I think the biggest question I have is how will the almost now former presidents wife function without the vacations and having the backup AF1 at her disposal when she couldnt wait an hour or so for him..flying on two separate planes , millions and millions of tax payer $$$ spent on one vacation after another. These two have seriously thought the last 8 years was one big party and spent $$ like it was- Less than 17 hours to go and at last as President Ford said " our long national nightmare is finally over"
I am going to laugh at this when Trump is flying back and forth from NYC and Palm Beach weekly. Unless he really is dumb enough to not use AF1, at which point I really do hope a raghead shoots down his plane just for his own stupidity. AF1 might be expensive, but it is worth every single cent when it comes to security. Hell, we should build a bomb-bay in the next ones, just to really make a point. Maybe even giant frickin' lasers.
I believe I remember reading somewhere that he is actually required to fly AF1 anywhere he goes....due to the defense and communication capabilities. It is literally a flying White house should it be necessary.
Also, the 2nd B-747 (there are 2) always travels as a backup on long distance travel outside of Washington. Again, necessary in case of mechanical or other flight operation issues.
2 B-757s too. Used primarily for the VP as his plane, but also used by first lady trips and by the president when then locations he is flying into cant handle the size of the 747.
The rest of their lives will continue to be one as they bilk flocks of adoring fans.
I assume he could say no to AF1. I mean, he IS the Commander in Chief, after all. There's been a lot of intenet bullshit Trump would fly his own plane, but as I said he would be a dumbass to do so, I doubt his plane has flares, EMP protection, and full electronic counter-measures lol.
I am quite familiar with the particulars of what is flown and why. Clinton flew into Turkey to Cegniz Topel on a Gulfstream III, with F-16's escorting him. He then flew into Pakistan on the same Gulfstream while AF1 flew in as well, as a diversion. Obama has also flown on a Gulfstream, but in domestic air space.
I've seen both the C-32 and VC-25 AF1's fly in...and it's obvious to say that 747 is MUCH more impressive. It is a statement as much as everything else.
On a side note, the new Presidential limo is not yet ready, but there are "spy" photos of it being tested.
Like Raoul said, AF1 is a flying anti - EMP and a distraction. AF1 and AF2 do touch and goes on the HTS tarmac all the time. AF1/2 are the aerial version of the Greenbier. The AF has a whole black fleet for POTUS, makes AF1 look like the original Challenger.
Considering they announced yesterday that the transition team is returning 20% of its budget allotted to them by the federal govt, back to the govt, I would take that as a sign we may have some fiscal responsibility coming our way.
SAM 28000 and 29000 do touch and goes up here at MDT (Harrisburg) as well, it is neat seeing them maneuver around at such low altitude.
