from last year and have some experience! Through the years those trips to Bowling Green have always been tough for the Herd, saw Pennington and Moss get clipped up there by a BGSU team that won 4 games that year. Saw Leftwich need a punt return to pull out a win up there against a Falcon bunch that won 4 games that year. Not saying we can't win that tilt but we'd better buckle up...sleep walking will certainly get us beat!

I remember many years those Mid American teams would load up against Marshall to improve their stats. When we were down they would run up the score. For me it would feel good to embarrass that conference.

Miami was famous for running it up against weak MU teams....they were really good back then, in the lower top 20 ranking often and they would wear us out with bad displays of sportsmanship. Can't beat them often enough or bad enough to suit me!

At least we play them early in the season. It won't be brutally cold.
Pennington and Moss got beat on Halloween day...beautiful Fall day in Ohio, we just didn't show up to play! We were going to crack the Top 25 with a win but fell flat....long drive home!

Wrong year. That was 98, year after Moss left. But all else true. I left Doyt Perry Stadium kinda like… what just happened. BG played incredible (I remember quite a few difficult catches they made) and we didn’t.

You'll have to forgive me for the wrong year, when you're as old as I am ,the years tend to run together. I seem to remember that BGSU scored on EVERY 2nd half possession after struggling to score on anybody prior to our game. Moss was gone but we had another great receiver on that team, high draft pick of Denver, can't remember his name.

I believe you are thinking of Darius Watts, but he didn't start playing until 2000.

The 1998 team did have several good WRs - Nate Poole NFL with a team or two, James Williams drafted by the Seahawks, and David Foye who camped in NFL with Miami but didn't make it.

Yes, you're correct ...Darius was Byron's favorite target.

Also got beat up there on Doc's first trip to BGSU; we drove up with a brand new MU umbrella, tailgated with many other MU fans, went in and started being disappointed (surprised really) quickly. Wasn't pretty then either.

Would the consensus agree that BGSU is THE hardest place MU has ever played for a conference mate, or have there been tougher ones?

It has been a Chamber of Horrors for us...until the last 20 years trips to Oxford would result us being on the wrong side of lopsided scores.

I don’t think it was necessarily tougher than BGSU, but MTSU was not friendly to us.
I'd say both places have been the toughest for us, for whatever reason - lack of crowd, poor stadium, overconfidence going in?

UTC used to be oddly difficult too. Chamberlain Field was a Chamber of Horrors. Still remember that front on a Herd Saturday from Thom Marsh.

I was at a couple of the MTSU losses... It was a high school crowd both times, one of them in the pouring rain... It always seemed like MTSU played their game of the year against us and we never matched that intensity in Murfreesboro for whatever reason.

Bad road trip memories at both BGSU and MTSU.

In all my years of watching Marshall football one thing remains consistent. The Herd struggles in empty stadiums with no atmosphere. Sure we get beat at packed stadiums, but we tend to have better showings. Something about the lack of energy in the stands kills the energy on the field.

I've seen Spring Games more intesne than our last trip to Murfreesboro.

This is so very true.

1995 in Pennington's 1st start. 5 INTs, I believe, but we pulled out the win.

I was there. I have that game on dvd. If I am not mistaken I believe he threw 6 ints and we still won the game. I may be wrong. Terrell Owens was playing for UTC in that game as well.

BGSU is just such a depressing place to begin with. Not shocking MU struggles there.
It's cold, windy, dark by 4PM, and nobody even knows a football game exists.
MTSU and MU seemed to trade wins at home against each other, every now and then the road team won.

It was 6 interceptions. Was not there, but did listen to the game on radio.

Yeah, IIRC we got creamed 31-13 in 1998.

And didn't we get our butts kicked when they had Omar Jacobs? Or was it Josh Harris?
