Was kind of bored this afternoon, so did a quick analysis on the effect of impact players by assigned class was for 2017. (The assessment of impactful or not was mine.)

Class # Players # Impact Players % of Class
FR 45 14 31%
SO 19 12 63%
JR 25 13 52%
SR 12 6 50%
Totals 101 45 45%
Returning 89 39 44%

Regardless of how one feels about this year and the currenct coaching staff, one would expect better results going forward; nothing less than additional improvement should be acceptable.

Fr. #'s are skewed due to the many walk-ons that are never given a second glance. We need to have some intrasquad game competition to better assess these kids.

I am pretty sure the NCAA has banned FBS JV squads
Intrasquad

During Friday walk through so for the first 2 units.
Break the rest of the roster down for some game like competition and see if any talent stands out.

The Friday Walk-Through is usually only the 65-70 players that will travel anyway. Everyone else is usually in the weight room.

My thing is this, if you are a freshman and you cant make the travel squad after fall camp is over, its best you just redshirt and dont cry about it.

Here are the real numbers for this season. Please note that 15 of 16 HS recruits from the 2017 class redshirted with WR Monterio Hunt being the only T-FR to play this year.

By Recruiting Class (Played in 2017): Starters - Player started at least 6 games
Class Players Starters GP GS
2013--------5-------------2---------51------24
2014-------15------------7--------131------76
2015-------12------------6--------110------62
2016-------29-----------10-------248-----106
2017--------6-------------2---------55------21

By Grade Class (Played in 2017): Starters - Player started at least 6 games
Class Players Starters GP GS
TR-FR-----1-------------0----------12------0
FR-RS----18------------5---------161-----53
SO---------17------------7---------136-----77
JR----------18-----------10--------169----103
SR---------13------------5---------117-----56

As the numbers show, we are SO and JR laden team with a promising group of rising SOs and a very good 2017 FR class that almost all redshirted. Talent-wise, the future is bright if we can do a better job of retaining players than we did with the 2014 and 2015 recruiting class.

We still have the offensive system issues, but hopefully Legg will retire or Doc can come to his senses and ask him to retire or fire him .

You hit on the key point - retaining players and keeping them on the team and moving toward their degree.
