With the exception of ‘20 (Covid), no major party candidate has missed the Al Smith charity dinner in the last forty years. Except democrat presidential appointee Kamala, this year. Candidates generally trade lighthearted barbs at the event, which is what’s shown above from 2016.

The Archbishop hosting the event was polite at Harris’ snub on his podcast this week but was disappointed in her decision to just send a video instead.

"It's a shame because the nature of the evening is to bring people together. The nature of the evening is civility, patriotism, humor. It's not a campaign speech. It's not a campaign stop."

Kamala really should be attending this event but things aren't looking great in Wisconsin. Trump has drawn boos at this event before by stepping over the line. If he plays nicer this time, he's likely to get a far better reception & with no Kamala present to react, could turn out to be a good event for him fundraising wise. We'll see how he does.

CNN's pearl-clutching is fantastic. To be fair, even though Kamala didn't attend (the last major candidate to skip was Mondale) she did send a video which I've included below just in case anyone forgot Molly Shannon was still alive. The response in the room at the video was bad enough even lefty MC Jim Gaffigan made fun of it.
