Okay, I know we are only two weeks in but wow! I think Wells has a huge upside. Maybe his numbers weren't great today but we will not face another team this good all season. I think he played well by the way. The defense should quiet the naysayers. I see us having a shot at a Top 25 finish. I had us at 8-2 going into the season I think I was wrong.... think wells makes the difference

We'll know a lot more about this HERD team after the back to back road games at WKU and LA Tech. WKU now 0-2, but has some talent, including a transfer QB from Maryland who is a threat with his arm and his feet. LA Tech just won a road thriller by 1 point at Southern Miss. We've yet to play them down in Ruston, LA, so there is that factor. Right now Doc and staff have THREE weeks until we go to Bowling Green, KY, on Oct. 10th. So absent a late addition to our schedule for one of the next 2 week ends, DOC and staff certainly have plenty of time to work and prepare for both WKU ad LA Tech!

I haven't been overly impressed with WKU's QB. Heck of an athlete, but I don't think he's that good of a QB.

I still think that there is a good chance UAB will be in town on October 3 in the Rice spot. It would be a real shame to have to have 3 weeks off.
I think the league will make the change this week

Not having a bonehead lead the way at qb makes a huge difference.

I really like this team. Talented. Don’t get too cocky. Just show up and represent the Herd very well.
Bingo. Doc finally has someone with real leadership skills at the QB position. The last two QB's had serious issues that Doc never really addressed.

UAB has a home game against UTSA in that spot, so it won’t be them. If Marshall adds another game for either next week or October 3, it’ll likely be a non-conference game.

I hope so. No way they'll have a top 25 team just sitting at home for 3 weeks.
Then again, the leadership of this conference is suspect at best.
I think the appeal of being ranked, gives potential opponents more of a reason to play.

I think those were our previous Top 25 wins. It's the second time at home and first time at the Joan.
I attended the Miami O game as a senior at Htgn East. Incredible upset, esp. given that the “Young” Thundering Herd was only 6 years removed from The Crash. + a measure of payback for the 66-6 thrashing we suffered in ‘72. It also created an intense rivalry & in the minds of many, many fans old enough to remember, is responsible for putting little Miami at the top of the list of teams we love to beat!!! It culminated (for me at least) with Stan Hill’s epic performance subbing for B Left - 4 passing TD’s and the game winning pass fake/run that won the game as time expired, setting off a crazy rush onto the field & an assault arrest of a Miami asst coach. The Miami coaching staff trashed the room below the press box & ended up reimbursing Marshall $5-6 thousand dollars for repairs. 1976 became the year the rivalry started, because as the Charlotte HBC said recently, “It’s not a rivalry until you beat them.”

I was at that game in 76 as well. I agree it was a huge upset and win. By the way I am a HEHS class of 80. My brother was in your class 76.

I stand corrected.
It was referenced during the App State game. I believe they also mentioned in the regular season and not post-season.
But a win's a win.

No, I believe you were correct the first time. BYU typically isn't counted in our win column against ranked teams, because they were ranked in the Coach's Poll, but not AP at the time we met up with them in the Motor City Bowl.

The key part is "AP Poll." The initial post about it was correct.

Yeah, that's not quite how it happened. There were five seconds left after the TD. How do I know? Because I ran up to Coach Pruett yelling at him to NOT kick the extra point. Why? Because the TD put Marshall up by one point with five seconds left. An extra point would have served no purpose other than to give Miami (not the real one, the one in Ohio) a chance at blocking it and returning it for two points to win the game. Pruett looked at me like I was on drugs and didn't quite understand what I was yelling to him, and at that point, I realized that many FBS head coaches cheated on their math finals.

Rifle - now that I think about it, (dammit!) you are right. Did we kick the extra point? I honestly don’t remember. My original point is correct: The renewal of the MU/little miami series took place approx 20 years from the mid-70’s. The fans still very much alive stoked the embers and set it ablaze. And we proceeded to kick their asses up and down the field almost every time we have played them since.....yeah, too much effort, I get it. But true, at least for me.....

Yep, we inexplicably kicked the meaningless extra point. In the rare chance that it had been blocked and returned to beat us, Pruett’s entire career would have had that major black eye on it . . . other than a minor NCAA transgression or two.
