Leftwich news

He has earned it and deserves better. JAX is a dead end job - he should know that from when he played for them. I think he'll be a great HC for a club that won't interfere in his day to day business.
JAX might be a good chance with Trevor Lawrence in the mix & think Leftwich would be a great mentor for him.

That aspect is true and good point. I just don’t think the JAX organization is very good. They didn’t treat him well as a player. Jmho

Go ahead and do a practice interview with the Jags, however, hold out for the Carolina Panthers HC job which should open up after next season!

It worked out well for one guy out of how many? That list includes numerous HOF college coaches and a guy who many regarded as the greatest College HC ever.
Jimmy Johnson comes to mind as a successful coach in both and you could maybe argue for Barry Switzer but yes that list is very short

Jim Harbaugh did pretty well too. I know he hasn't done all that well at Michigan (although they just made the playoff), but he was 29-6 at San Diego, lifted Stanford back into relevance, and took the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

I think a lot of what dooms college HCs that make the jump is that it's usually a horrendous franchise that is so desperate that they're willing to take the gamble on a college coach.

I really do believe that had Nick Saban stayed in Miami he would have turned them into a good team again. He's just too good of a coach.

Byron is too smart to take on the dumpster fire that is Jacksonville. Who in their right mind would go to work for an organization that thought hiring Urban Meyer was a good idea? And then kept the GM that hired him? And hasn't put many good pieces in place for any coach?

As for making the jump from college to the NFL, it does happen successfully but almost always when the coach has a good bit of experience in both arenas. The reality is that the NFL is extremely different from college. The players actually have the ability to push back through their union. These are also grown men, many with families, who will not react to the rah rah bullshit coaches use with college players. Some of them are making more money than the coach and the most experienced have been there a decade or longer. I spent a long time in the military and it's the difference between being in command of a basic training company and being in command of a company full of experienced soldiers.

If he goes to a team that fired the old coach, the team is going to be in a shambles. He's going to have a reclamation project on his hands wherever he ends up.

The Jaguars job is probably more attractive than the Bears job in all honesty.

In Jacksonville you have Trevor Lawrence (who showed flashes but needs help)... You get Travis Etienne back after missing his rookie year... You have the number one pick in the draft and a good number of picks throughout... You don't have to worry about weather... That division is very favorable. The Titans are good now, but all their top players are in the prime (Derrick Henry can't run forever). The Colts are inconsistent and may be looking at a reboot if they move on from Wentz. The Texans suck and are also looking for a total restart with a new coach.

And, it's Florida. The hell with a bunch of frozen Illinois.

Not a Colts fan, but man Taylor is tough. They’d be great offensively with a marginal QB.

Much of the reason college coaches sucked in the NFL is because they came from programs where they literally got the best athlete for each position, or at least close to the top.
They already had an advantage from that part alone...then they had to coach them, which brought in the best coordinators money could buy.
College, the HC and the program are selling points (and now the legal but formerly illegal) habit of paying players has come to light.
NCAA titles mean nothing by comparison.
Saban was (and probably would still be) bad in the NFL because all of the players are the best of college, and some are veterans already in the NFL. That's something a college coach couldn't and doesn't know how to handle.
The NCAA continues to be a dream world for college coaches who really don't have rules applied to them...in the NFL, you have extremely weathly owners all over, who'll make sure your ass never coaches again if you do something wrong.
Plus, there are limitations and a ton more legal hurdles to get the best players from teams, unlike college just just turns a blind eye to the SEC violating some rule and punishes Kent State for no reason.
