going to do. They still couldn't stop it.

Tell me why we will all of a sudden be better in 2016?
Yeah, Litton will have another year under his belt and we hopefully get Van Horn back but we still have issues at RB, WR and Leggs ultra conservative 5 play playbook.

Unless we make HUGE strides on offense next year may be a huge disappointment.

Just not drinking the kool aid.

We have issues on offense and they need corrected.

I fee you pain, Twolf...
I think our biggest & most noticeable gain will be in the OL, after Coach Sinclair takes them through
another cycle of his off-season training.

Bill Legg for ex-OC !!!

I don't think we will have issues at RB. We bring back Foster, Davis and Pittman.(who played ahead of the others before his injury) Weems, who almost had his shirt pulled and from what I've seen, looks capable. Then we have the kid who signed with Louisville(James Allen) and Tyler King coming in who will both bring some speed and big play ability to the position. Could also play Cody Mitchell there, and I think he would excel. I think RB will be a strength actually, losing Johnson for most of season will pay dividends in the future. Definitely need the WRs to step up though. I think McManus, Hunt and Knight could be a nice set of starters but they need to prove it. Litton likes his TEs a lot and he has a couple studs in Yurachek and Byrd. Oline will be better. D will be strong. A little concerned about STs but I see at least another 10 win season on the horizon. Sorry so long.

I remember these same conversations in 2011 and then our offense exploded in 2012 and continued on for 2013 and 2014.

I am no Legg fan but true freshman QB, loses top 2 RBs (Rock and Butler), loses top Olineman, and no deep threat.

Despite all of that our QB put up record numbers for a freshman QB.

Is it great? No, it isn't as bad as some make it out to be.

I don't think we were ever in jeopardy of embarrassing UCONN today with that play calling

Re-watch the game. We should have had 4 touchdowns in the first half alone. Too many times we settled for 3 yards when we could have picked up 10. UCONN was big but slow and unathletic on defense

Let's see every year since Sinclair has gotten here, we have gotten bigger and stronger as a program. And every year since Heater has gotten here, we have gotten better on defense.

Plus the most improvement a QB can make is between his freshman and sophomore year. He goes into the offseason as the clear cut starter getting all first team reps. He now has the entire offseason in being the Man in the locker room and making the team his team like Cato did after his freshman year.

It's not about stats, it's Leggs inability to call the right play and his inability to kill the opponant

I would agree with that point. I do not believe there's any reason to panic about 2016 though or think we won't be better.

Good points made, but at my age, I'm a prove it to me guy. Chuck has a good article in todays HD that is spot on about the O. We have some issues to fix and I hope the coaches make that a point of emphasis leading up to next season. If not, I can easily see 4-5 losses. jmo.
