is Billy Ross still with the football team?

What would lead you to believe that he wasn’t still with the team?
I was told that by somebody who would know. Hear it is old school vs new school. maybe they are trying to resolve the issue or not.

In Huff's press conference after the scrimmage Saturday, he talked about all of the linemen that they were trying at different positions, and basically read off the names of every lineman on the roster, except Ross.

Without knowing too much about the situation, it sounds like a kid transferring in with a promise to start, then finding out he has to fight for his spot, and losing it because of a negative reaction to competition.

We run into this a lot with players who transfer down to MU after starting games for a P5 school. Everybody was saying he'd be a fitting replacement for Cain Madden, but unless they're here by force (like Josh Ball coming here because FSU threw him out), you have to wait and see if they even make the two-deep.

He had a personality conflict with the OL Coach and decided to quit football. He was with the 1s at the time so it is not a playing time issue.

A lot of quality O line talent being developed lately in the Cabell-Wayne HS ranks. Unfortunately, MU apparently can't hardly get a "sniff" when trying to acquire some of said talent. And in rare event that we do obtain such a player, he might happen to turn out to be another "head" case! It seems that the Herd just can't win in some areas.

then what exactly is the conflict??
I'm not at liberty to say exactly but basically Ross didn't appreciate how he was being "spoken" to and decided it wasn't worth it since he has a degree already and has no aspirations of turning pro.

what a joke! good to know now and not in the middle of game, when the going gets tough.
there's only 1 reason a coach 'speaks' to a player, and thats because the player isnt doing what he is coached to do.
if you are not here, your are there, and there is not where you are supposed to be, so you better be here. simple.

I think it's unfair to assume anything further, including who is at fault here, if anyone is. We don't know the exact context or details of the incident. I only replied originally because he was being accused of not being a hard worker, which I understand is not the case at all and I didn't think it was fair to rush to label him negatively.
Unfortunately it didn't work out for us as we had hoped. That's all we really know for sure. I think it's unfair to point fingers at either Ross or the coaches with as little as we know.

"After redshirting his first season on campus, he started 11 games and played 587 snaps at right guard in 2018. Ross appeared in nine games at several positions along the line last season, seeing limited action except for a 56-snap outing against Appalachian State." Source: UNC 247Sports

Sounds like he got passed up on UNC's depth chart, transferred down to Marshall, then had a "personality conflict" with his O-Line coach, and now he's completely done playing football.

For anyone playing along at home, that means that since high school Ross has:

2017: Sat out a season
2018: Played as a P5 starter
2019: Played as a P5 backup
2020: Sat out a season
2021: Transferred down, quit football

If this is all happening with him giving maximum effort, then it sounds to me like he just doesn't like playing football. That's not as uncommon as you might think, burnout is a real thing. I hope the kid finds something else to be passionate about.

So this thread was posted as a question but the poster already knew the answer?
As of now he's still list on the herdzone.com roster

It was posted as a question because I didn’t know if it was true. I was hoping it wasn’t I too saw his name still on the roster so I thought I had bad information, that I thought I would verify before I said more
Now the other questions are why is he still on the roster? Is There a chance he’ll come back after a time out?
Is Huff from the Doc school of information sharing?
Is one of the extra 8 support staff Huff has not doing their job??? Plus more

On another Herd site someone posted that Ross suffered an injury and that he is finished playing football as a result. Anyone know anything about this?

He mentioned in the HD story today that his recent concussion was a factor of ending his career. So I guess the poster on the other board was somewhat correct

it looks like the poster on the other board simply quoted the information provided in the Herald dispatch which is more info on the subject than one can find here.

not really, Bayou Boiler pretty much hits it on the head. instead of using the concussion excuse, which isnt what happened, why not man up and say, I've lost my desire to play football, so its in everyone best interest, Marshall, my teammates and me for me to just retire at this point.

So you are saying he was lying about a concussion? Concussions are nothing to mess with.

yes really.....you might want to work on your reading and comprehension. I'm not opining on Ross using excuses or not, or anything else about Ross. simply pointing to the fact that poster referenced the HD quote. Ross is gone, makes no difference to me what the reason is or if we know all the details or if he is lying about the reason.

Both can be true. He could have gotten a concussion and lost his desire to play.

The team was doing a walk thru and one idiot LB came full speed and hit BR causing a severe concussion. It was a fu(king cheap shot that cost us a big time player at right guard.

Ruffin!!!!!

LUCAS goes deep, laying out for a ball Reggie throws just * out of his reach. *
Another freshman helps Lucas Booth up. * ALAN catches the ball downfield, with only Nate left to *
beat... *
Right before they collide, Nate drops his right shoulder * safely back, then brings his left forearm around for a hard * shot at Alan’s neck. *
Alan crumples to the ground. *
FED UP, RED DAWSON STALKS OVER TO NATE. He grabs his * helmet and shoves him so hard that Nate loses his balance * and falls over a bench. *
Red glares down, wild-eyed. *
RED DAWSON * What the hell is the matter with * you, Nate? *
Nate just looks up at him, stunned that Red, of all people, * is acting like this. *
NATE RUFFIN * I was just trying to protect my arm-*
RED DAWSON:
Bullshit! You think you’re the
only one who’s got a right to be
pissed off? You think you’re the
only one who’s had it rough?
* * * * *
All the players stare at Red. He looks around at them. *
RED DAWSON (cont’d) * All of you! You’re acting like * goddamn children!
